WMCRUN··on New super-enzyme eats plastic bottles six times faster
Sounds cool, but what is the waste product when the enzyme breaks down the plastic? Matter isn’t destroyed...only converted.
WMCRUN··on Bankrupt Chuck E. Cheese parent company wants to shred 7B tickets
I can think of at least 50 ways to use them that cost less than 2.8 million, one of which is art.
WMCRUN··on Ask HN: Any well funded tech companies tackling big, meaningful problems?
Sahara Forest Project https://www.saharaforestproject.com/

Desalination + desert greening + solar + farming. Awesome

WMCRUN··on Ask HN: Why is Reddit on mobile so obsessed with making me use their app?
While we’re at it, have you met Yelp?
WMCRUN··on Not everyone needs 8 hours of sleep: new research
> ‘The researchers expected that regardless of the time of day, men in both groups would see improvements in blood-sugar levels. But “when they exercised in the morning, they actually had slightly higher levels of blood sugar [than baseline], which we didn’t expect at all,” ‘

There’s a circadian effect to blood glucose...it’s part of how you wake up. Kind of surprised the authors of a circadian rhythm study didn’t factor this in.

WMCRUN··on Dance is superior to repetitive physical exercise for brain plasticity (2018)
The novelty is the important part IMHO
WMCRUN··on Dance is superior to repetitive physical exercise for brain plasticity (2018)
Novel behavior could increase plasticity. Whether that’s novel exercise, new dances, or brushing your teeth with the opposite hand.
WMCRUN··on Ask HN: Best general-audience science books
Lifespan, David Sinclair
WMCRUN··on The Man Who Sacked Rome
Best HN comment I’ve read in a long time.

Agreed, would love to find or create the internet’s canteen of unusual shipping lore.
WMCRUN··on Ask HN: What are your favorite technology podcasts?
Venture Stories and A16Z are great. Not a huge fan of the sound effects on Masters of Scale

Or maybe hospitals aren’t using a consumer smart thermometer and more people are now hospitalized.

Any possibility of an East Coast meetup in the near future?
WMCRUN··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
So good. The Wrath of the Khans episodes are some of my favorites.
WMCRUN··on Who’s Behind Those Mystery Drone Swarms? An Investigation
Why can’t someone rig up a DJI drone with an adhesive base, land it on the mystery drone, leave the camera engaged, and figure out where they go?
WMCRUN··on Show HN: Parrot.vc – I forced a bot to read 65,000 VC tweets and it became a VC
Two favorites:

“Billionaires" has nothing to do with those who can’t graduate to higher wage jobs from that starting point.

50% of millennials want to be heard and appreciated.

WMCRUN··on Tendon stem cells enhance regeneration
Possibly placebo, but I felt like bone broth helped during my Achilles tendon recovery.
WMCRUN··on Novelty and Heresy
Oh I see now. The mobile version loaded differently this time. There’s a shopping cart in the upper righthand corner for some reason. The desktop version is the same.
WMCRUN··on Novelty and Heresy
When did PG redesign the site?
WMCRUN··on Show HN: Turn any device with a browser into a security camera
I feel like this has the potential to be misused unless it is clear when the device is in camera mode. I haven’t installed this so I’m admittedly unqualified to comment on whether that’s true, but please don’t give people a DIY NSA capability
WMCRUN··on Economics Needs a Post-Crash Revolution
I would argue the real question is sustainability. The universe is finite.
WMCRUN··on Economics Needs a Post-Crash Revolution
While I hope we can design alternative systems and sustainable, circular economies, the desire for growth may be a hardwired part of the human condition.

Despite all good intentions, the hedonic treadmill is real.

You may like the work of Kate Raworth at Oxford though.

WMCRUN··on 94k Bitcoin (1B USD) transferred from unknown wallet to unknown wallet
Does the time it would take to spin up enough compute to carry out a 51% attack decrease its likelihood? I.e more blocks are being written every day, so you need to do additional work to create the alternate chain?
WMCRUN··on WeWork Parent Weighs Slashing Its Valuation in Half
Wow, now WeWork looks even more overvalued than it did when I wrote this list [1] of things it’s “worth more than”.

My favorite: At $47 billion, We would be more valuable than all the cash raised by every IPO in 2018.
