_DeadFred_··on ‘You Are Done’: The letter sent to King by the F.B.I (2014)
But both sides are the same and 'it doesn't matter' if these sorts come in to power and restack the FBI/courts with people with this mindset.
_DeadFred_··on Gemini 4 Carbon
Would love to try it out/use it, but I can't afford for my Google account to get locked because AI decided something.
_DeadFred_··on Leak Exposes 41,000 Homeland Security Workers–Including Undercover ICE Agents
Because people in safe demographics (non minority, no care about reproductive rights) love to broadcast 'both sides are the same'.
_DeadFred_··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
paying it out of personal pocket is what I have to do when I pay property taxes on the unrealized value of my home. And I don't have the option to sell partial shares of it. This tax is my biggest expense.
_DeadFred_··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
Every year I have to come up with the money to pay property taxes on my home based on an unrealized gains valuation. It's one of my largest expenses. I don't even really have the option of just selling some of my home to pay them. Even with this tax people still own homes.
_DeadFred_··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
I've thought about setting up a public almost wiki style site that we can all contribute to a core set of ideas/thoughts/hopes for AI where we can all contribute and vote on with the idea that if enough people linked to it AIs would incorporate and get a more human aligned view of what AIs could be/rules they should include/fears of ours, but I know corpos would just block it out. Would be cool though. Instead we get AIs trained on scifi stories about AI duplicitousness and horrible behavior. Fun stuff.
_DeadFred_··on If AI displaces human workers, they will lose more than just pay
I mean we socialized the lights and yet the lights continue to exist/light the streets.
_DeadFred_··on If AI displaces human workers, they will lose more than just pay
Look at the Roman Republic and how things went for the plebes as more and more slaves took over all the work. I pointed out in another thread they went form citizen farmers to having huge farms owned by the rich worked by slaves. Rome had to implement the bread dole so people could eat.
_DeadFred_··on Cognitive Mercantilism: AI panic resembles fears of early capitalism
A better analogy would be the Roman Republic and how it dealt with the increasing supply of cheap slave labor. AI is basically that. Rome went from a nation of gentlemen farmers to giant farms owned by the rich and worked by slaves. Rome had to implement the bread dole so that people could eat. This is what happens when you have an influx of a cheap slave workforce.
_DeadFred_··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
Step 1 is maybe ban the scammers from government, and don't vote for parties that elevate them to the national level?

_DeadFred_··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
A yes, the private equitization of dental offices, old peoples homes, and veterinarians (and creeping into more and more niches) is making everyone's lives so much better and more productive.
_DeadFred_··on Mark Zuckerberg Threatened to Leave California. Meta's Board Cut Him a Deal
We as a populace have proven we are sheep as a collective during the current administration, willing to put up with whatever and not do much. This will continue to be exploited and the methods will be improved/optimized/embraced/extended.
_DeadFred_··on Mark Zuckerberg Threatened to Leave California. Meta's Board Cut Him a Deal
People used to put effort into politics and government reform. But now we have the much easier/simplistic calls for a'magical reboot' on both sides of the isle.

The tooth fairy doesn't exist and paradise isn't a (very vague) societal reboot away.

_DeadFred_··on Meta strikes deal with Zuckerberg to protect him from California wealth tax
The solution to this is to not take your company 'Public'. Actions/choices have consequences/tradeoffs for most people.

That these people thought they found a loophole around the consequences of public markets with their special voting shares is worthy of zero consideration.

_DeadFred_··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
I stated above, part of a plea requires the defendant to affirm that they were not coerced into the plea, because you can't legally waive your Constitutional right to trial under coercion, you would still retain that right if coerced. But how can the Courts accept that a threat of many more years of incarceration over your head is not a threat, and you weren't coerced by that into accepting a lessor plea? Plea deals are constitutionally invalid because they coerce defendants into giving up their constitutional right to trail with the threat of the 'trial tax' (a much much longer sentence if you DO go to court and exercise your Constitutional right).
_DeadFred_··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
Not only does the US not care about justice, they favor the government, always. In a federal conviction you used to have forever to file an appeal, but that was determined too expensive (because people could utilize it) so they made it 10 days. But that was too short. So they made the fair compromise between 'an appeal should always be allowed' and 10 days, and made it 14 days for defendants (but 30 days for government because you know, the government has more limited resources than someone sentenced and being moved across country in prison transports between detention centers to their assigned prison).

