_audakel··on Calls to Cancel SXSW Intensify as Facebook, Twitter Pull Out, 30K Sign Petition
Any and all payments made to SXSW are not refundable for any reason, including, without limitation, failure to use Credentials due to illness, acts of God, travel-related problems, acts of terrorism, loss of employment and/or duplicate purchases.

I wonder if they change their tune if enough people say they are coming from effected areas / experience symptoms.

_audakel··on The technology pushed into schools today is a threat to child development
Of they don't have to memorize random spellings it could free up mental resources for other things.

Regardless, why be stuck in the past with things like handwriting or spelling or cursive?

_audakel··on Humans Interbred with Four Extinct Hominin Species, Research Finds
So what your saying is the movie "Idiocracy" already happened??

(Plot- the smartest people stop reproducing, only lower rings of society have kids. An average guy wakes up hundreds of years in the future and is a genius)

Amen to that. My company does very large cyber security contracts for DoD and has a god awful home page. It's almost like a badge of honor to someone how bad it is.

"PERSPECTIVE. The wealthiest person I have spent time with makes about $400mm/year. i couldn't get my mind around that until I did this: OK--let's compare it with someone who makes $40,000/year. It is 10,000x more. Now let's look at prices the way he might. A new Lambo--$235,000 becaome $23.50. First class ticket internationally? $10,000 becomes $1. A full time executive level helper? $8,000/month becomes $0.80/month. A $10mm piece of art you love? $1000. Expensive, so you have to plan a bit. A suite at the best hotel in NYC $10,000/night is $1/night. A $50million home in the Hamptons? $5,000. There is literally nothing you can't buy except."
_audakel··on Tesla Faces U.S. Criminal Probe Over Musk Statements
Reminds me of the book "private empire" about ExxonMobil.

"Private Empire pulls back the curtain, tracking the corporation’s recent history and its central role on the world stage. The action spans the globe, moving from Moscow, to impoverished African capitals, Indonesia, and elsewhere in heart-stopping scenes that feature kidnapping cases, civil wars, and high-stakes struggles at the Kremlin."

Big cooperations could easily find a way to run a "blackops" negative PR campaign, on top of pulling strings in the SEC

Yayy. Elon fan boys unite!
_audakel··on What Companies Mean by Culture Fit
> Obviously, screening for specific personality traits has not kept Bridgewater or Stripe from succeeding. Uber, however, might be a different story. I am going to argue that personality trait screening may have harmed Uber.

I agree there has been turmoil that has been detrimental to uber. But maybe the fact they specifically looked for hard core, "won't take no for an answer" is the reason they reached massive market / valuation they did. Lyft choose the "friendly" route and didn't get anything close to Uber size/valuation.

I'm not saying this is the best strategy/ always works, but you are saying you consider stripe successful basically because they have not had turmoil/bad press, despite the fact they are a fraction of the value of Uber.

Tldr: you probably NEED aggressive, won't take no, type of ppl to grow to a Uber size as quickly as they did.

Thanks for the recommendation, I just got it on Audible and I'm looking forward to listening to it.
_audakel··on Two Vortex Rings Colliding in Slow Motion [video]
wow there was a beautiful video. I like at the beginning how he explains how difficult it was to actually create this experiment, so I could understand how important this actually was. Also that it hasn't been done in like 40 years or whatever.

_audakel··on Show HN: Hacker Daily, a daily podcast for Hacker News readers
Reddit world news has a bot that does like a 5-7 sentence summary of articles. Would be cool if you could run that on the articles and read it. Nice to hear a human voice.
_audakel··on My Sony "smart" TV has updated itself and tried to force me to use a new app
> run it on a different network than your NAS and other computers. And that all other devices best require passwords to connect to them. Ideally you run a TV on a different VLAN.

Very important. I used to have no password on any of my internal network devices, then changed to all the same pw. I need to put them all different, because threats seem more likely to come from internal "trusted" sources that we bring in

_audakel··on Cambridge Analytica Files ‘I created Steve Bannon’s psychological warfare tool’
I was wondering how Breitbart and Trump did so well. It makes sense now that it was not luck, but they had access to new "tech" in away. Fake news for them is kinda like how Obama was the first to used Twitter and other SM platforms to get connect with voters and get elected.

Reminds me of the quote ~ "it's artificial intelligence until you understand how it works. Then it's just algorithms"

_audakel··on Microsoft Offers Bug Bounty to Prevent Another Spectre-Meltdown Fiasco

_audakel··on My Father, in Four Visits Over Thirty Years
I love that, money is everything until you have the bare minimum.

I just graduated and moved across country for a new job and for the past few years have been incredibly worried about money constantly. I worried that the rest of my life I would be completely obsessed about having enough money. Now that I'm starting to get some paychecks the sense of relief of not having to worry if I'm going to go hungry/not make rent etc is incredible

_audakel··on On the Women’s Petition Against Coffee of 1674
Imagine a space where you can bet on bear fights, warm your legs by the fire, witness public dissections (human and animal), solicit prostitutes (male and female), buy and sell stocks, purchase tulips or pornographic pamphlets, observe the activities of spies, dissidents, merchants, and swindlers, and then read your mail, delivered directly to your table. The thread tying it all together is a new drug from the Muslim world—black, odiferous, frightening, bewitching—called “coffee.”
_audakel··on New York Has a Great Subway, If You’re Not in a Wheelchair
You could have "service stations" where people who want to do service aka do good could go. Wheel chair people could wait there for someone who was going to ride the subway anyway to walk past and, wanting to do good in the world, help the disabled person get on.
_audakel··on Programming won’t be automated, or it already has been
>To completely remove programmers from the equation would require essentially a human level artificial intelligence. And if I start seeing near sentient robots walking around, my first thought is certainly not going to be, “oh no, it’s going to take my job!”

Even with all DeepMind can do we still are very far from anything remotely human intelligence. On the extreme low end, the tiny worm C. Elegans has only 302 neurons in its nervous system. The full circuit has been completely mapped out for over a decade, and still no one knows how it works. Bits and pieces are understood, but that is all.

The fruit fly has a meager 100,000 neurons in its nervous system

_audakel··on Two major US technology firms 'tricked out of $100M'
The best quality content I find is almost always someones personal, non commercial writeup. often times this is something as simple as the comment section of a article, or their own blog.

They put no ads and do it because they care about the subject and care about their reputation so they make sure its not spamy.

I have alwasy hoped for a micropayment system I could use to reward this behavior.

_audakel··on Two major US technology firms 'tricked out of $100M'
Not sure I follow.

You are saying taxi drivers are "quality content", and Uber is low quality service/spamy. Pretty sure its the other way around.

(If you are looking only at the culture however they may actually both be closer together....)

_audakel··on Trolling the Entire Internet

_audakel··on Vibrator Maker to Pay Millions Over Claims It Secretly Tracked Use
This is a cool idea. Having an independent rating company look at products and score them on privacy or security. May be hard to find back doors tho.
_audakel··on The Uber Bombshell About to Drop
i can't believe someone as smart as he is would just blatantly stick in a usb. With how much money he was going to make he could have researched some more annomous ways to get it. Not the least would be to intercept a team members auth/pw and use that to access the data.
