ZetaZero··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
It should be an improvement for people to get a career in something they enjoy, instead of what pays the most money.
ZetaZero··on Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses?
"Sure it might produce convincing examples of human speech, but it fundamentally lacks an internal point of view that it can express..."

Sounds just like the chess experts from 30 years ago. Their belief at the time was that computers were good at tactical chess, but had no idea how to make a plan. And Go would be impossible for computers, due to the branching factor. Humans would always be better, because they could plan.

GPT (or a future successor) might not be able to have "an internal point of view". But it might not matter.

ZetaZero··on Smartphones wiped out 97% of the compact camera market
...my relatively ancient D800...

Launched five years ago at $3000.

ZetaZero··on The collapse of FTX and Sam Bankman-Fraud is looking quite spicy for journalism
Three months ago, FTX was offering 8% interest APY. FTX knew they were in trouble, and needed new deposits to stay afloat. This makes it a ponzi.
ZetaZero··on Writing down what I do in Obsidian
> I pay $15 a year to have it sync across iCloud devices.

Curious how you do this? The Obsidian Sync option is $96/year.

ZetaZero··on AI and the Future of Pixel Art
Agreed. AI art will continue to improve.

This reminds of of the chess computers from 30 years ago. Experts were convinced computers would never beat GM humans, based on the state-of-the-art of the time. They never took into account all the future advancements in hardware and software.

ZetaZero··on AlphaFold’s new rival? Meta AI predicts shape of 600M proteins
> Can anyone describe how/where this actually fits into Meta's businesses?

AI can predict the behavior of the users, feeding them as many relevant ads as possible, while keeping them engaged.

ZetaZero··on PayPal’s Objectionable Terms Are Back, $2500 Fines for Content They Don’t Like
How will Bitcoin fix it? If I buy a video card with bitcoin, but get sent a brick instead, how does "Blockchain as Arbiter" get my bitcoins back?
ZetaZero··on Rooftop wind energy innovation claims 50% more energy than solar at same cost
The company has not yet provided any real numbers. I want to know how much electricity is generated at a specific wind speed. The lack of this most basic number leads me to believe this isn't as good as it sounds.
ZetaZero··on Elevator Saga: Elevator programming game
A mostly curated list: https://www.reddit.com/r/programminggames/comments/d5pg8q/a_...
ZetaZero··on North Paw
Some places have geographic features that make the cardinals easy. Like in Denver, the mountains are always west.
ZetaZero··on SEC charges Kim Kardashian for unlawfully touting crypto security
The fine is supposed to act as a deterrent, right?
ZetaZero··on How often do Super GMs achieve 100% engine correlation?
From 2022, Tata Steel Round 9 – 25 January 2022 Magnus (2865) played Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), rated 2767 at the time

From 2021, Tata Steel Round 12, 30.01.2021 Magnus (2862) played Radosław Wojtaszek (Poland) rated 2705 at the time

ZetaZero··on Choose the smallest number not chosen yet
picking 1 would still dominate over any other strategy, in a head-to-head.

However, if you are trying to maximize your H2H score against a pool of contestants, a cooperation strategy, where you both alternated taking the lower number would be close to optimal.

ZetaZero··on Choose the smallest number not chosen yet
I believe this strategy will work against any other strategy, not just mirror strategy. Of course, against mirror strat, 1/N is correct.
ZetaZero··on Make-A-Video: AI system that generates videos from text
Right and wrong.

It's not over for traditional moving-making. It would be decades before the software and hardware could surpass. But it will improve tremendously, just like computers do for nearly everything.

ZetaZero··on Dear Chess World
He admitted to cheating at 16. He's only 19 now.
ZetaZero··on Globalstar SEC filing, Apple to use 85% of its satellite network capacity
Apple also funds much of TSMC's growth, without any pathway to ownership. Apple is likely just buying top priority.
ZetaZero··on Hydrogen battery startup says it has $700M order backlog
There have been recent advances in sand batteries to store heat. Use the excess energy to heat the sand. Then pull heat from it in the winter to heat the house. Unsure if this would scale down to personal usage.

ZetaZero··on Building future cities out of timber could save 100B tons of CO2 emissions
Engineered wood solved that problem. Plywood is a type of engineered wood. Same for gluelams, LVLs, and CLTs. These are typically stronger than solid timber, including old growth.

It does take more energy to fabricate, but still much less than concrete and steel.

ZetaZero··on The Original “Universal” Port by Atari
I had both 99/4a and later the C64. The C64 was just much more open, a much better computer to learn on.
ZetaZero··on How to pay your rent with your open source project (2020)
The accepted definition of "open source" includes the ability to modify and redistribute freely. A "non-commercial use" clause limits this
ZetaZero··on Build Your Own Imagen Text-to-Image Model
Agreed. I liken this to computer chess, and later computer go. It was long believed both were impossible.
ZetaZero··on More energy on less land: The drive to shrink solar’s footprint
Here in the US, we could power the entire country with solar panels by just using 1% of the land now dedicated to agriculture.
ZetaZero··on 4-Die Chess
Today's "classic version" is just a variant that allows pawns to move two squares on their first move.
ZetaZero··on Senate passes bipartisan bill to subsidize U.S.-made semiconductor chips
Intel had profits of $20B last year. They could easily build a new modern fab every year if they wanted to. But it makes more sense for them to spend tax payers money instead.
ZetaZero··on It’s time to leave the leap second in the past
> By 2055, the "minute" displayed on a clock may be incorrect, which again may cause issues with legal timestamps.

I'm not following here. What defines "legal timestamps" in our current system? I'm unaware of any laws in the US that uses the actual position of the sun to determine the time.

"Noon" when the sun is at the highest point, can vary over an hour across a timezone.

ZetaZero··on DALL·E now available in beta
> If an artist has a well-known art style, and this algorithm was trained on it and can copy that style...

A lawyer could argue that the algorithm is producing a derivative work of the copyrighted input.

ZetaZero··on A brief history of nobody wants to work anymore
> Kids are like 80x or more likely to kill themselves than to be killed in a school shooting.

Sure, if you limit the numbers to just school shootings. Why not count all kid deaths by firearms? A kid is twice as likely to die by bullet than by suicide.

School shootings are just the currently most visible form of kid death by bullet.

ZetaZero··on I Sell Onions on the Internet (2019)
IMO, the story is not about the onions. It's about building a business from a domain name. A good domain name is worth x10 in marketing. The other HN articles show more of strategy of building around a domain name.
