_mgr··on The Case for Lowering Your Expectations
“Happiness means nothing to me. I just want to have meaning and purpose.” - Jon Krakauer
_mgr··on Ask HN: How do you organize data on your disk?
I started cleaning my act up after finding "shit to sort" inside a "shit to sort" folder, which was nested under another "shit to sort" folder. I remember also seeing another "shit to sort ACTUALLY THIS TIME!!!" folder within there somewhere.

_mgr··on Why Can't We Build a Splash-Proof Toilet?
"It’s why lounges play slow music that influences people to linger and buy more drinks, why experts don’t recommend open office plans, and why elevator music developed as a way to make standing in a tiny, moving room seem more natural. Yet in restrooms, we’re left in silence to listen to each other’s bowel movements."

Sound is the least of the horrors I've experienced in the restrooms at places I've worked. People can be shockingly disgusting. Knowing you work with people that have no understanding of how to shit properly has you seriously questioning their ability to handle the complex tasks required of their employment.

_mgr··on Ask HN: Best books you've read in 2015
I have 3 x Audible credits. Can anyone recommend anything that maybe better as an audio book?

_mgr··on Coliving: Dorms for Grownups
33 and I still "flat" with other people. I've lived with same couple for over 5 years now in two seperate places. We've stayed together as it were as we get on and can manage our lives without annoying each other. The only reason to do it, it halves the cost of everything i.e rent, power, water and internet.

If I had't been so stupid with my finances in my twenties I might be in a different place but I would be wasting money without knowing it.

I've been lucky with the flatmates I have now. I've had some average ones before and I'm not sure If I will do it for much longer but it has it's upsides.

_mgr··on Ask HN: Anyone else seeing Google Apps. install themselves?
In my instance it seemed to just be a LaunchPad link added to 'Users\[my user]\Applications\'.

Easy enough to remove but still worrying that Google thinks this is okay behaviour.

_mgr··on In 5 Minutes, He Lets the Blind See
http://www.hollows.org.nz

The Fred Hollows Foundation has been doing this since at least 1992 around the world including Nepal where Dr. Hollows and Dr. Ruit worked closely together.

Unfortunately Dr. Hollows passed away years ago but the foundation continues his work.

_mgr··on Ask HN: Accounting for Self-Employed/Contractors
How is what different?
_mgr··on Ask HN: I can't get a job and it is bringing me down, what is going on here?
Next best thing then. Work for a New Zealand company, but in the US.

https://www.xero.com/nz/about/careers/

Scroll down and you will see job listings and a whole section for the United States. Looks like there are even positions in New York.

_mgr··on Ask HN: I can't get a job and it is bringing me down, what is going on here?
Leave. Come to New Zealand.

We love the Irish, you'll fit right in and we have an abundance of Dev. jobs.

I was discussing this with my partner last night trying to understand the pattern/logic behind it. Would you see this similar pattern when counting oranges or coffee cups?
_mgr··on Ask HN: Best Small Company (~25-50 Users) Router Setup?
What's the area of the office and what barriers exist between employees? Concrete or internal metal/plaster walls? Other offices / businesses near by where the employees pick up the SSID's with full or near full strength?

I've found older Apple Airport Extreme's work really well and are easy to setup and manage. I can't personally comment on the current version.

_mgr··on In defense of PowerShell
Yes it would be as the OP's question was about changing the binding. My bad.
_mgr··on In defense of PowerShell
That example you gave is from 2008. You would use the current PowerShell Cmdlets provided for managing IIS.

IIS:\>New-WebBinding -Name "Default Web Site" -IPAddress "*" -Port 80 -HostHeader TestSite
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee790599.aspx
_mgr··on In defense of PowerShell
"I think many of the misconceptions I see on HN about PowerShell (and much of the Windows hate in general, actually) are because the typical use case on HN is quite a bit different than that of an internal IT department of a non-tech company, which is more Microsoft’s focus."

This, and vice versa that you see in other online communities. Debating your religious position is almost becoming safer than stating your technology choices, which like religion are quite often not your choices to start with.

_mgr··on Porsche 911: 52 years of staying true to its roots
Internal combustion engines are never fashionable or trendy?
_mgr··on Porsche 911: 52 years of staying true to its roots
In my opinion I think it's generally the hipster crowd latching on to a new cool. It happens to every sub-culture. Obviously there is a limit to the supply of old things but I think you will find that once the new shiny cool of vintage old stuff dissipates the crowd move on and guys like Magnus are still there decades later doing their thing.

The custom motorcycle scene is a good example of this. So much new stuff flooded the market and everyone, including the new guys got bored. The shift to the old vintage and "garage" built stuff became the new hotness and now the old guard are having to pay stupidly high prices for half a cracked case and two burnt out pistons.

New comers with money buy up everything. Eventually though, either they don't have a clue what they are doing and/or give up soon after and just store the shit with the other failed quarter/mid life crisis dreams.

Like you though, it might be sour grapes.

_mgr··on A Western Kid Living in Communist Poland (2014)
I've read this before. Has this already been posted to HN?

I am trying to convince my native born Polish girlfriend to move back for a year to live/work/travel. I figure I will pick up the language far quicker than my current pace.

She's a little apprehensive about our earning potential there. The Polish Zloty does not appear to be the strongest currency and the average wage is half of some of it's other EU cousins.

_mgr··on How I (and you?) am hurting the PC industry
I am of the opinion that the inability to upgrade newer MacBooks is the result of Apple chasing the slimmest, lightest and minimalist laptop it can. It's customers having to buy a new model every year or two is however a nice side effect.

_mgr··on Ask HN: I will help your startup in exchange for food and a place to stay
Having recently left my last position as a Senior Systems Admin. I'm now in the process of making a shift in IT career paths to a developer of some sort of description.

OP, you really should consider making your way here to NZ.

_mgr··on Ask HN: I will help your startup in exchange for food and a place to stay
Likely anytime he needs to catch a bus or a train. Or wishes to have a discussion about something other than Auckland housing prices, Rugby, or Reality TV.
_mgr··on Gizmodo on Rob Rhinehart and Soylent
I came to the conclusion that Rob Rhinehart's musings were mostly satire. Could I be giving him to much credit?

I do however strongly agree with this though "he’s marketing a pseudoscientific bullshit product, Soylent".
