__float··on The UX of UUIDs
This is why UUID v7 is better to start with.

The author also compares to Stripe tokens, which is a strange comparison as you can see they also have a time component towards the beginning.

__float··on The UX of UUIDs
Unless it's at the beginning of a word, like xylophone?
__float··on Code search is hard
SCIP is an evolution of LSIF, basically: https://sourcegraph.com/blog/announcing-scip
__float··on Rotz: Cross platform dotfile manager written in Rust
Are your per-machine branches mostly distinct, or do they share a lot?

I use https://github.com/thoughtbot/rcm and I find my dotfiles share _quite a bit_ in some respects (e.g. neovim config) but are drastically different in others (SSH config as one example) -- keeping things synced _across_ branches sounds very difficult. rcm handles this well, without branches, IMO.

__float··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
What is that helping, exactly? Most people have no idea what distinction that's drawing.

The Wikipedia article says an ETS event is imperceptible to humans. This was not imperceptible.

__float··on Timeline of the xz open source attack
Where are the email addresses visible? I've also seen this a few times, but never the actual addresses.
__float··on Helix: Release 24.03 Highlights
I didn't think Helix supported plugins, and I don't see any mention of it in the documentation. What language does it use?

(Edit: I see a bit of Scheme in the GitHub repo, but to call them "plugins" are a bit of a stretch; it seems limited to mostly-declarative syntax highlighting stuff.)

__float··on How Figma's databases team lived to tell the scale
They're also using sticker pricing, which as we know is likely far from what they actually paid.

(And the rest of the argument sounds a lot like our former employer with their...choice of document DB :) which I'll defend too!)

__float··on 1BRC merykitty's magic SWAR: 8 lines of code explained in 3k words
That was some key context lost in the simplification of the original code[1] for this blog post, though. The blog post's code returns the temperature (throwing away the next line), whereas the original adds it to a map and returns the next line.

__float··on Show HN: React Geiger – performance profiling using sound
There's a small "settings" button to the left of the URL. Click it, and if it shows Sound already, enable it. Otherwise, click "Site settings" and enable it from that list.
__float··on You've just inherited a legacy C++ codebase, now what?
If you store the compiler version in source control, then you don't have this problem.
__float··on Thanks FedEx, this is why we keep getting phished
Do you have any examples? I'm largely out of the Microsoft ecosystem these days, aside from the occasional Xbox usage.
__float··on Nvidia is now more valuable than Amazon and Google
Intel makes desktop cards too
__float··on What it was like working for Gitlab
They could build more apartments.
__float··on Helios: A distribution of Illumos powering the Oxide Rack
We have historically had private institutions with impactful research labs. Are there any of those still kicking?
__float··on Systemd: Enable indefinite service restarts
Even for basic service running, complex dependencies are so much more manageable in systemd.

I'm glad systemd "won"; it's much more maintainable IMO than shell scripts written once and forgotten about (until they break).

__float··on Ask HN: Best offline LLM in case OpenAI goes rogue?
I think they're trying to "bootstrap" a sense of community by having fake engagement to start.

It looks like they're the mod of r/NSAboycott, r/fedshutdown, etc. which may explain the paranoia of "going rogue" a bit more.

__float··on Threads is blocking servers on the Fediverse. Here's how we unblocked ourselves.
It's an odd omission that the "feminist server" mentioned is actually a gathering place for TERFs, after they were banned from places like Reddit. If your community is problematic enough to be kicked off of Reddit, I can imagine your users/content may not be desirable to Meta/Threads' brand, either.
__float··on Mozilla sccache: ccache with cloud storage
Is this only a remote cache for Bazel, but it does not support the remote execution API at all? It's a little worrisome to trust all user outputs when you do not also control the execution of them. (In the "best" case this could mean caching non-reproducible ("works on my machine") build results, in the worst case this could be actively dangerous if a malicious user poisons the build cache.)
__float··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
This is neat!

It'd be nice if clicking the blurred background area on a Sheet closed the sheet like the x button does.

__float··on Rite Aid banned from using AI facial recognition for five years
Is that within the scope of the FTC? My naive assumption would be that it's not, and cities tend not to self-regulate on matters of any real importance.
__float··on Evaluating new software forges
> Rather than needing a complicated YAML file to run a CI system, it’s just cloning Git repos and running commands.

How do you define what repos you need and which commands are run? Ah, it is indeed also a YAML file: https://srht.site/automating-deployments

__float··on Mitchell reflects as he departs HashiCorp
What do you mean by this?
__float··on UniFi Express
Ah, I didn't realise (and perhaps you didn't either?) but you linked to the Canadian store, where it is CAD $172.
__float··on UniFi Express
This doesn't really seem comparable -- the big draw to the Express seems to be the WiFi built-in; at $149 for the Express vs $172 for the Gateway Lite + (at least) ~$100 for an AP, these are entirely different categories.
__float··on Stripe live dashboard
$0 authorizations are routinely skipped, though - the fees add up substantially because of card testing, some card networks don't support it (and instead you need $1 or similar), and it can be confusing for customers.
__float··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
> It is very much possible Tim also left Flutter because of her.

If not her, then likely someone she managed: https://twitter.com/timsneath/status/1727192477264974273

__float··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
It helps confirm they're actually employees, rather than someone just pretending to be one.
__float··on Google News is shutting down purchased magazine content, offering refunds
I don't get the strong impression that e-readers are really trying to compete here, though. It seems much more in the _tablet_ space, where colorful photos (and additional interactivity, sometimes) are much closer to the physical experience of a paper magazine.
__float··on I spent 3 years working on a coat hanger [video]
This is a very critical reply, and for what? Throwing "just not for me" at the end doesn't negate the 95% of the message that's unnecessarily harsh.
