_joel··on Root shell on Samsung TV
People still bought TV's when they were comparatively more expensive (hell we rented them here in the UK). I don't buy this line that "oh if you want a cheap TV...". No, it's an underhand tactic to try and justify adtech's creepy outreach.
_joel··on OBS Studio 33
Are you sure that's not time machine stomping all over it? You system might be snapshotting and having trouble at low disk space. Or if you're swapping a lot, then that could also be a reason?
_joel··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
Yes, utility privatisation in the UK has been terrible for the consumer (and environment) too.
_joel··on Does Ruby on Rails still make sense?
It's Rails, currently at version 8. I don't think it's going anywhere soon.
_joel··on Does Ruby on Rails still make sense?
Err yes, of course it does.
_joel··on I built a drone with only one motor [video]
The next iteration is the drones removing those pesky humans from the command chain too :/
_joel··on I built a drone with only one motor [video]

_joel··on So, You’d Like To Sell Your Print Issues Of The Onion?
They could have just lost them too, doesn't need to be nefarious.
_joel··on The RAM shortage is bringing back DDR4
Heh well, forget DDR4, DDR3 rides again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4c2FSSaCsw
_joel··on How I reverse engineered a commercial spatial audio effect
Yes, it's called impulse response, used to capture convolutional reverbs, to model "real" sound stages like a large hall or what have you
_joel··on Docker Agent
We're all typing in the same prompts
_joel··on PS5 Jailbreaks Are Escalating at an Unprecedented Pace
Oh, just like CSS did for DVD, lol.
_joel··on 'Jonathan' is the oldest land animal on Earth
A greenland shark, just with lots of water on top of the land too.
_joel··on PS5 Jailbreaks Are Escalating at an Unprecedented Pace
You also don't get Sony deciding to remove your access to already paid content. Bit difficult form them to physically come and steal it from your house, than change a row in a db.
_joel··on Show HN: A walkable 3D art history museum built from Wikipedia
Easily done if you leverage https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/stories/operation-night-watch/... - sure there are loads more museums that offer such a service now too.
_joel··on PS5 Jailbreaks Are Escalating at an Unprecedented Pace
Don't poke the bear then by trying to change the definition of ownership and making games download only.
_joel··on A font recreated from photographs of classic Commodore 64 keycaps
The readme is just a text file, the files are there, it doesn't take a genius to find them.

"How do I download the TTF". Well, use your brain.

_joel··on Nicholas Polson has authored 258 academic papers in 2026 so far
Polson - NoSlop

_joel··on Claude partial outage
Hey, it's 99.9 if you look at it upside down.
_joel··on ESP32S3 cluster running 1.58-bit (BitNet) Language model
How many rollingupdate pods does it take to change a lightbulb?
_joel··on Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests
Oh nice, not aware of this. We're opentofu on GCP, so could be a good addition to ci
_joel··on Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake
Ironically back around 2007 we had to use RHEL to get DRBD setup for the Redhat HA / Pacemaker things
_joel··on Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake
Quite possibly! It was always a pleasure to see the ATLAS jobs running in a process list on an OpenStack hypervisor. We supported Lancaster University for compute (amongst others!).
_joel··on Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake
Yea, long time user of both here (I even supported ATLAS workloads running on our public UK cloud). Debian long-term is the right choice
_joel··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
That's by design.
_joel··on Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake
Well they could have used Debian from the start. I get why, but it's such a strange argument, the way it's posited.
_joel··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
A quick reference shouldn't require me to have to check the quick reference for hallucinations.
