WeEatnKid··on Pentagon ex-UFO chief says conspiracy theorists in government drive spending
the satanic panic was spurred by a very real conspiracy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Finders_(movement)
WeEatnKid··on When, specifically, is the best time for morning exercises?
Morning may be a convenient time for some people from a schedule perspective, but cortisol is very high when waking and decreases throughout the day. Not only is cortisol catabolic, it can increase the chance of injury during a workout. ~6 hours after waking is supposedly optimal, as your cortisol has dropped off since waking and your testosterone starts to peak -- this affects muscle protein synthesis. With that being said, exercising is often better than not exercising.
WeEatnKid··on An underrated CSS selector is the adjacency `+` operator
In combination with an element that has a state-related selector (eg :checked), you can implement something like modals or expandable lists without writing any javascript.
WeEatnKid··on Ask HN: Is 23andMe DNA testing worth it?
It's not just the drug companies but the insurance companies. If you can identify genes which put a person at high risk for an expensive medical treatment, you can develop a heuristic which adjusts premiums accordingly.
WeEatnKid··on Looks like people are slowly forgetting about the modulus operator
This particular use case (checking odd or even) doesn't even need to use the modulus operation -- which is expensive. A bitwise AND is much more efficient (provided that the compiler doesn't apply that optimization upon seeing % 2)
WeEatnKid··on Leonard Guarente's Anti-Aging Pill
1) I am reluctant to stop taking it. I am accustomed to the initial effects -- a missed dose here or there isn't noticeable, but I don't want to lapse into fatigue from abstaining or miss out on the benefits of sustained intake. There may not even be a benefit to long term supplementation so this concern is a bit unsubstantiated.

2) I didn't track or log differences in my exercise routines so I can't quantify anything. Qualitatively, its easier to exercise consecutively and I have been able to increase magnitude on my lifts by ~20% across the board. This could be attributed to shorter recovery time and reaping the benefits of adding volume to training. The strength gains plateaued 6 months in. I am in my 8th month of taking basis.

been taking this supplement for several months. Improvement in sleep quality and wakefulness was pretty noticeable on the second day. Had no idea how 'brain-fogged' I felt prior to taking it. It seemed to help recovery time with respect to exercise and I overcame some plateaus while taking it. Another fringe benefit I've noticed is that hangovers from drinking are non-existent. Would definitely recommend trying it, but your mileage may vary.

Chromadex also sells the same supplement but I do not know of any differences between what they provide and what Elysium provides.

WeEatnKid··on The problem isn't that life is unfair – it's that you don't know the rules
Life is unfair and its disingenuous to say it isn't. Yes, life is competitive but not all successful participation is genuine-- winning by any means necessary is incredibly toxic, especially when it involves 'winners' perpetuating bad heuristics to sustain status quo. If Oliver Emberton came from a different socio-economic background, he would be more aware of how much of a myth meritocracy is.
