WaitWaitWha··on Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure
so who is going to be picked up by Amazon to replace their AI?

Amazon is not going to pay for AI internally, and sooner or later they will have to add something internal.

WaitWaitWha··on Serbia's Vucic concedes election defeat in historic win for student movement

WaitWaitWha··on What shall I teach my son?
Some interesting points, but I am a bit discombobulated because the author keeps changing between education, schooling, and parenting pretending they are the same.

Is he asking how to parent a child or what fields to nudge them towards, or what?

I am lost in him taking formal education not delivering any more and making it into an existential crisis of parenting.

Is parenting "education"? sure to some extend like do not stick your hand in fire and some such. But that is a far cry even from basic calculus.

Maybe just stick to the basics on what to teach your son, and of the four things written, only the first and last really needed - become a good person; learn basic facts. The other two will fall in place.

WaitWaitWha··on Anthropic Bans Cruelty to Claude, Still Won't Say What It Protects
I believe this has nothing to do with hurting "Claude's feeling", and way more with Claude not becoming hurtful, because the interactions are used to train the models.
WaitWaitWha··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
Beyond the weaknesses already mentioned, why did the system allow such weak passwords in the first place?
WaitWaitWha··on So you think you could be an electrician?
this is already happening in several nations' military for high value equipment. the tech knows how to use most tools, but does not have full expertise on the specific equipment. Smart glasses not only guide the technician but allows remote expert assistance through the glasses.
WaitWaitWha··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
Yes, you are likely right.

I do not know that much about TPMS changing, only anecdotal. Every time a rim is messed up or the device fails the TPMS would change.

They might have been wrong when they told me why they "just" track car BT (and EZPass).

WaitWaitWha··on Federal judge calls Flock 'indiscriminate mass surveillance'
I have never seen TPMS ID trackers as they change relatively frequently and there are passive ones too; not to say they do not exists. Built-in BT ID of a vehicle or mobile phone rarely does.

Bluetooth and toll transponders (e.g, EZ-Pass, FastTrak) have been tracking things for decades.

First hand experience in operational rooms where both Bluetooth and the transponders are used for "traffic management" in Delaware and Washington DC. The readers are not at toll gates (only). they are sprinkled throughout highways and "high interest" areas. And, yes individual vehicles can be identified throughout their movements that is the very purpose of tracking so they can see the speed and flow of individual vehicles "to adjust intersection lights".

WaitWaitWha··on What is going on with ceiling fans
most forget, but fan blades need cleaning. any plastic blades, specially the clear one will look like cat vomit.

Imagine clear blades with each blade displaying cat hairballs spread out on the edges, spinning them above your head. It will harass you, give ammo to your in-laws to harass you, create marital strife (when are you going to clean that?) and then death as you fall off the ladder and break your neck on the coffee table, despite surviving four frontline deployments...

WaitWaitWha··on What is going on with ceiling fans
My MinkaAirs use 303MHz remotes. No pull chains. This frustrated me so much, last night i got an ESP32-S3 + CC1101 and reverse engineered the signal to the fans to be also control it from Home Assistant. Now, if i lose or break the controller, i can still switch the fans & built-in LED on & off another way. not perfect, but it is in my control.

WaitWaitWha··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
reading the article

> The agent took the phone away and only returned after approximately 45 minutes, during which Kennedy believes that data on the phone was copied. He was then released with no charges.

Does the owner, Mr. Kennedy has actual knowledge/proof if the phone was copied, or this is a guess? Might be missing from the article.

I am hard pressed to believe that this was for the exec.

what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander

I just wnat to know what bandwidth this exec has at his house. I want it.

WaitWaitWha··on Trump to sign executive order on foreign equipment in U.S. energy infrastructure
Yes, and no.

A US President definitely has the authority to restrict what is used on Government contracts. The Gov is the buyer so they can and do ask what they do and do not want used by the federal contractors.

Can a US President dictate for non-Gov contracts? Strong to weak to none. Strong around infrastructure providers (think power, water, electric, etc.) through the Defense Production Act of 1950 (DPA). This is where this EO falls, "banning certain foreign-manufactured equipment from the U.S. bulk-power system".

Conjecture, but i think this is targeting data centers...

WaitWaitWha··on How Claude's text watermarking works
Is there a method to opt out of this for non-EU people? I do not see such option in the article.
WaitWaitWha··on Dear people who work at the airport
I have gone through Schiphol and strip searched because the buttons on my winter coat were suspicious.
WaitWaitWha··on Dear people who work at the airport
This is not a US-only airport staff issue. I am on the road most of the last three decades and it is international. It is one, binding "quality" in every country. Most the airport staff's core competency rests elsewhere in almost all airports.

I am hedging because i have had nuggets of exceptional service and support here and there, even in nightmarish hellscapes like Heathrow. Flight attendants are a whole different area of joy and fears...

WaitWaitWha··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
Where would Netgate pfSense+ fit on that list?

I tried Mikrotik and the UI was wasting so much of my time, it was worth switching to Netgate, for me.

WaitWaitWha··on 98% isn't much
The author seems to equivocate by comparing completely different domains.

Whether 98% is acceptable, it depends on the cost of failure, not the percentage itself.

WaitWaitWha··on Ask HN: Is there a bad employers (who have a records of not paying) list?
An unethical company is likely would consider a lawsuit to put such private site out of business. A collection of unethical companies would be an exponentially higher risk to such site.
WaitWaitWha··on Captcha proves you're human. HATCHA proves you're not
> human + agent can right-click-solve it offline in a browser like Comet

You are almost certainly right. And yet, this is a good start. I did not think of this, so kudos to mondaycom.

> Just get the agents to pay to access the content

How would you identify who is a human versus agent?

How would you get them to pay? Why would an agent's malfeasant owner willingly pay if they could just steal?

WaitWaitWha··on Stealing Is a Skill
> When you recreate someone’s creation, you learn their story: every piece of brilliance, tradeoff, and imperfection.

I vehemently disagree that this happens. What you see is the end result, and thinking and struggling through for each element is not present. It is like copying the Mona Lisa and claiming the relationship with the sitting model and her smell and feel and complaints about cramped neck is all in the copied painting.

(Please do not change the cursor, specially the size. There is a reason I changed it.)

WaitWaitWha··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
I am not familiar with German business entity structures, so this is very interesting.

So, if I started a sole proprietorship, it is not possible to convert it to a full blown, privately held corporation in Germany?

WaitWaitWha··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
I think most red tapes and bureaucracies have loop holes. For example, a different, simpler type of business type, then conversion to the actual desired type. At least, this has been my experience in a few countries I worked in. Sometimes it will cost more up front, but if the end result is significantly faster, maybe it is worth it.

I am sorry he has to go through this just to start a business.
