VortexDream··on Evergrande has defaulted on its debt, Fitch Ratings says
You realize that they've already repeatedly said they'd "bail out" people and groups affected by this? They just weren't willing to reward Evergrande's reckless behavior by giving them more money. Something the US should've done (so much for free market capitalism as a principle).
VortexDream··on Italy fines Amazon record $1.3B for abuse of market dominance
Confused. Shouldn't we be fining companies that break the law? We should be expanding it, instead of complaining when another country happens to fine a company that happens to be from the same country as us.

As German, fine the fuck out of the corrupt people in Deutsche.

VortexDream··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
I'm terrified by the fact that there are so many antivaxxers in Germany that they're showing up here too, as supposedly educated and intelligent peers. It is absolutely the fault of unvaccinated that they're unvaccinated and putting society at risk. It doesn't matter how many ICU beds and staff you have, an unvaccinated population would quickly overwhelm it simply by virtue of how incredibly long it takes to recover and how quickly new strains would develop.
VortexDream··on Pixel sent to Google for replacement. They used it to post wife's nudes online
I'm sick of people, so I'm not going to read the inevitable comments that are going to come. Look, face it, some people like taking nude photos of themselves and they like sharing them with their partners. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. It's not their fault if something like this happens. People should be able to feel secure in the tech that they use, in the companies that they entrust their information with. It's a fuckload of bullshit victim blaming and I see it every time the topic comes up. I'm sick of it.
VortexDream··on German Court Rules Against Internet Security Non-Profit Quad9
I am so incredibly tired of Germany being a legal and technical internet backwater. It's exhausting and depressing and I hate it so much. I wish the old people would fuck the hell off, because they simply don't belong in positions that represent our society in a modern world.
VortexDream··on Winamp source code leak
Seems to me like the fact it doesn't scale is why you do it. It's a decent way to avoid the responsibilities of having to lead an open source project while still giving others the benefits of having the source code available and modifiable. I wish more devs would do this.
VortexDream··on Winamp source code leak
Releasing a project as open source is associated with a lot of work and responsibility. People get quite entitled over open source projects and get quite upset when developers don't do what they want. I can see why he's unwilling to undergo all that stress and pressure if he feels it doesn't benefit him.
VortexDream··on Winamp source code leak
Yeah, but does it really whip the llama's ass?
VortexDream··on UK regulator set to block Meta's Giphy deal
For the love of god, having a monopoly is not required to be guilty of anti-competitive behavior. Every time the topic comes up somebody says "but FB/whoever doesn't own the entire market so everything is fine", as if it absolves FB from acting like complete and utter pieces of shit socially and in business. News flash, it doesn't fucking matter. They don't need a de facto monopoly to have an adverse effect on competition or their consumers/users.
VortexDream··on Why are German numbers backwards?
Every freaking time a German dictates a number they do it in a sane way for half the number then do the backwards way for the rest which totally trips me up. I hate it.
VortexDream··on Show HN: I made a movie recommendation app based on your mood
I like the idea of the site but it doesn't match what I want when I'm in a particular mood. If I'm sleepy, I'm more likely to want to watch something chill. If I'm sad, I'm more likely to want to watch something sad. But there are also situations where I want the opposite, so it's not like there's a hard rule. I feel like the site would be better asking what mood they want to be in, instead of trying to guess it based on their current mood.
VortexDream··on I got nerd sniped into benchmarking legacy x86 instructions (2019)
Hadn't heard it either until I saw it twice here on HN this week. Interesting how that goes.
VortexDream··on I moderate /r/kafka; people mistake it as a subreddit about kafka the product
Right, sorry. It's basically a subreddit where people post cat pictures.
VortexDream··on I moderate /r/kafka; people mistake it as a subreddit about kafka the product
There was a comment by the person who's doing it on purpose and taking over abandoned NSFW subs. https://www.reddit.com/r/redditrequest/comments/6ruv62/_/dl8...
VortexDream··on Explanations for the Havana Syndrome
> There's no obvious reason to keep such information secret

... Is this the right assumption to make based on what we know about how US intelligence and the US government works (historically)? There are any number of reasons why these people would have an interest in keeping it secret. It might not seem rational to you because you have completely different priorities and values, but that doesn't mean other people won't think it's rational to keep it secret.

