Zren··on The state of Linux music players in 2026
> less intuitive than I’d like it to be giant translucent strawberry in the middle of my screen at all times

You can disable the background image that in the options under Appearance. It's a holdover from Clementine's branding which I also find annoying. I also dislike the glow animation on currently playing track in the playlist which can also be disabled.

Zren··on Hollow Knight: Silksong causes server chaos on Xbox, Steam, and Nintendo
Wait the original was only $15?! I got Hollow Knight in a Humble Bundle so I had no idea how cheap that amazing game was.

No wonder Silksong is only $20. I saw the memes about the devs asking for $20 and assumed it was $20 more like $60=>$80 or something like that.

Zren··on Is an Intel N100 or N150 a better value than a Raspberry Pi?
Also, probably the price of the connector. USB A is also a simple standard and no one will expect to treat it as a display out.

Zren··on I tried to make something in America
The video has covers how Tool and Die wages have dropped below the median wage. We're also importing the tools/molds from China and manufacturing the parts "in the US" instead of the reverse.

I remember another Youtuber Linus Tech Tips creating their own injection molds in BC so that it would be harder for copycats. The entire Screwdriver isn't made in Canada though. The shaft and bits are made in China or somewhere else in Asia IIRC. The reason they were able to do that though is because there already existed an injection molding company nearby for them to work with though.

Zren··on I tried to make something in America
It's neat finding out that his earlier video on stamping sheet metal and bending it into shapes was actually him doing research for the handle of this scrubber.

Zren··on Self-hosting your own media considered harmful according to YouTube
Netflix has continually raised prices, and earns more from the ad plans than those paying more for zero ads.

Becoming a paying customer is just a negotiation with advertisers to raise their rates until Netflix concedes to what they want. Since they know you have more discretionary income Netflix can also charge more for ads. They're also incentivized into turning those customers into ad supported by increasing the no ad plan cost.

Zren··on Nintendo Obtains New Anti-Palworld Patent and Seeks Even More
The patent mentions the ability to aim the pokeball which wasn't in the first 3 Gameboy games.

Does modern Pokémon start battles by throwing a pokeball to release a monster to begin fighting?

Zren··on Mkbsd: Download all the wallpapers in MKBHD's "Panels" app for free
IMO, they should have made it a simple mailed print/postcard subscription with an email newsletter with the jpg wallpaper. You could even provide access to a private wallpaper app that changes it for you monthly if people want that.

LTT has the right mentality that supporting an influencer should give you something physical for your support or when asking a superchat on a livestream that may or may not get answered.

Zren··on I Hacked My Friend's Phone to Show How Easy It Is [video]
Youtubers regularly swap the video thumbnail + title. Youtube even has tools to A/B test various thumbnails + titles nowadays for different users.

I can confirm that the title "I Hacked My Friend's Phone to Show How Easy It Is" was the actual title when the video was uploaded. However you're right that it now looks like it changed to "Exposing The Flaw In Our Phone System" a day later.

Watch an older Veratasium video about Youtube's title+thumbnail clickbait: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2xHZPH5Sng

Zren··on I Hacked My Friend's Phone to Show How Easy It Is [video]
Feels like SS7 was deliberately left vulnerable from requests within the country for tracking purposes. A lot of the security seems to be done with firewalls within the walled garden so it's easier for the five eyes to track cell phones live without giving direct access to the databases.

That said, the real world example Veratasium used was chilling.

Having LinusTechTips as a 2nd example (whos showing off his new apple phone) was a nice counter too. I'm pretty sure LTT uses multi factor+user auth though so I'm guessing that sms 2fa email was an alt email for personal use.

Gonna have to watch that 2014 presentation on ss7 it seems.

Zren··on DOJ may want to break up Google
Chromium/Chrome can also get ChromeOS and it's hardware division since most of the complications in chrome are there to reimplement a Phone/Desktop OS.
Zren··on DOJ may want to break up Google
> What of the small, but important, products that Google hasn't killed yet? ... But what of say, Google Fonts?

Google Fonts can act as a tracking pixel, the bandwidth cost is probably offset by the slight amount of user data it obtains.

Zren··on Opinion: I'd rather have a headphone jack and a microSD slot than AI in my phone
Samsung A15 has a headphone jack, 128gb storage, OLED screen, and SD card slot in the SIM tray.

