If you make money shorting a stock, who do you make money from?
W-Stool··on Amazon paid music subscription will soon include ads and lose downloads
SomaFM is streaming music on 46 channels and it is all free (but give Rusty some money if you can).

Just saying.

W-Stool··on 19 States approved permanent daylight saving time
Furlongs per fortnight.

This was a real unit of time on VAX/VMS systems.

W-Stool··on I spent two days gigging at RentAHuman and didn't make a single cent
One of my favorite movies, and more relevant than ever today.
W-Stool··on The Cray-1 Computer System (1977) [pdf]
If these kinds of machines interest you I highly recommend the book "The Supermen" by Charles Murray. It has all the details you would ever want on Seymour Cray and others in the business.

I was working at a geophysical company in the 80's and we lusted after a Cray-1. Best we could afford where array processors (CSPI) connected to VAX systems.

Thank you General Turgidson.
W-Stool··on Anthony Bourdain's Lost Li.st's
Was there ever a cooler guy who could actually write? I don't think so.

Anyone who rates "Dr. Strangelove" as a great movie is OK by me.

W-Stool··on [dead]
Frankly I am glad to be an older American. I'd hate to be young and comtemplating America's future right now.
W-Stool··on No one wants or needs downtown San Francisco's new $20M coworking trap
I was going to say that the whole thing is more than a whiff of WeWork, but the article's author beat me to it.

W-Stool··on How honeycrisp apples went from marvel to mediocre
Now do chicken. Here in the USA chickens are getting bigger (I saw a 6.5 pound chicken in the store the other day) and blander. The tissue to me seems very spongy. What is going on with chickens?
W-Stool··on Ask HN: What is the best way to learn Go?
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
W-Stool··on Richard Feynman and the Connection Machine (1989)
Many, many years ago I saw a Connection Machine running. Let me just say it was not a machine that you just walked by. "What the hell is that thing?!?" was more like it.
W-Stool··on Outsourcing Cost Boeing Billions (2019)
I don't know who this is so please name names.
W-Stool··on Convex Architecture Handbook 1984 [pdf]
Was working in Seismic Data Processing at the time and, a Cray being way too expensive, the Convex machine looked like the next Big Thing in our business, which was dominated by VAX 11/780 machines running attached array processors. We had some test code that I believe we ran on the third or sixth machine they built. Met Steve Wallach, I still have a signed copy of "The Soul of a New Machine" from him. Made a few trips to Convex, first in their rented space in a strip mall, then later to their bespoke factory. They really were something at the time.
W-Stool··on A railroad simulation using discrete event simulation
No one interested in railroad simulations running Run8 here?
W-Stool··on Donald Sutherland has died
Donald Sutherland as "Hawkeye Pierce" in M.A.S.H. made such an impression on when I saw this movie on its release as a very young teenager. I've pretty much never got along with authority since.

RIP Donald Sutherland.

W-Stool··on SpaceX liens show over $2.5M debt to contractors in Texas
You are frankly out of your mind if you think Elon Musk and any of his companies are going to take you where you want to go.
W-Stool··on The details behind an F1 team's painful revolution
Hard to believe that at one time Williams was one of the dominant teams in F1. The first F1 car I ever saw at full-song was Alan Jones in the Williams FW07 @ Montreal. I simply could not believe what I was seeing (and hearing).
