_emacsomancer_··on Ghostty 1.4
libghostty is brilliant and I'm very glad it exists. ghostel in Emacs is completely brilliant and so fast compared to anything else, a wonderful project fascinated by libghostty. another i might mention is zmx [ https://zmx.sh/ ] - process persister (detach, attach) with panes, tabs, hijacking the terminal. i always end up using tmux just for persistence and then am frustrated I can't remember how to copy etc. zmx has more features than some things of a similar nature and my understanding is that it's able to be taking advantage of libghostty things.

(a couple of us working on packaging libghostty and ghostty proper to for Guix at the moment )

GrapheneOS is working with a manufacturer to change this:[0]

> We're working with a major OEM and the devices will be the future versions of existing models they have now. The devices will be priced similarly to Pixels. The initial devices will have a flagship Snapdragon SoC for the best security and support time. Snapdragon flagships have significantly better CPU and GPU performance than Pixels. Snapdragon provides high quality Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS and cellular support as part of the SoC. eSIM and other functionality is also provided by the SoC. Snapdragon has decent image processing functionality included too, and good neural network acceleration.

Of course, SteamOS is an immutable Arch spin, so it's not as if this isn't an idea that's been had before, but Arch is indeed on the surface sort of a weird distro to implement as immutable.

(Not having much Spanish, I at first thought "Odin's disco(teque)" and then "no, that doesn't make sense about sides", but then, surely primed by English "disco", thought "it must mean Odin's record/lp/album".)

I'd suggest KOReader, on various devices, as the best renderer and interface.

_emacsomancer_··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
> ....It's not some moral axiom that demands action to shut down problematic speech whenever it happens.

No, that would probably end up in a logical paradox, if one were intolerant of any degree of intolerance.

> It's a concept that has varied views on to what extent should tolerance of intolerance be extended and to what response is appropriate when it extends beyonds that threshold.

I don't know enough to have a particular position on the ACLU, but at least in theory an organisation defending free speech might decide that conditions have become such that defending certain things will lead to the inability to defend other things and choose to proceed differently on that basis.

TeX puts more space after periods/fullstops (which is why you're supposed to do special markup or other measures to mark '.' in the middle of sentences which aren't sentence-enders (e.g. like e.g.)). But it's generally smaller than the equivalent of two manual spaces.

(A nice thing in (La)TeX is that one could follow the "two spaces after a full-stop" rule, which then has the advantage of being an explicit marking for sentence boundaries (which your editor might be able to navigate; Emacs has a convention of assuming two spaces after a sentence-ending '.'), but then the TeX typesetting will take care of making it look right. I lost the habit of actually doing this, for better or worse, except when flycheck/checkdoc/package-linter.el makes me do it for docstrings.)

_emacsomancer_··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
Yeah, I think KOReader started out for Kindle first, and then added Kobo (and then other things - works on Android for one, and KOReader is typically what I use if I'm reading on my phone too). I just went with Kobos from the start because it seemed like there were fewer problems with Kobos w.r.t. getting locked in/out of things than with Kindles, though Kobos are harder to get hold of (outside of Canada, I suppose) than Kindles.
_emacsomancer_··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
I qualified the air-quoted "great" in the subsequent text, which was really intended to be the main point.

(And high price and high quality may sometimes correlate, but high quality is obviously not definitionally high cost (nor vice-versa).)

_emacsomancer_··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
What people aren't generally used to doing is installing OSes. Any OS. Using OSes... Windows 11 is far more complicated, finicky than plenty of Linux installs. (People get caught up in the "you're not holding it right" for Windows/Mac issues.)
_emacsomancer_··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
It happens that lots of people who use Linux like to mess around with things, and, from a certain perspective, that's a waste of time. (But can be enjoyable.)

But it's perfectly possible to just use Linux and not muck around. Or, at least, to spend less time unwillingly mucking around than one would elsewhere.

(E.g., EndeavourOS, which is, perhaps unexpectedly/ironically, more or less just Arch with a nice installer and a welcome screen, is one of the easiest OSes to deal with. [Maybe not completely unexpectedly, SteamOS is also a customised Arch.] It's not the exciting distro, or the one I'm most likely to talk a lot about; but see the first point.)

Don't recommend Apple if you know better. Not everybody does know better.

You can just say that you don't have enough time or spoons to do free tech support.

An answer with a catch:

I ran rooted android phones for a long time, but have for the past few years been on GrapheneOS, which doesn't require Google Play, but allows you to use it while sandboxing it (so, harm reduction), and it's much less of a struggle now than it used to be.

The catch is that, at least currently, GrapheneOS only works on (Google) Pixel phones.

[On Kobos:— I agree on Kobo vs Kindle, and like Kobos a lot: but partially because I don't actually have to use Kobo's software if I don't want to. (See KOReader[0] and NickelMenu[1].)

Microsoft couldn't compete themselves out of a wet paper bag (it may be a slightly different script, but they're anti-competitivists just like Apple).

Apple technology is "great" as long as you you're rich enough to afford it, and buy into the whole ecosystem. And, most crucially: contort yourself yourself enough. (="If it's not working for you, you're not holding it right.")

_emacsomancer_··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
Or also just have a corporation with enough technical knowledge themselves to work out security.... I suppose they figure it's not in their business interests though.
_emacsomancer_··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
People who don't read Hacker News occasionally want nice things too, and don't necessarily deserve corporations infantalising them.
