_--__--__··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
The sole purpose of the French state is to delay the pension time bomb however possible so someone else is in charge and held accountable when it goes off.
_--__--__··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
Gates and Bezos slept around with younger women and lost more in divorces than 99.9999% of men could ever dream of making. Elon has recreated the backstabbing and infighting of imperial harem politics with a bunch of women he didn't even physically sleep with.

Despite his other failings you have to give Zuck credit for genuinely being a wholesome wifeguy by all appearances.

_--__--__··on The Milwaukee Brewers win the first World Series title in franchise history
It was called that going back to the era when baseball was "America's Game." There's a much newer competition called the World Baseball Classic where actual national teams compete against each other, where Japan and many Central/South American countries are the most successful other than the US.
_--__--__··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
I have a friend who was working at Roblox on in house classifier evals on texture generation (I think they were working with some enterprise version of Stable Diffusion?), specifically on adult content filtering and protected IP replication. That company seems predatory in many ways to me, but I'm pretty sure they aren't intentionally giving kids the ability to generate pornographic content on their platform.
_--__--__··on Genie 4
+1 on fighting games, an interesting trend in that genre right now is that many of the latest titles (realistically everything other than SF6) are having trouble with player retention, while AI-assisted netcode updates for old titles like SF4 and Tekken 6 seem like more compelling products
_--__--__··on LLM agents play Pokemon showdown
The difference is that many believe that the kind of bot detection algorithms used by chess.com probably can't be made for PS, which means there's no real way to give average players a bot-free ladder experience. It also basically invalidates Smogon's suspect test system for rule updates, which assumes that players who can reach an ELO cutoff have reasonable views on how to improve a format.

There's online tournament cheating potential as well, but from my time in that community it was pretty common knowledge that ghosting by top level human players was just accepted if you were in the right circles.

_--__--__··on Teardown of a $1000 Voting Machine
You believe that US state actors have influence over this Italian consultant group and are trying to spread mistrust of the 2026 US elections by analyzing flaws of a machine used in Lombardy in 2017?
_--__--__··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
should have enclosed it in a shell to look like a crappy USB A to thunderbolt adapter that some exec bought at an airport kiosk and left behind in the tv
_--__--__··on Reddit mod ordered to pay Nintendo $4.5M in Switch piracy lawsuit
Here's a problem that I didn't even know existed: on both browsers I tested, opening this article in reader mode replaces the page contents with a Dell laptop ad.
_--__--__··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Across most of the world it's pretty difficult to walk around a high traffic area without coming across someone using a smartphone to record their surroundings for FB Live or Instagram, and it's been that way since long before anyone had Meta glasses.
_--__--__··on The two Christian saints who are the Buddha
Generally true, but it is quite funny that by pure chance Squanto was a baptized Catholic.
_--__--__··on No constitutional right to clean water, federal court finds
This ruling seems obviously correct to me? The plaintiffs claimed this was a 14th amendment issue, but at the time the 14th was added cholera outbreaks were still somewhat common in the US and there was no remote notion of safe drinking water provided universally by municipal governments.

Hopefully there is some other legal redress under a different law or EPA regulation, but the courts can't just give in to faulty reasoning like that because people were wronged by the government.

_--__--__··on Check if a file was made with Claude
Anthropic's legal team cares
_--__--__··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Many opponents of Brave online are thoroughly convinced that Brave Rewards (which gives you their Ethereum coin in exchange for showing ads as OS notification) is on by default, when it isn't. They also claim that this replaces blocked ads on webpages (this may have been true very early, I didn't use Brave back then).
_--__--__··on Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America
Do you think Google maps made a moral choice to eg show different names for the Sea of Japan in Russia and Korea?
_--__--__··on Y Combinator's Ankit Gupta faces backlash over H-1B comments
Most of the people talking like that are far removed from real power and influence. But I suppose extending your twitter flamewar to include the chair of the FTC is one way to change that...
_--__--__··on The Wonders of the Male Human Pelvis
I doubt there was much evolutionary selection for the ability to run more than 50 miles at once (my understanding is that the female advantage in ultra endurance has to do with muscle/fat composition and lower total skeletal mass, which is a major tradeoff to make for other areas).
_--__--__··on Why travellers are obsessed with foreign supermarkets
I live near the SF location and the biggest issues seem outside of their control: tax/import costs making things way more expensive than I know they would be in Japan plus spiky demand for the prepared food limiting the quality/quantity they can offer.

The main issue that's actually on them is the authentic Japanese aisle width which doesn't work at all for the size or manners of Americans.

_--__--__··on Terry A. Davis Quotes
Was thinking about Terry last week as the anniversary of his death came by. I have a lot to say about him and the way online society treats people like him, but not now.

For those who haven't seen it, this is one of the better write ups on TempleOS as a piece of technology to evaluate on its own merits:

_--__--__··on Norway should buy OpenAI
I think the resource curse didn't apply to Norway because they had an established post-industrial economy for hundreds of years before they got into oil exporting (they didn't even start drilling until the 1960s, 50 years after Venezuela or the Arab states).
_--__--__··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
Yeah this is awful. Every codebase becomes a graveyard of references to ideas or behaviors that were barely considered. It's probably also a compounding source of context poisoning when a minority of the comments/documentation are about how the current code actually works.
_--__--__··on DEF CON crowd suspected in fake-hotspot attack on Delta flight
alternatively: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htCJTPu8GPE
_--__--__··on US hires over 2k video gamers as air traffic controllers
ATCs are chronically understaffed in a way that endangers all of us, and the FAA has been under scrutiny for their hiring practices for over a decade https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39184451

It's equally plausible to me that this is an example of "we need to try something and this is something" or just deflection from the prior criticism.

_--__--__··on Japanese Govt Asks US Govt to Stop Using Mario, Pokemono, Naruto Meme Postings
Metaphoric use of 'decapitation' referring to an organization or state is normal and idiomatic in American English, especially if you spend a lot of time talking to people with military backgrounds. There's plenty of other stuff going on right now that's actually worth criticism.
_--__--__··on Is Kentucky about to give billions in tax breaks to data centers?
I'm from Jefferson county KY, the FAA had to fund a sound proofing program for a huge part of that area because one of the 5 busiest cargo airports in the world is smack in the middle of Louisville metro. Having lived in NoVA as well, the data center noise really doesn't compare (and there's no risk of the data centers dropping a 100 ton firebomb on your home the way UPS did last year).
_--__--__··on Thomson Reuters built its own AI model that now ranks among the best
They need to convince 65 year old law firm partners, not you or me.
_--__--__··on Stacked PRs are now live on GitHub
GitHub has about as much of a shot of doing that as I do of fixing my allergies by updating the base human genome.
_--__--__··on Show HN: Ex Situ – Open-source spatial index of displaced cultural artifacts
Russia still has a huge portion of the Nazi stolen artifacts but I have no idea how many are in public museums.
_--__--__··on House passes bill to enact year-round Daylight Saving Time across the country
But we're cool with this bill pushed by people whose primary concern is more tee times in Florida in January?

I lived most of my life in a place that already has days with post 8AM winter sunrises on Standard time and can only really get up with the sun. Permanent DST forces many people to start their day long before sunrise and somehow I'm supposed to believe that's the 'good for sleep' option.

_--__--__··on House passes bill to enact year-round Daylight Saving Time across the country
People who work in finance and certain fields of law on the west coast start their day at 9AM eastern time.
