YetAnotherNick··on A 10-year-old CNN outperforms frontier LLMs for skin cancer diagnosis
It is benchmaxxing because the test distribution in these kind of image dataset generally matches the training much more than real world image. It used to be the biggest issue in real AI in most companies that the test data and real data is either different or risk getting drifted apart.

So it is not solving a task, it is solving the same test set. You can easily see these in simple OCR datasets like mnist. Draw a number yourself. It would be much less accurate than the 99% that good architecture claims.

YetAnotherNick··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Yes if China somehow gets the fuel and subsidize it to sell it for cheaper in the global world, even the gulf state price will go down.
YetAnotherNick··on PHP Foundation 'under-funded' with one full-time staff member, director says
So you think those forks will solve underfunding problem?
YetAnotherNick··on The same AI request emits 8.5 times more CO2 in Texas than in Sweden
Datacenter wouldn't stop, and there would be some country or area which allows it. Unless they regulate the entire world, we should focus on lowering CO2 globally, and that means allowing datacenter in your neighour if your energy is better.
YetAnotherNick··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
Not a conspiracy theorist, but wait that really sounds effective. Just few months back I was wondering why were big datacenter companies not trying to sway the public that the water usage is low per query or whatever metric.

There will be protests and cases related to water usage of AI, but none of them would hold any ground. And winning the water case would just make the argument in their favour.

YetAnotherNick··on I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken
So you want Kimi to follow US law? If Saudi makes it illegal for llm to say something like being gay is normal, should they also catch Kimi CEO or other employees they could?
YetAnotherNick··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Huggingface incident was different in that there was no one else to point the blame to. That's why OpenAI apologised, provided data to independent researchers, worked with huggingface etc.

The case will be lot more complicated if someone uses Kimi to hack into a site. Should the person giving agent the command responsible or the CEO of kimi.

YetAnotherNick··on I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken
Yes. To take an extreme case, imagine some rich guy who runs sweatshop gets very rich and retires and becomes activist against it.
YetAnotherNick··on Dario, Please
There is a way they could. In mind only thing that will slow down the frontier is government taking control of the revenue.

So my proposal is AI companies decide which labs have come close to frontier and decide to slow it. Government decide to stop progress in that and they divide the revenue from all labs(for say 10 years), without any matter of where it is coming from. Any lab which reaches close to frontier gets a chunk in the pie. This will encourage labs to come close to the frontier but not dangerously close.

YetAnotherNick··on Nvidia dismisses "circular financing", says every $1 it invests brings back $100
It's not that simple. Of course there is inflation but in the long run in history, real money has increased massively. We have give opportunity of education to almost everyone, abolished slavery, given food and basic medicine to almost everyone. 100 years back having all of these sounded like a perfect world.
YetAnotherNick··on OpenAI’s Navier-Stokes release included a Lean 4 formal proof
Lean went other way on automation that there is no automation. Isabelle users frequently point that decades old isabelle is better than Lean on this. In the end Lean approach proved to be better with LLM as the outer loop is automation.
YetAnotherNick··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
Yeah I know. It's not like Apple is trying to hide it or most companies try to hide spyware, and I know how to check for Apple business manager or spywares.
YetAnotherNick··on Apple reveals 'shocking evidence' from ex-employee's MacBook in OpenAI suit
I have worked in 3 companies and none of them had installed anything on the work laptop. One IT department tried to, but I ignored all their messages. I would probably be pissed if I have to give up the right to work with privacy.

I had formatted the laptop both while getting it and returning it. I had filevault on and I wouldn't have shared my password.

YetAnotherNick··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
How much do they pay them?
YetAnotherNick··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
What does donation does for open source? Surely it wont come close to pay talented developers who create it. For cloud cost, there are few companies already giving generous free tier for open source.

The only thing that donation could pay for is marketing e.g. events and meetups.

Boring company maybe? It's not abandoned, but they likely gave up the idea of an underground system of roads under a city, and just focus on single project individually like traditional construction company.
YetAnotherNick··on Starbase, LA
> infrastructure like this probably has to be usable for something like 100 years to payoff

I don't think so. Likely the pad with last 10 years max.

In any case, I highly doubt that but in any case sea level is almost certainly going to rise below a meter. Filling a meter higher with sand is a pocket change for this project.

YetAnotherNick··on Starbase, LA
What was the incentive and was that specific to Tesla?
YetAnotherNick··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
That's why I said it will be slow. I think it will be decades long political control, not a military invasion.

China have more credible threat of bombing economically relevant building like TSMC, or capturing leaders and protestors like they already are doing in Hong Kong.

YetAnotherNick··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
My bet would be that invasion wouldn't look like quick war, but slow control of political power either through light force like economic blackmail, or through something similar to what US did with Venezuela.

Now that US has already opened the gate to labelling nation head as drug seller, this just eases things for China.

YetAnotherNick··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
I don't think Anthropic wants a stable experience on their consumer subscription plans. It is just used for customer acquisition who will then ask their employer to pay for enterprise plan(assuming most employer care about data control) which is based on tokens.

Most coders don't pay for tokens themselves. It's just on reddit and HN you would think that everybody does.

YetAnotherNick··on Palomar: A registry of Lean verified mathematics
> Considering how many people

That is a terrible metric to look into. Github being down is news, but on a long enough time horizon Gitlab or other provider isn't significantly better. It's just they are in news less often.

YetAnotherNick··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
Who is digitizing the books which are rare? Isn't it even more valuable to digitize for them now that they have new buyer which can pay 100s of times more.
YetAnotherNick··on Norway should buy OpenAI
It is possible for US to bomb anything. Just the retaliation could be huge.

Would you had said the same thing if a country like was developing and testing deadly virus on live population. I think in 5 years, it is possible that the AI will become that topic(if we assume AI becomes good and start hacking and controlling everything).

YetAnotherNick··on Norway should buy OpenAI
Yudkowsky's solution of detecting and physically shutting down non complying datacenter, including bombing if the country doesn't cooperate, isn't too much out of the question.

We would have done the same if it is about virus or nuclear weapons, and AI could become serious existential threat in the next 5 years.

YetAnotherNick··on Things That Used to Be Normal and Are Now a Luxury
New cloth used to be luxury when I was a kid. Now everyone has 100s of pieces. I remember sewing and wearing cloth, and no one does it now. Also he kinda answered his question:

> it(natural fiber cloth) lasted less than shirts I’ve paid 5€ for

For being offline and in silence, it is as achievable as ever, if not more. Companies/friends etc. now are more respectful of time and being offline or not picking up call now than they were 20 years ago.

YetAnotherNick··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
If there are very few copies and no one wants to even spend $100 to scan it, likely the book wont be bought by anyone in any case and it would rot/thrown away in another 50 years if AI companies had not digitized it.
YetAnotherNick··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
> What if the book has been out of print for 50 years?

Same answer? They raise the price and print more copies.

You can just print even 1 copy, just the cost per print will be higher.

In fact publishers getting some profit on the tail end of books is the best thing that could happen to authors and publishing industry.

YetAnotherNick··on We Tracked a Shipment of Rare Books. It Ended at an Amazon AI Training Facility
> what do you think will happen?

They raise the price and print more copies?

YetAnotherNick··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
I know the technical reason. I was contesting the GP's comment that most site display banner "Instead of complying". Most website needs basic tracking and there is nothing wrong in it.

We are just conditioned to see it without difference in basic tracking and tracking all your clicks across site and selling it to advertisers.
