__float··on Anonymous shell companies buying American real estate
Do you own any property this way?
__float··on Things that I think will be important in the next decade
You give a lot of weight to cryptocurrency/blockchain/similar tech, and there's a lot more out there than that. I'm still waiting to see one reasonably decent application of a blockchain, and remarkably few of the things you mentioned provide much more than opportunities for scams and speculation.
__float··on Envoy Mobile
Unfortunately, browsers don't give very much (if any) control over the networking components -- so you lose out on possibilities for much observability, you can't do things like implement HTTP/2 if your browser doesn't already give it to you, you can't tune DNS stuff at all, etc. Especially as, right now, it only supports gRPC, which requires a proxy on the server side if you want to use gRPC from the browser.

What benefits would you like to see for a browser-based app?

__float··on 64 and unemployed: One man's struggle to be taken seriously as a job applicant
...why should he start as a janitor when he has years of experience doing the jobs he's apply for?
__float··on Ask HN: Why is it harder to learn new things the older you get?
I think the issue here is not learning new things, but having the time to sit down and focus on them. As a child and young adult, you usually have fewer distractions -- whether a significant other, a mentally or physically exhausting job, bills to pay, etc. -- and spending hours on a single task is not so difficult.

I have found a lot of success in waking up earlier to do the "learn a new thing" part of my routine, before the hectic work day begins.

__float··on The New York Hustle of Amazon’s Second Headquarters
Has anyone seen specifics on how they'll be held accountable? They've made promises for x jobs with $y average salaries, but if they don't meet that, then what?

https://ny.curbed.com/2018/11/16/18098589/amazon-hq2-nyc-que... suggests that nearly $1.3 billion is not tied to any amount of job creation at all.

__float··on Mtime comparison considered harmful
At work, we frequently build in a Linux VM (using VirtualBox through Vagrant) from a macOS host, and the default shared folder does not support symlinks. We use NFS as a workaround.
__float··on Peeking under the hood of redesigned Gmail
It's surprising to me that Gmail doesn't take more advantage of code splitting and lazy bundle loading -- I wonder if it's common practice among "modern" JS apps (i.e. the Angular-using ones like Cloud Console), but difficult to do with GWT.
__float··on This alleged Pixel 3 Lite has an actual headphone jack
This looks like a non-Google clone to me.
__float··on Microservices to Workflows: Evolution of Jet's Order Management System
I think one of the most interesting pieces here is the visualizer!

Quite often, we end up building systems that rely on complex DAGs, but without a way to visualize them. GraphViz only works up to a certain size, and you lose most ability for interactivity with them.

I'm curious if anyone recognizes if any components of that visualizer are open source -- I'd love to dig in deeper.

__float··on Show HN: Gmail Classic – CSS for Reverting Gmail's New Look
Do you have a screenshot?

There's a fair bit of obscure CSS here; how long has it been working for? I would guess the autogenerated class names change from time to time.

__float··on Ask HN: What's the largest amount of bad code you have ever seen work?
Perl, right?
__float··on Ask HN: Do you like to see “Back to top” buttons on websites?
I've always wondered about these. I don't care on desktop, because high velocity scrolling on a MacBook is easy. On mobile, the iOS pattern to tap the top of the screen is my go-to, I find these buttons to waste valuable screen real estate.
__float··on Compare career levels across companies
Why is "hard tech" == "low-level"? There are plenty of interesting and challenging technical problems that are "higher level" but more difficult due to scale/latency/etc demands.
__float··on Go team adding a Go language server to core
I don't think this adds anything currently -- but the comment this post links to is by a Sourcegraph engineer :)
__float··on Mics that record in 3D ambisonics are the next big thing
I am deaf in one ear, and I do frequently struggle to determine the direction of sound. For example, if you call my name in a room full of people, or hide my phone and make it ring, I have to rely on non-directional cues to figure it out. (In these cases, recognizing your voice and seeing your face, or walking around and using the volume changes to figure out how far away I am.)
__float··on Google Titan Security Key now available
I asked at DEF CON about these, but they said they were not the same as the Titan. Hardware looks to be the same, but they may not have the Titan firmware, but rather the original Feitian one. I...don't actually know how to verify that claim though.
__float··on UPS’s $20B Problem: Operations Stuck in the 20th Century
1.1.1.1 is giving SERVFAIL but 8.8.8.8 is handling it just fine.
__float··on Is K8s Too Complicated?
The linked tweet wasn't this blog post's author, and the tweet author uses she/her pronouns.

Gentle reminder that people of all genders are present in tech, and we should be mindful of potential exclusivity when assuming everyone is a man :)

__float··on Middle-Class Families Increasingly Look to Community Colleges
CLEP credit is not often accepted at "top tier" universities.
__float··on Only code at work? That doesn’t make you a worse programmer
Somewhat meta comment: there seems to recently be a huge uptick in the number of articles on this exact topic. What sparked this? Is it a reaction to something specific? Reacting to impostor syndrome, "if I don't code at home like everyone else, I must be useless!"?
__float··on Books I used to develop a game engine
One of the ways we count distinct elements in an unknown amount of data--probabilistically! You may have heard of Bloom filters and the like, and this is a similar family of algorithms.

__float··on A look inside Amazon’s Spheres as they get set to open
Err, I think OP just meant the computers were not the best, you might not get 2 monitors, or something like that. Not that you don't get a computer at all.
__float··on Lessons of an MIT Education

__float··on Sublime Text 3 now has font ligature support
Some people use monospace fonts with ligatures specific to common programming languages: https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode is one such example.
__float··on What do people mean when they say “transpiler”?
Can you explain why the "never" was even "wrong"? That seems totally fine to me, and I don't understand why you would think otherwise.
__float··on Transmit 5
I like JetBrains's licensing model for doing this. You get a perpetual fallback license after subscribing a certain length of time, or you can keep subscribing and get updates.
__float··on Future Pricing for Atlassian Cloud
I think it's quite a nice introductory deal to get JIRA and Confluence for $10/month total for 10 users, since they let you keep that price regardless the time you've been using it.

I don't think making a comparison to the price for 11 users at $7/user is really fair.

__float··on New Skype Update Is Horrible
Zoom has a web client these days that I find rather decent.
__float··on Django vs. Flask
Not OP, but as a Python developer with interests elsewhere, I'm very productive in modern C# with ASP.NET Core MVC. (And I can write it on a Mac and deploy on Linux, too!)