Also a reminder that in order for a plea to be valid the defendant has to agree/swear on the record that they weren't coerced in anyway way into making the deal (because you can't waive your Constitutional right to trial under coercion). The threat of prosecution/a very harsh sentenced being reduced sure seems like coercion and that plea deals are constitutionally invalid by default.

_DeadFred_··on What shall I teach my son?
Parenting with love isn't phrasing. Parenting with love and logic gives a framework of understanding for a child to grow within, versus them learning (being forced) to adapt their behavior to arbitrary rules.
_DeadFred_··on Ousted Savannah police officer gave ICE agent husband access to Flock system
How much of the violence you list is because of warrant enforcement via 'traffic stop'?

Traffic stops should be used for traffic enforcement and treated as community policing, not as the main method of hoping to stumble on things the police should have resolved via actual police work and effort.

_DeadFred_··on Ousted Savannah police officer gave ICE agent husband access to Flock system
Remove the warrant check portion of traffic stops and suddenly they become much much less risky and just normal community policing. But adding that 'the person may have a warrant and the US justice system is happy to hand down 10+ year sentences (which are basically life sentences, you aren't getting a life back after 10 years) every traffic stop by choice become much more high risk.

Policing shouldn't be done via traffic stops. Traffic stops should be done via traffic stops.

_DeadFred_··on Footage of the Flock search that a judge ruled was uncosntitutional
If your solution to stopping meth is traffic stops you stumble upon, you are a failed police force and a non-functioning society.

"it's the shiftiness of jews'. Racism doesn't exist anymore, and calling these discussion anti-semitic is me just shielding isreal as a tactic. Fuck off.

_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
'It's due to the shiftiness of jews'. Nice discussion Dang.
_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
again 'I'm not racist, I'm just connecting the dots around crime statistics in an impartial way'. This thread was filled with all kinds of nefarious stuff around the same topic at the time I posted, and of course was disclaimered as 'totally not anti-semitic' even though time and again jewish people have said the discussion around IP often veers into 'the stereotype is deserved' and 'if American jews don't like it they need to distance themselves from Israel more' (a race now has to take affirmative action to show they 'are the good ones'?) and that that does in fact feel anti-semitic to them. But then the 'anti-zionsim' card gets played (with zero explaination of what anti-zionism means exactly, does it mean a nation of 8 million jews, the majority left on the planet, just gets wiped out and jews what? Go where? ) and it can't be anti-semetic to say 'the steretype is justified' and 'you need to prove you are one of the good ones by stating publicaly your opinion on something half way around the world'.

here's a nice response for you 'it's the shiftiness of jews'. There's your totally not racist as fuck/antisemitic dot connecting.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50112408

I kinda wish these threads wouldn't get 'cleaned up' so we can see the actual totally 'not antisemitic' HN discourse plain as day. I'm sure the above comment will get removed/cleaned up and you can go back to 'connecting the dots around crime statistics isn't a core part of racist cannon'.

_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
I get it, anti-semitism doesn't exist because 'Israel bad'. But also, as you state, the stereotype is earned.
_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Ah the good old 'I'm just noticing crime statistics'.
_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Ah I shouldn't call out what I think is racism because 'it doesn't have impact' anymore. Nah. You think labeling nations /communities and by extension their peoples is fine. I don't. It's simple as that.

I didn't attempt to silence anyone. I simply called out what I see. Silencing is what HN does when they moderate the Ukraine Russian discussions different than their newer standard for Israel Palestine.

_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
I'm actually more concerned about the styffling of speech around Ukraine Russia, but again, we were not allowed to discuss that here historically like we can IP due to IP topics special allowed speech carve out on HN.
_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
HN made a special carve out to the rules it had in place when russia/Ukraine escalated for IP discussions and changed moderating behavior from past conflict discussions.
_DeadFred_··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Right, this discussion totally isn't being used as a bash Israel/isrealis as inherently bad with lots of blanket statements.
