WD-42··on Intel plunges 25%, triggers global chip rout on bleak outlook
The stock market isn’t based on reason anymore, it’s vibes. That’s why you see huge swings and nobody bats an eye. It’s just a game.

My daily driver is a 10 year old laptop. Any computer built since Moores law plateaued is plenty capable.

Dude. The internet has been poisoned for a very long time. Remember Viagra? It used to be easy to call out the BS. But if you are outsourcing your thinking to a LLM, it’s much harder.
WD-42··on Publish fake stats, get cited in LLMs
What? How would that be a crime? Most marketing websites already contain fake reviews of their products.

It’s hard to find and convict people who post actual illegal content online, much less fake reviews

It’s not the default. JFC people will use any excuse to keep using chrome it’s insane.

I took the screenshot with the nova theme enabled. That’s what it looks like. It’s a nothingburger.

Good thing you don’t have to use them.

I don’t understand people complaining about Firefox UI. It barely exists. There’s a url bar with some buttons in each side. If you use vertical tabs, another bar with tiny icons for each tab.

There’s so little chrome I can’t find any fault in it. It’s just grey, out of the way, as it should be.

Edit: https://imgur.com/a/1I4gG22 tell me where the bad/ugly UI is.

WD-42··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
You just listed off 3 different services, probably involves even more than that.

Bro has a single server and ssh.

WD-42··on Penguin Mail – open-source Rust email client for Linux with AI
You realize QT predates gtk right? Gtk was a reaction to qt having weird license issues, which it still does, doesn’t make it any less old though. Good luck writing anything in Rust in QT. That’s why people are either choosing gtk or a native toolkit.

WD-42··on Penguin Mail – open-source Rust email client for Linux with AI
Why? Most new gtk apps are written in rust now.
WD-42··on Penguin Mail – open-source Rust email client for Linux with AI
There’s been a flurry of vibe coded mail apps for Linux in the last couple of months. Hylki is another one. They all look basically the same too.

They will probably all be abandoned within the year.

WD-42··on The era of software quality, or the era of ostriches?
I feel like you are being intentionally dense. Show me some examples of customized KDE builds, at the source level. You don’t even have to look to find 100s probably 1000s of gnome extensions. They are not the same.
WD-42··on The era of software quality, or the era of ostriches?
Not really. That would require re-compiling, ensuring binary compatibility with the rest of the system, etc. GNOME extensions are just scripts injected into the main process.
WD-42··on ChatGPT is adding real cartoonists' signatures to fake New Yorker cartoons
Engineering manager at my company put a comic at the end of our sprint demo that was signed bloper. Except it wasn’t funny at all, and kind of weird. I asked him, sure enough it was ChatGPT and he didn’t notice the signature.
WD-42··on The era of software quality, or the era of ostriches?
Yes, you can do some light scripting or create your own plugins for specific apps (krunner). This is not near what you get with gnome extensions, which allow you to essentially execute arbitrary code in the shell’s main process.

The shell got a lot of hate for being written in gjs, but you won’t get that kind of functionality from a shell written in a compiled language.

WD-42··on The era of software quality, or the era of ostriches?
KDE cannot be modified by extensions in the same way GNOME can. This is a fact. The problem is the extension needed to be written. They are trivial to vibe now. You can make them do whatever you want.
WD-42··on The era of software quality, or the era of ostriches?
You can do this by vibe coding extensions, and it appears many people are doing this. Ironically this probably makes GNOME the easiest DE to customize at this point.
WD-42··on An Update on Orion for Linux and Windows
It’ll be interesting to see the Linux source. It felt pretty close to GNOME Web. Maybe the gnome folks can back port some stuff.

WD-42··on Commit description as a thinking tool
I read the linked article, thought the idea was generalizable, and posted that thought. Something wrong with that?
WD-42··on Commit description as a thinking tool
Writing is thinking in every situation, not just limited to commit messages. This is a fact that I'm concerned people are forgetting, or worse never understood to begin with.
