Yaggo··on Researchers print structural colour with an inkjet printer
> The majority of printing processes today are performed using different > coloured pigments. However, there’s another type of colour called structural > colour, which typically uses nanoscale structures that interact with light > to produce a colour.

Doesn't the pigment act as ("natural") nanoscale structure as well?

Yaggo··on Email obfuscation: What works in 2026?
Same here, the address will eventually leak some way anyway.

I never got SpamAssassin working very well, but since moving my email hosting to Apple (from my own server), spam has not been a problem.

Yaggo··on Running Tesla Model 3's computer on my desk using parts from crashed cars
Maybe 0.1% of consumers even know what "root access" means.
Yaggo··on Running Tesla Model 3's computer on my desk using parts from crashed cars
Really? Which car manufacturer officially provides you a root access to your vehicle?
Yaggo··on VitruvianOS – Desktop Linux Inspired by the BeOS
Yeah, first I thought this is just a BeOS-inspired GUI theme, but there is more to it:

Nexus is Vitruvian's custom Linux kernel subsystem that brings BeOS-style
node monitoring, device tracking, and messaging to Linux — making it
possible to run Haiku applications on a standard Linux kernel.
Yaggo··on Europe sleepwalked into yet another energy crisis
Yes that's the best use of waste (next to not producing the waste in the first place). Also, those powerplants are usually combined type of powerplants which make them highly effective, i.e. they are producing both heat and electricity.

Nordics countries generally need lot of heating because of cold climate, which in cities is typically district heating, i.e. delivering the heat as hot water from big heating plants. Heat pumps are also very popular (air-to-air, air-to-water, geothermal).

For example, my house is entirely heated with 3 heat pumps, even in -25°C. From April to September 10 kW solar panels provide the most of energy, also charging my Tesla.

Yaggo··on Europe sleepwalked into yet another energy crisis
The rest of Europe needs an energy reform. They should take the Nordics countries as an example, where household usage of gas is very minimal / non-existent and everything is electricity based (electricity being the cleanest in the world). They are also leading the EV adaptation by big margin.
Yaggo··on The TV industry concedes that the future may not be in 8K
Sounds like you have too small TV or you too long viewing distance.

The differency between FullHD and 4K is very noticeable with THX-recommended viewing angles. I watch 98” from 3 meters.

Yaggo··on When Every Network is 192.168.1.x
Interesting idea! But I think such upgrade would take years, if not decades, to get widely adopted.
Yaggo··on Date is out, Temporal is in
The old JS Date API is far from perfect and I'm happy it being replaced, but part of the problem is various string-based formats and people being sloppy using them. Not to mention general complexity in time/date concept with timezones, summer time, leap seconds, etc.

For string format, just stick with ISO 8601. If you need to parse less-standard formats, use a robust library of your choise. The standard library should not try to support parsing zillion obscure formats. Outputting localized / human-readable format should be a responsibility of localization API anyway.

I also think that many libraries/APIs involving formatting things have some US centric design limitations, i.e. tendency to treat US formats as native and international support is often a bit after-thought. Especially with older stuff like the JS Date API.

Yaggo··on I wanted a camera that doesn't exist, so I built it
Care to share what driver board you have used?
Yaggo··on Cameras and Lenses (2020)
The content is gold but so is the web page design.
Yaggo··on Researchers achieved 1,270 Wh/L in an anode-free lithium metal battery
Yes, hybrids are much more efficient especially in city driving, not so much on highway. I used to drive a Prius back in the day.
Yaggo··on Researchers achieved 1,270 Wh/L in an anode-free lithium metal battery
30…40% is very ideal number, 15…25% is often the reality.
Yaggo··on 250MWh 'Sand Battery' to start construction in Finland
LFP is so cheap that small-scale thermal battery makes not sense for electricity generation. Even in big scale (like OP) it mostly makes sense for heat, e.g. district heating systems, industry process heat, etc.
Yaggo··on Everyone knows all the apps on your phone
The title should read: "Everyone knows all the apps on your Android phone"
Yaggo··on Standing desk might be as bad as sitting all day
I have worked as dev since age of 18, I am now 42. Never had any health problems. I do some irregular sports but not very much. I don’t pay much attention to ergonomics, I just simply change my sitting position often and also take short walks. I do use standing desk sometimes but not for whole day, just for short periods.
Yaggo··on Microsoft's new Outlook client moves your email to the cloud
Can it yet do proper quoting?
Yaggo··on macOS Sequoia Preview
Still no re-nameable virtual desktops? Bummer.
Yaggo··on When do we stop finding new music?
My #1 source for finding new music: teen-aged daughter
Yaggo··on Microsoft is driving users away
I bought my first Windows pc recently (a gaming rig). I was shocked to find that even Minesweeper had ads! “Microsoft has no taste” seems to still hold.
Yaggo··on Why is "pineapple" in English "ananas" in other languages? (2013)
Ananas is a rare example of word which is exactly same in Finnish, although our vocabulary is usually totally alien compared to most European languages.
Yaggo··on Car showed pop-up while driving
Tesla does excellent job here.
Yaggo··on Liberating the MacBook Air 2013 with Linux
Also it’s equipped with plain old HDMI and USB-A ports, still so useful.
Yaggo··on CoffeeScript for TypeScript
I liked CoffeeScript back in the days. However, it had its problems, the biggest being too terse / too much optional syntax.

I think Civet would success better if it addressed those issues by making the syntax a bit more familiar and consistent.

Keep the python/ruby-like significant indentation and everything-is-expression approach, but add little more verbosity for clarity, for example:

  - require and reserve {} for objects
  - require () in function calls
  - require explicit var/let/const
Also, because CoffeeScript got so controversial reputation, I would not ride on its legacy. Just market Civet as "TypeScript with modern syntax".
Yaggo··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
I think your experience reflects more your choise of car than EVs as technology. I have been driving Tesla happily for 3.5 years. I regularly make long distance trips to remote areas of Finland. No problems whatsoever. I pay 25 snt/kWh for on-the-road charging with Elli membership, about 12 snt at home.
Yaggo··on Plant-based meat is turning out to be a flop
When I started a vegan diet 20 years ago and asked for tofu in my local grocery store, they didn't even know the term (this happened in small town in Finland). Nowadays you can find a wide selection of various plant-based, meat-imitating products in every grocery store, even in small ones located in rural areas. Looks wildly successful to me, not a flop.
Yaggo··on When was the term ‘directory’ replaced by ‘folder’?
Haha, same here. I also found that some younger developers use GUI for navigating and manipulating the filesystem, instead of terminal. Made me a bit shocked first, just like the word “folder”, which I considered a “layman” word used by non-techies.
Yaggo··on EV batteries alone could satisfy short-term grid storage demand as early as 2030
You are mixing up battery management system (BMS) with thermal management system. BMS is practically mandatory with multi-cell li-ion systems. Even cheap consumer devices such as laptops have one.
Yaggo··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
I just had installed three Mitsubishi RW25 heat pumps, latest tech which works with efficiency factor of two in -30 C (-22 F), and still produce their nominal heating power of almost 4 kW in -20 C. I live in southern Finland so we rarely even experience such low temperatures. Very good ROI.
