Doer of audio & video things at Interfacing Linux.

Venn1··on Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM
The Linux desktop client was using a bit more memory than I expected. 1326 MB from a cold start, and I'm only in 11 servers.
Venn1··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
I was running my TrackMania 2 community server on one, but decided to self-host it on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 after discovering that an Ethernet adapter existed for it.
Venn1··on ETH-68: Ethernet Audio Interface for Linux
As the owner of the PCIe card that measurement was taken from, yes, I’d say it’s quite impressive. The average round-trip latency for a USB audio interface at 48 kHz/128 samples would usually fall somewhere around 8 ms, which is a bit much if you’re monitoring post-FX.

On Linux, we don’t have much in the way of Thunderbolt support for audio interfaces, so the only way to achieve this sort of latency has traditionally been with PCIe or PCI audio interfaces. Having a low-cost, infinitely more portable solution would be very welcome.

Venn1··on I said no and Apple said yes
If you can't disable it, it's not a feature.
Venn1··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Not officially, but it's publicly available for download.

Venn1··on DaVinci Resolve 21.1
On Linux, yes.
Venn1··on DaVinci Resolve 21.1
I've edited well over a thousand hours of video on my (Debian) DaVinci Resolve workstation. It's a rock-solid video editor that I can spend a day in without having to worry about a crash.

But I desperately wish Blackmagic would bring support for VST3 plugins and JACK to Linux. Or, at the very least, allow me to use my MIDI control surface in Fairlight on Linux.

As it stands, I have to do all of my audio production in Reaper, and that's a bit cumbersome.

Venn1··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
I've already encountered two instances of something I was interested in learning about being linked using Nitter / XCancel, and those links are now quite deceased.

Please link to primary sources. If I need an alternative method of accessing the site, I'll figure it out.

Venn1··on US gov sides with OpenAI on issue of training LLMs on copyrighted material
I won't be the first on HN to mention how having a niche tech blog is becoming unmaintainable, and this reads like a greenlight to scrape away. The Creepy Crawlies post[1] from a few days back was basically a checklist of nonsense I have to deal with, albeit on a smaller scale. Even so, it's getting outside my budget.

I'd much prefer a world where everything is not locked behind a login with bonus 2FA, but that sure seems like where we're headed.

Venn1··on What If America Went Dark?
I’d like to be optimistic and say we’d have about a week before things started getting Mad Max-y out here in the suburbs.
Venn1··on 99% of My Website Traffic Is Bots
I'm blocking the Amazon search crawler, anything coming from Googleusercontent, and limiting AI crawlers to search rather than allowing AI assistants. The residential proxy waves are something to behold, but Cloudflare does an okay job catching those in the AI labyrinth. Still, it's all a bit silly, and I can't imagine what large sites deal with when I'm tangoing with this much nonsense on a small tech blog.
Venn1··on The death and rebirth of my home server
My Raspberry Pi 4 has been used to run both a Jitsi and Trackmania server over the years. I never considered using the SD card since it can boot and run from a USB 3 flash drive. Later on, I picked up an Argon One case to add a SATA SSD.

Thankfully, modern Rockchip SBCs tend to come with NVMe slots.

Venn1··on Official Jagex Launcher for Linux
Played around with it a bit this morning. It ships as an AppImage and the launcher opened a browser that allowed me to create an account and bounced me back to the launcher to log into RuneScape.
Venn1··on Gone but Not Forgotten: Recovering the Dead Web
Anyone in their late 30s or early 40s should be grateful. We got to be stupid teenagers on the internet without any of it going on our permanent record.
Venn1··on Bring back crappy forums
A couple of years back I was trying to search a project's Discord for help after they noped their forums. It was a bad enough experience that I set up a forum on my website that evening. I use it as a public version of Google Docs for issues I run across.

I see a 1-2K requests from the Perplexity and ChatGPT-User user agents in the logs every day, so maybe it's helping out a couple of people.

What's been amusing is the number of times I've been contacted on social media, Discord, email, YouTube, and even Steam asking for help / clarification on a post I made in the forums.

Venn1··on Steam Machine
I hope that's the case. Seeing Steam Controller reservations pushed into 2027 tempers my optimism.
Venn1··on Steam Machine launches today
I was expecting $1200 for the base model, so $1,049 without a controller is nice to see.

Having to enter a lottery to buy one makes it feel like Valve doesn’t have new stock in the pipeline for the foreseeable future.

Venn1··on Stanford grads walk out on Google CEO Sundar Pichai speech
Tech leaders from this era will not be remembered well.
Venn1··on Yserver: A modern X11 server written in Rust
And XFree86 before that.
Venn1··on Yserver: A modern X11 server written in Rust
I compiled it on Debian 13 and it works with XFCE4. Granted, things are a bit squirrely until you disable the compositor. No luck getting it to play nicely with LightDM so I ended up launching it from a TTY. This was on an AMD mini PC I had lying around the studio.
Venn1··on Some concerns about Ladybird's (Browser) bylaws
“You hear nonprofit and think distributed governance.”

Not any more (or less) than I think a BDFL.

Venn1··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
I've resorted to lowering the quality of my recordings because of this. People are fantastically bad at discerning AI from properly produced audio. So now I leave in a couple of breaths and a little environmental noise to tap the brakes on the "AI slop" comments. Thing is, it would be trivial to add those to an AI narration.
Venn1··on New Rocket League is using Unreal Engine 6
I'm still a bit perturbed that shortly after acquiring Psyonix, Epic killed off the native Linux client and pulled Rocket League from Steam. We had a great little community that got together on Saturday nights to play it.
Venn1··on Serving a Website on a Raspberry Pi Zero Running in RAM
They are powerful little devices. I used a Pi Zero 2 with an ethernet adapter to host an x86 TrackMania² server using BOX64 and it never had a problem. Only swapped it out recently because I needed the Zero 2 for another project.
Venn1··on Significant progress made on Xbox 360 recompilation
These projects are really neat. Last week, I was able to build (and play) the Xbox 360 release of Sonic Unleashed on a couple of ARM SBCs using Sonic Unleashed Recomp.
Venn1··on DRAM pricing is killing the hobbyist SBC market
Is there anything (technically) preventing SBC manufacturers adding SODIMM slots?

I was expecting the Milk V Titan to avoid this memory nonsense since it has two unpopulated DDR4 slots, but it has fallen off the radar like several other SBCs.

Venn1··on EmDash – a spiritual successor to WordPress that solves plugin security
If I could smash a button and get a 1:1 copy of my existing site, I’d do it in a heartbeat. I don’t see that happening just yet due to the integrated forum software and its own plugins.

With Cloudflare behind it, hopefully plugin vendors will start paying attention.

Venn1··on PC Gamer recommends RSS readers in a 37mb article that just keeps downloading
It's 3.60 MB with NoScript enabled.
Venn1··on Building an FPGA 3dfx Voodoo with Modern RTL Tools
I exhausted my teenage savings to buy the Voodoo 1 due to the Linux support. Granted, I was running Red Hat at the time so the installation consisted of installing what, two RPMs? Played a lot of Q3 and Unreal on that card.
Venn1··on Kagi Small Web
Ah, this might explain the traffic from Kagi a week or so ago. I've been scratching my head over that one. I just checked, and my wee little blog is listed in smallweb.txt. Neat!

Curious what goes on behind the Next Post and Show Similar buttons.
