aabiji··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (June 2026)
I've been wanting to learn deep learning on a deeper level, so I've spent the past month going through Understanding Deep Learning. I've gotten to the chapter on CNNs and right now I'm just implementing a bunch of foundational ML papers (AlexNet, VGG, Word2Vec, etc).
aabiji··on Ask HN: How did you figure out what research field you were passionate about?
That is such a good way to frame things, never thought about it that way. Thanks!
aabiji··on Ask HN: What did you read in 2025?
The most interesting books I read this year were:

Acting class - I found this book surprisingly compelling. It made me reflect on my own search for connection and identity, and how easily it is to be misled and manipulated when you've got no one close.

Earthlings - The book's plot gets really horrific (don't let the cover fool you). However, it did make me think about social norms and taboos a little differently.

1984 - It was my first time reading the book, and man, looking around and seeing bits and pieces of the surveillance mentioned in the book in real life is kind of terrifying...

Grapes of Wrath - It's definitely the most heart-wrenching book I've ever read. Watching the Joad family get absolutely devastated by the monster that is unchecked capitalism is so sad :(

Skunk works - Really good book on the development of Lockheed's stealth planes. However, I did wish I got more technical details.

I would love to see some more book recommendations :)

For the past few months, I've been building a health tracking app called LogBuddy. I got tired of using separate apps for nutrition, workouts, weight, and period tracking. So I built LogBuddy to handle all of it with a dead simple interface. That way, all the heath data I'm tracking would be in one place. Right now there's an Android APK available. If there's interest, I'll publish to the Play Store and build an iOS version too.

Would love to hear your feedback if you try it out!

For the past 2 months I've building an app called LogBuddy. I've recently completed the MVP and it helps me track my weight, my workout sessions, my food intake, and my periods, all in one app. It's really basic on purpose. This app also gave me the opportunity to go all in on mobile dev with Ionic.

What do you mean?
aabiji··on Chickoban: A Sokoban Clone
Over the past couple of weeks I've built Chickoban, a puzzle game inspired by Sokoban.

You can play it on the web [here](https://aabiji.github.io/chickoban/).

It's in 3d and uses raylib. I know the game itself not very good, but I was hoping that maybe some of you would be kind enough to offer feedback on the code. What parts of the design or good, what parts are problematic, etc.

In any case, maybe the game will be interesting. It's all open source. Have a nice day.

aabiji··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
I'm working on a motion capture app. The idea is that I can map my movement that's recorded through webcam footage into the movement of a 3d model. This project has involved 3d graphics and AI through 2d pose estimation and 2d to 3d pose lifitng. This project's been pretty fun so far. Here's the github link:

aabiji··on Ask HN: What is the most interesting thing you've learned lately?
Lately I've been going through [less_slow.cpp](https://github.com/ashvardanian/less_slow.cpp) and learning about different performance oriented c++ coding practices.
aabiji··on It doesn't matter if your app is shit
I think Flappy Bird and other viral things like that are definitely exceptions to the trend, where the creator gets popular because of their product, not the other way around. I think generally the point I was trying to make was that already being popular makes marketing a product incredibly easier.

I'm not really sure what you mean by the more "popular" people have people go in and clean their mess behind the scenes, because the outcome is still ultimately the same in the end.

Good point though.

aabiji··on Athena spacecraft declared dead after toppling over on moon
No, sound needs a medium to pass through and there isn't (ok fine, yes there is, but it's not sufficient) an atmosphere on the moon.

Interesting philosophical questions though :)

aabiji··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2024
Noise cancelling headphones were a huge boost to my productivity.
aabiji··on Orbit by Mozilla
If you pin the extension in the toolbar, there's an option to "disable" the extension. The floating popup goes away and using the extension to summarize still works.
aabiji··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2024?
Frankenstein. I think the warning the story serves to communicate is all the more glaring in light of llms and openai's restructuring.
aabiji··on Ask HN: Learning programming when AI can do better?
Learning coding is still valuable for the same reason knowing basic arithmetic is useful. You technically don't need to know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide since a calculator can do it better, but even so it's still an incredibly useful skill. I think coding is the same way.

Now, is software engineering still a viable long term career option? Honestly, probably not (to be fair, I think most white collar jobs will be significantly automated away anyways). But if it's something you're genuinely interested in, I'd say you should still give it a shot.

aabiji··on Dumb TVs deserve a comeback
This is tangential, but I think TV in general, smart or dumb, is slowly becoming obsolete, especially with genZ.
aabiji··on Creating a QR Code step by step
I built an implementation in Rust a while back:

aabiji··on Ask HN: What are you replacing uBlock Origin with?
You could setup a proxy server to block ads. This might be of interest to you:

aabiji··on Show HN: Focal, a Pomodoro App
Yeah, that's a bug. I'll fix it. Sorry. EDIT: It's fixed now
aabiji··on Focal: A Pomodoro App
Focal is a pomodoro web app. I know there's a lot of productivity apps already, but I'm releasing this since I figure someone might find it useful. Focal was more of a short, 3 day project so it may be rough around the edges, but I think it does the job. In any case, Focal is open source and I would be happy to merge contributions.

Here's the github repository: https://github.com/aabiji/focal

Have a nice day!

aabiji··on Ask HN: What was an interesting project you started and finished over a weekend?
I build a youtube video downloader. I was under the impression that figuring this out would be extremely difficult but with ressources online, it was surprisingly easy. I got a basic downloader down in less than [200 lines](https://gist.github.com/aabiji/c65254af440b1bb53149b2d6a9faf...)!
aabiji··on Ask HN: Do you also marvel at the complexity of everyday objects?
All the time -- especially thinking about software. Abstraction is insane.
aabiji··on Show HN: Muse, a CLI background music player
Hey! Yeah, using cargo install --git should work. You should just make sure that ~/.cargo/bin is in your PATH.
aabiji··on Show HN: Muse, a CLI background music player
Hey! OP here. I primarily work in the terminal, so Muse is a more convenient way for me to play music. Personally, I don't really care what track should play, so as you said it just cycles through predesignated ones. The reason why I call it a "background" music player is that I can just run Muse, and it will play music without any manual intervention or thought.
aabiji··on Ask HN: What Are You Building?

aabiji··on Ask HN: What’s Your Morning Routine?

Thanks so much!
aabiji··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Hey Peter, I'm currently in high school in Canada and I know that I want to live my life in the US. Ideally I would also like to school in a US university. I also don't have any familial ties in the US. As an immigration attorney, could you map out how I could immigrate to the US, in terms of the visa I need and the process of acquiring a green card? Thank you for your time.
aabiji··on 'Verified human': Worldcoin users queue up for iris scans
Just for context, does WorldCoin actually save your iris information somewhere, or are the scans just a one time thing to generate your WorldId? The thought of iris scanning is slightly creepy, but I'm curious ...
