_rtff··on Polymarket 1h halt after vendor compromise; affected users will be 'made whole'
It boggles my mind that more companies don't understand this. A happy customer is a long term customer is a profitable customer. Pissing off your customers by treating them badly just ensures you get less or zero additional money out of them. You'd think that'd be Business 101, but idiots run the world by smashing and grabbing their quick paychecks and dashing out the door before their bad decisions catch up to them.

_rtff··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
"Temporary" is a few months. We're looking at many multiple years before parts even _begin_ to decline in price, if even. How much will we as consumers lose in the time it takes for this to correct? This is not "temporary", this is a decimation of an entire product sector for the foreseeable future. There is no historical precedent for this. Companies are not and will not slow down gobbling up literally every tech part they can. Every year, training and running AI will demand more resources over and over and we will continue to be charged increasing amounts for everything because everything costs more either directly or upstream of us. It is a literal cancer.
_rtff··on Ask HN: Do you want a router that has DD-WRT pre-installed?
Running ethernet over the whole home is an expensive job, may not even be realistic depending on the home's construction, and definitely isn't possible if you're renting. It's not perfect and not as good as ethernet for sure, but it's better than using a single router.
_rtff··on Ask HN: Do you want a router that has DD-WRT pre-installed?
What I really want and haven't seen is a proper mesh router setup that runs DD-WRT or something open-source. In bigger homes really a mesh system is your best hope since your internet access usually comes in on a corner somewhere, but I really don't trust any of the options I have (with the possible exception of one, whose name escapes me at the moment).
_rtff··on Fingerprints are the new cookies
I dunno man, from an outsider's perspective I used to think that but it seems to slowly be getting worse with trying to shove through internet surveillance and corporate protectionism under the guise of "protect the kids". I guess sadly someone saw how unreasonably effective that can be in the US.
_rtff··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
Ah yes, like my RAM, SSDs, and GPUs are trickling down right now? You're absolutely right! I love a trickle of PC parts!
_rtff··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
Ah yes, the famous "trickle down" theory, which you may know from its smash hit "trickle down economics"! Surely this time it'll be different, right?
_rtff··on I would like the value of my home to rise, while my property taxes fall
You're not wrong, but that's an entirely different discussion from whether or not someone should be forced out of their house simply because gentrification and inflation causes their taxes to go up year after year likely long after they're done working. Oftentimes people buy homes in low-cost areas because that's what they can afford. It's not their fault when the area gentrifies and their taxes skyrocket past their means through no fault of their own. We can advocate both for homes to be more affordable for people that need one and for people to not lose their homes due to constantly rising taxes.
_rtff··on I would like the value of my home to rise, while my property taxes fall
It's classic neoliberalism think which for some reason the tech crowd is unreasonably susceptible to. "Oh you're poor? Can't afford your bills? Must be your fault." It's utterly disgusting.
_rtff··on Account bans on Reddit
Yep. That all sounds about right. Reddit is for bot slop, astroturfing, and basement-dwelling troglodytes just itching to exercise the tiniest amount of power over other anonymous people on the internet. It's a very stupid place.
_rtff··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
No? Per someone else's comment, presumably they're using vast.ai which does indeed list the 6000 for $1/hr
_rtff··on AI can clone your indie game, but not its soul
Strongly disagree, they're utterly repulsive. Unfortunately they're getting harder to distinguish from the real thing.
_rtff··on Scientists solve 1840s space weather mystery
Reddit is a dumpster fire. You're better off without that site anyways.
_rtff··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
Yes, but the point being "trusted". If the community decides a particular admin/group/server is unjustly handing out bans, then they could unsubscribe from that list.
_rtff··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
If this is really distributed, then off the top of my head I imagine you could possibly make some sort of reputation-based filter list wherein trusted admins can subscrbe to each other's filter lists such that when one admin blocks are user, it quickly propagates to other admins' lists. Somewhat similar to how email domain spam block lists work.
_rtff··on Making Tailscale Faster
No, Tailscale specifically excludes some Android apps and crucially prevents you from removing this exclusion: https://tailscale.com/docs/features/client/android-app-split...

_rtff··on Making Tailscale Faster
Hey why do you hard code certain android apps to be excluded from Tailscale with split tunneling without giving users any way to disable split tunneling for these apps? It doesn't matter how you think VPN does or does not affect these apps, it's really awful anti-user behavior.
_rtff··on North Korean Hackers Posed as Recruiters. They Infected 30k Devices Worldwide
One of the many reasons I refuse to even speak to recruiters anymore.
_rtff··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Every time AI is used it is a theft from artists, programmers, writers, and all creative workers whose work was used to train it without permission or compensation and are now unable to find work or buyers. It is absolutely theft and you're being intentionally disingenuous to suggest otherwise.
_rtff··on Maintainer rejected AI contributions, we forked it and added video acceleration
Yeah that's not really a brag...
_rtff··on Reddit Is Still Useful. It's Also Becoming Impossible
Did the IPO invitations ever actually happen? I did receive an email about it but then it was nothing but crickets, so I assumed it was their attempt to somehow fleece their users with "oh we triiiied to care about our users, it's not our fauuuuult, we're soooorry".
_rtff··on Let's make quality the norm again
Yes, this is quite common and is usually referred to as "it's expensive to be poor". That said, unfortunately these days it's very difficult to know which brands are still actually quality anymore and which are the ones still coasting on previous good engineering reputation while currently shipping substandard crap to make an extra buck for the bean counters in charge before the ship sinks.
_rtff··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
Yeah, the teleporting was an exceedingly annoying and un-fun mechanic. In games, players don't like when something happens without warning and are unable to react to it. This is why we have telegraphing. Dev, if you want to keep the mechanic, give it a charge up time and an indicator of the impending direction of a warp. Otherwise, funny idea for a game.
_rtff··on Built a Lego minifigure configurator. Shuffle until something makes you laugh
Using browser history is a pretty bad way to handle changing the figurine. I don't want to use the back button a dozen times to exit the exact same page I've been on the whole time.
_rtff··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
Wow, screw me for actually being honest, I guess. I'll remember to sound more authoritative next time so no one questions my statements rather than trying to honestly invite others to share additional clarifying information. Thanks! You're totally correct!

(Was that enough of an ego stroking for you? I can praise you more, if you'd like.)

_rtff··on Feeling Sad about AI
> Once you come to terms with the idea that translating an exact specification into decent code isn't a unique skill any more, you can start looking at the larger set of problems that you face as a software engineer and realize that there is so much left, and your existing skill and experience mean you can master these new tools, provide value, and execute at a level far greater than anyone who is just getting started building software using agents without any of your depth.

People keep saying this, but I'm really not seeing it to be true. At least not in any employable capacity. All anyone seems to want now is an AI babysitter that can poke and prod it to puke out as much code as possible. There is no desire left for human competency, ingenuity, or creativity in this space.

You could claim the same about art, but you see time and again and again that businesses, big and small, would rather shit out AI art for any of their art needs rather than hire an artist. And that's way more visible and obvious.

I'm honestly starting to think these AI glazing "everything is actually totally fine, guys" comments are an astroturfing campaign.

_rtff··on How Trail of Bits helps verify the integrity of Signal chats
It is possible to intercept text messages and phone calls in such a way that the recipient never even knows a text message or phone call was sent to them in the first place. SMS is an extremely insecure channel for handling authentication codes.
