_pmf_··on Fq: Jq for Binary Formats
I'd also like to throw https://github.com/WerWolv/ImHex in the mix here.
_pmf_··on Do McKinsey and other consultants do anything useful?
Responsibility sink.
_pmf_··on Tech bubbles are bursting all over the place
> tesla does not need to advertise

What do you think Elon's shenanigans are exactly?

_pmf_··on NotepadNext: A cross-platform reimplementation of Notepad++
> 2x memory looks like a naive implementation of just allocating an std::string from heap for each line. Due to heap fragmentation and various overhead it would quickly blow up.

Looks more line Qt's internal UTF-16 encoding in this case.

_pmf_··on Sweden sends just 1% of its trash to landfills
"Recycling" means "the landfill is on the other half of the globe".
_pmf_··on Gas pumps happen to be about as insecure as your typical router
> Barcode scanners are hilariously bad

Aren't they just USB HID (previously: serial) devices that literally just output key codes for the numbers detected?

_pmf_··on How I learned to stop worrying and structure all writing as a list
In the Challenger case, the bad information has been deliberately hidden within the structure. They could just as well have pulled it up in the structure.

It's like saying variable font sizes are inherently bad because due to them, contracts can have small print sections.

_pmf_··on Buffet – An All-inclusive Buffer for C
A small set standardized data structures (vectors, maps) would do so much good for C.
_pmf_··on What made World of Warcraft's environments so compelling?
For me, The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption had the most compelling environments. I spent probably half of my play time just walking-riding around.
_pmf_··on Case against OOP is understated, not overstated (2020)
> it's a book filled with solutions to imaginary problems.

Have you even read it? I'd say it has more deep real world examples than almost any other SW engineering book I've read.

_pmf_··on DarkPattern.games: Find Healthy Mobile Games
Obligatory plug for Simon Tatham's (the author of Putty) puzzle application.
_pmf_··on Show HN: A daily math puzzle inspired by Wordle
Love it!
_pmf_··on If Looks Could Kill
Trade shows are a particular kind of crazy.
_pmf_··on Web3 and crypto skepticism is growing and people are finally starting to listen
> Nobody is forcing anyone to partake in this new technology.

Like I wasn't forced to participate in the resolution and the fallout of the housing crash?

_pmf_··on I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone
> For a while I felt guilty, like I was ripping the law-firm off

Laughed out loud at this.

_pmf_··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
620M is too much for a password manager, so we can safely assume it is no longer one.
_pmf_··on I think I know why you can't hire engineers right now
You could get hundreds of thousands of European developers (West as well as East Europe) by offering 80000 EUR comp and a reliable contract.
_pmf_··on Goldman Sachs invests $250M in compressed air energy storage
The Amish use compressed air: http://www.amishfamilyvalues.com/amish/amish-electricity/
_pmf_··on New‐onset autoimmune phenomena post‐Covid‐19 vaccination
> Anyone that's worried about autoimmune phenomena after vaccination should look at autoimmune phenomena post Covid infection

Hard to ignore, what with this being shoved down my throat 24/7 for 1.5 years.

_pmf_··on Three ways of handling user input
Using Statecharts or FRP is completely orthogonal to the choice of polling vs. event driven.
_pmf_··on How to Think: The Skill You’ve Never Been Taught
Sophistry and rhetoric are not "thinking". They are intellectual sleight of hands.
_pmf_··on Ligatures in programming fonts: hell no (2019)
I hope you use the standard Windows OS.
_pmf_··on Toddlers are harsh judges of moral character
> and only add nuance later

When would that be?

_pmf_··on New EU data blockage as German court would ban many cookie management providers
> These core values won't change.

The Abmahnwesen never dies.

_pmf_··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
Install it on a spare laptop.
_pmf_··on Omicron variant more resistant to vaccine but causes less severe Covid: study
> Betting your life it's mild is dumb.

But keeping the panic dialed up to 11 for two years is very healthy.

Signed, someone who probably now has a cardiac neurosis.

_pmf_··on Vivaldi: Violating CoC on forum may close your email account
A support forum for a commercial product is not a "community".
_pmf_··on SARS-CoV-2 infects human adipose tissue and elicits an inflammatory response
> Um. Is high hazard and death ratio for obese people something that needed explaining?

Some people might argue that convincing people to not get fat is much lower hanging fruit than transforming every democracy into an authoritarian apartheid state for effects that are well below any statistical significance threshold.

_pmf_··on Advent of Code 2021
> Not sure if this is indicative of other years

It is.

_pmf_··on JEdit – Programmer's Text Editor
There was a time when a Swing application felt heavyweight, but today, it feels extremely lightweight (including JVM startup).

(Not IntelliJ, which is horrible in every regard.)
