_xiaz··on Ambulance hits cyclist, rushes him to hospital, then sticks him with $1,800 bill
yep
_xiaz··on Ambulance hits cyclist, rushes him to hospital, then sticks him with $1,800 bill
Not just lanes! We have entire routes exclusive to bicycles and use bicycle lanes only as a fallback where there are none
_xiaz··on Ambulance hits cyclist, rushes him to hospital, then sticks him with $1,800 bill
Except with bicycles you very well can find a plane to jump out with no ground to be seen.

Your analogy is car brained and bad.

I live in germany and have an extremely safe bike commute.

I would not commute by bike in the US tho

_xiaz··on Five minutes of exercise a day could lower blood pressure
Thats why we recommend obese people to walk first, even if they think they would enjoy running.
_xiaz··on Mozilla Foundation lays off 30% staff, drops advocacy division
I'd say the electronic frontier foundation is the best candidate. They have been exclusively doing advocacy since forever
_xiaz··on Nutrient levels in retail grocery stores
hundrets is a bit bold unless you include phytonutrients and subtypes per mineral.

twenty to thirty would be exhaustive.

5 minerals and 5 vitamins would be a good start

_xiaz··on Nutrient levels in retail grocery stores
what if the plant is long dead?
_xiaz··on Nutrient levels in retail grocery stores
Not really.

You could create several cohort with different co-controlled fixes for each: more calories, more protein, more fiber, more nutrients.

Then evaluate the percentage of successfully treated patients in each cohort.

It's of course a difficult study, since someone with a bad diet will lack practically everything, so more things will work than not. I'd also be curious to see how you would design a real food diet high in micronutrients without accidentally adding a bunch of fiber in the process

_xiaz··on Project Euler #912: Where are the Odds?
Imo DS/Algs to an extent are a good prerequisite. Once you know them in one language that knowledge is portable enough to get you up-to-speed in $lang. Then, and no earlier will I start worrying about doing real things in my programs and the "idiosyncracies"
_xiaz··on Project Euler #912: Where are the Odds?
Most of these wouldn't qualify as "puzzles", would they?

I find it nice to learn new languages via data structure puzzles, because to me the data structures of a language feel like the grammar and once I have that down everything else falls into place

_xiaz··on The TikTok documents: Stripping teens and boosting 'attractive' people
And I'd rather have a child escape to the interwebs than needing to bear the suffering of a less-than-average childhood bluntly
_xiaz··on Why Gov.uk's Exit this Page component doesn't use the Escape key
Bad internet habit, just asssume that "you" refers to the hypothetical person made of nothing but that one expressed opinion
_xiaz··on Your brain changes based on what you did two weeks ago
Additionally I am bothered by the insistence of these outlets to forego connecting the brain and the mind, as well as hormones and feelings.

Like cortisol and dopamine or whatever are just chemical representations of feelings, are they not? And large areas of the brain are just a physical representation of the mind, right?

It's like they pretend the brain is just some other organ, like our liver or kneecap, and not the irreducable self.

Maybe that's relatable too

_xiaz··on Nearly all of the Google images results for "baby peacock" are AI generated
This is the root cause. "AI and Bots" are just two of the many symptoms
_xiaz··on Vulnerabilities in the Feeld dating app
I should add this works best if you hire with some diversity, such as one Junior with a preference for security topics.

If you go up to the counter and yell "10 React devs please", don't be surprised

_xiaz··on Vulnerabilities in the Feeld dating app
Also no review or planning anywhere in that process.

I'm semi-confident that if a Junior were to talk to another Junior before starting about things to look out for, and then the code was reviewed by say a third Junior, they would not have this bug.

Call me naive, but I don't think Juniors are as oblivious as they are made out to be

_xiaz··on Nobody Cares About Security
It's about the same level of solved as moon landings and supersonic flight...

If we could now find out how to do security in an economical, non-annoying way, that would be great

_xiaz··on Nobody Cares About Security
This is a bit of a stretch, but I'm willing to entertain the idea if you could toss me a link or two to more in-depth write ups on the topic
_xiaz··on Reclaim the Stack

Damn, that's the dream right there

_xiaz··on The Fennel Programming Language
Great website
_xiaz··on Why Don't Tech Companies Pay Their Engineers to Stay?
While the conclusion that engineers leave because they aren't paid enough does hold some truth, I'm much more compelled to cite the old "People quit managers, not jobs" saying.
_xiaz··on Clojure 1.12.0 is now available
> But I hope it doesn't end up like a hairball a few releases down from increase of pace or something.

Rich Hickey and the rest of the Clojure Team are very careful designers. I wouldn't worry too much

_xiaz··on Clojure 1.12.0 is now available
I'll second this. Many people are happily complacent with mainstream languages. A minority ventures out in $lang of the day for the fun of it, with functional languages being an even smaller minority.

At a minimum, build some strong clojure skills first, such that when you introduce it to anyone else, you can do so with confidence

_xiaz··on Clojure 1.12.0 is now available
left-right-thingy makes me chuckle every time I watch "Maybe Not"
_xiaz··on What's functional programming all about? (2017)
No, as in zero, (side) effects means no program for most domains.

For me, the essence of FP is the minimization of global state

_xiaz··on Why bother with argv[0]?

_xiaz··on The Art of Finishing
Then stay away from it if you can. GTD is great if you're a manager with a wive and kids and maybe a foundation to run on the side.

If you don't usually forget tasks/events or freeze up because of analysis paralysis, you can get by just fine without it.

GTD definitely brings an overhead that doesn't pay off in a reasonably simple life

_xiaz··on Greppability is an underrated code metric
I routinely spot 3-line prints with the string on its own line in our code. Even for cases where the string + print don't even reach the 80 character "limit"

_xiaz··on A post by Guido van Rossum removed for violating Python community guidelines
Because he founded ycombinator, he should be allowed at least a little more leniency.

Of course if he goes around directly and explicitly bashing all sorts of minorities or doxxes some other users or commits any other actual big nono, sure remove him.

This is not what happened. GvR was impolite at worst, and impolite your founder shall be allowed to be