It should have 4 years of updates too, which at $270 CAD is $5.63 per month of support.

Zren··on Voyager 1 is back online: NASA spacecraft returns data from all 4 instruments

> Leia: Chewie, get up here! We're going into an asteroid field! > Han: That's no problem. Just don't hit whatever asteroid might be within a hundred thousand kilometres. > Han: They're in nice stable orbits too, so it's easy to avoid them. > Leia: Okay, fine. We're going into a massive region of randomly moving, closely packed, enormous giant space rocks. > Han: Gaaaaaah!

Zren··on Cocoa surpasses $10k a tonne as shortages squeeze 'out of control' market
LastWeekTonight w/ John Oliver did a segment on Chocolate 4 months ago btw. Cocoa production is definitely underpaid so it wouldn't be terrible for this higher price to stick. It's not like the chocolate companies will drop their prices after they mark them up for months.

Zren··on Microsoft Edge now steals your data from Google Chrome after an update
The tools to decrypt the user data folder in chrome would quickly be available to edge since theyre both chromium forks.

All edge needs to do is tell the chromium code to load from the google profile at startup, then change the profile directory after loading to save it to make the copy.

Zren··on What made Apollo a success? (1971) [pdf]
Wait, are they not using Starship to refuel? If they are then that's 1 Crew ship (SLS?) + 1 Starship with 16 round trips. Considering we don't know the failure rate for refueling with Starship, they might need 2-3 Starship rockets.

Actually, are they going to be refueling in orbit with crew on board? Or are they launching a rocket into orbit and refueling it, then launching another rocket with the crew to dock with the fueled rocket?

> NASA says SpaceX’s next Starship flight could test refueling tech

> In 2020, NASA announced agreements with four companies—Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, SpaceX, and a Florida-based startup named Eta Space—to prove capabilities in the area of refueling and propellant depots using cryogenic propellants.

Ah, it's first come first served.

> without astronauts onboard. Once that is successful, NASA will clear Starship for a crew landing on the agency's Artemis III mission, marking the astronauts' return to the lunar surface for the first time since 1972.

So it seems they'll use a Starship for crew as well?

Zren··on Canada to require registration of podcasters and streaming services
They could lower it to 100k and it probably won't affect most podcasts. Any point below that isn't really worth the extra bureaucratic hurdle anyway as the author will file taxes anyway.
Zren··on GitHub will not rollback their new Home Feed for performance reasons

> With the latest feed update on September 6, 2023, we made changes to the underlying technology of the feed to improve overall platform performance. As a result, we removed the functionality for “push events for repositories a user is subscribed to”. We don’t take these changes lightly, but as our community continues to grow tremendously, we have to prioritize our availability, user experience, and performance.

Zren··on CloudFlare’s last Warrant Canary was published over a year ago
That usually happens when I'm faking my user agent to use the most popular (windows + Chrome). Once I go back to the default (Linux + Firefox) then CloudFlare seems to allow it.
Zren··on Google vs. the Open Web
Can't the browser just fake itself to look like chrome/safari without extensions to get the WEI server token?

* CON: The problem is that the WEI server could change it's tracking faster than the browser app updates it's fakeness though. There's more money in bypassing adblockers than there is in blocking them.

* CON: If it does fake itself, when you return to the original website it can assume there's no adblocker and fail to load with the adblocker unlike now where it's usually ignored.

Zren··on Firefox 115 can remotely disable any extension on any site
Tampermonkey (Userscripts) has a similar default blocklist. It blocks by default:

example.org, paypal.tld, stripe.com, deutsche-bank-24.tld, bankofamerica.tld, apis.google.com, www.facebook.com/plugins/, platform.twitter.com/widgets

Zren··on Hacker News needs a Dark Mode
I made a Stylus theme for https://news.ycombinator.com and https://hckrnews.com

I personally disable all extensions except uBlockOrigin from auto-updating. If they break, then that prompts me to re-check if they're legit or if they've been bought out (like Stylish) before updating.

Zren··on The Reddit blackout will continue
Then you can get an LLM company to easily scrape Reddit for $5 instead of $100000. The main reason for this change is to monetize the usage, not the access.