VortexDream··on I moderate /r/kafka; people mistake it as a subreddit about kafka the product
My favorite variation is the ones like https://reddit.com/r/tightpussy (sfw). There are a lot of them.
VortexDream··on Intel Core i7-12700K Review
Wow, this seems like an impressive step forward for the CPU industry and the kind of change we've been hoping for since Ryzen started giving Intel a run for its money. I can only hope that AMD continues to stay competitive and keep Intel on its toes.
VortexDream··on Dopamine Fasting: A Maladaptive Fad (2020)
No, you're right. The whole article misses the forest for the trees. The term "dopamine fast" doesn't literally mean fasting from dopamine. It's about fasting from easy "dopamine hits" from media designed to exploit the way our rewards circuitry works.
VortexDream··on Air cargo is suddenly affordable relative to ocean shipping
Oh. I noticed that none of the supermarkets around me have had any bags for weeks. I somehow didn't connect the dots that there was a bag shortage. Odd. Why would there be a bag shortage?
VortexDream··on Corded headphones are making an unexpected return
Uh...you get what you pay for. I have Sennheisers that are still good 7 years later. I have Audio Technicas that have also lasted just as long. They just didn't cost $10, more like 100-500. But even my "low-end" headphones (which I use far often) are fine years later.

It's a bit disingenuous to compare $10 cans with $240 Airpods. What is this? Reddit?

VortexDream··on Corded headphones are making an unexpected return
Honestly, I'd be surprised to find out that most people used wireless 100% of the time. I have a few good wired headphones that I didn't throw out just because I got myself BT earbuds. What do people use with their PCs?
VortexDream··on Porting Pinnacle Station forward 11 years
It's weird to see so much praise for ME2 everywhere. I hated the game after ME1. There's basically no main plot. 90% of it is side quests to flesh out side characters. Which, fine, I see why people enjoyed so much, but it felt so pointless to me because the main plot boils down to "throw all these people at a final base and see who makes it out alive". I wanted to see the ME story moved forward, but it took until ME3 before that actually happened.
VortexDream··on Apple Silicon Macs can't boot from external drive if internal drive failed
Both. SSDs also fail (yes, it's true). I'm not sure why people seem to think they last forever or that they never fail. They do not last forever. They do fail.
VortexDream··on Apple Silicon Macs can't boot from external drive if internal drive failed
Not sure how this is relevant in any way. I've seen dozens of MacBooks where the hard drive had failed. Not to say that they fail any more than other laptops, but unless Apple has come up with some magical technology that makes their hard drives never fail, this is a terrible, terrible change. Water is wet, the moon circles the earth and hard drives fail (eventually, some sooner than others).
VortexDream··on Truths about video game stories
I used to be deeply immersed in Warcraft lore. WoW helped me kick that habit, ironically. I think though if the game had good stories told well, more people would be interested in paying attention. And people are interested in WoW's story. Or else there wouldn't be as much squabbling about the latest way in which Blizzard butchered the story.

FFXIV shows how much many players want to care.

Some of my favorite story-based experiences in gaming were in an MMO (The Secret World).

VortexDream··on All Applications for Nuclear Energy at COP26 Rejected
Either we use it and learn to use it or we wipe out wide swathes of the human population over the next hundred years. I'm sure the millions who die and suffer over the next few decades will be grateful to your absolute principles.
VortexDream··on Architect Resigns in Protest over UCSB Mega-Dorm
$1.5b for an apartment building seems insanely high to me. Is that what they usually cost?
VortexDream··on $1.5B lithium deposit discovered in Maine; excavating it poses a legal challenge
It's fairly common. Known reserves amount to around 80 million tons. Yearly production is around 100k tons.

I think I saw a projection for a yearly consumption of around 1.7m tons in 2030.

I'd say the biggest issue is simply going to be environmental impact. This is a big reserve that can't be mined because of environmental regulation. That's a lot of money to just pass on, and I don't think that's going to hold.

VortexDream··on Private keys used to sign EU Digital Covid Certificate might have been leaked
I've had my QR code scanned going to bars and restaurants in Germany. Works fine.
VortexDream··on “Dune” (The Movie), Annotated
> OK: But what does this have to do with the glowglobes? The thing about writing a sci-fi book where your big shtick is that There Are No Computers is that you can no longer use “Very Advanced Computers” as your hand-waving explanation for how anything works. So Herbert, one of the great sci-fi writers, came up with a new hand-waving explanation: “The Holtzman Field Generator.” The explanation for any cool non-human tech in the Dune universe is: Holtzman Fields. How do spaceships fly? Holtzman Fields! How do shields work? Holtzman Fields! How do glowglobes float? Say it with me now: “the secondary (low-drain) phase of a Holtman Field Generator.”

This is hilarious. I think I'm going to enjoy reading the whole thing.
