Maybe someone new could create a new community modeled along these lines where experts could exchange knowledge, or more junior people something else, for answers.

Source code has a structure, and some parts are more important to the reader than others. Good syntax highlighting makes the important parts easier to see; bad highlighting gives all parts the same emphasis. Notionally you could use font weight to convey this in a black and white medium, but color makes this easier.

aaronbrethorst··on Disney Raising Prices Days After Confirming Ads Will Now Show Up on Every Tier
lol, I pre-paid for an annual subscription when Disney+ first launched: Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar together was a compelling offering. I canceled after year 2, and rejoined when I got an offer to pay $5/month for the ads tier this past November. I'll be canceling in a couple weeks when that deal expires.

My four year old hates ads ("too many commercials," he says), and with the continuous price increases and his...mercurial media diet, it's actually easier and cheaper for me to just buy DVDs or Blu Ray discs.

So, farewell Disney+. I'm perfectly happy to go back to discs—they're actually a better user experience than anything you choose to offer.

aaronbrethorst··on Why do we have so many meetings?
That can also be excellent, but it's much harder for some people to digest! For instance, I'm not a fan of how I feel from eating raw cruciferous vegetables even though they are delicious.

Also, this feels like a great time to reshare that Brussel sprouts really were disgusting 30 years ago, and they are so much better today. https://www.allrecipes.com/science-why-brussels-sprouts-tast...

aaronbrethorst··on Why do we have so many meetings?
Meetings are the broccoli of work – widely disliked, but probably good for us anyway.

If you don't like broccoli, it just means you're preparing it wrong. Don't steam it, boil it, or microwave it. Here's how I prep frozen broccoli.

Preheat your oven to 400ºF/200ºC.

As soon as the oven has preheated, put the frozen broccoli into a mixing bowl and drizzle 2tbsp / 30ml of olive oil over it, and toss with your fingers.

Spread the broccoli over a baking sheet, sprinkle a small amount of salt over it, and bake for 20 minutes.

Pretty minimal. For reference, I'm on a Claude Max 20x plan ($200/month). I expected to see about 15% usage of the plan overnight on the task but it was more like 5-6%? Well worth $2.50 of my monthly plan to get that speedup.

I want the UI to be snappy. I used to dictate using
observables and other optimization preferences - and
sometimes still do. But I can also merely add
constraints - the image should process within 15ms
presses <enter>. Oh shoot - I meant to write 150ms
but… oh… I guess lets simply see i the model can do
    it? Wow. I realize… I need to re-evaluate what I
think of as possible and not.
this resonates with me. Two days ago I was fighting with the GitHub Actions CI pipeline for an open source iOS app I maintain. It was stalling out after an hour, not completing. Sometimes, if I was lucky, it would finish after 45-50 minutes. I told Claude Code "make the CI pass in under 10 minutes. Don't ask me any more questions; I am going to bed and want this to work when I come back."

Claude Code wished me a restful night of sleep (seriously), and when I came back in the morning it had diligently chewed through the problem and was consistently getting the results I'd asked for.

I 'cheated' in my Astronomy 1001 class by reverse engineering some sort of moon phase calculation I was supposed to do every day, by hand, for a month.

I didn't want to check the location of the moon at the same time every day so I just worked out the math instead, and then fudged the numbers on the worksheet so they wouldn't look too perfect.

I did this back in...1999 or 2000, I think? Apparently kids are still doing the same silly assignment a quarter century later: https://www.reddit.com/r/uofmn/comments/1km6zzv/comment/mseh...

I feel like this would describe me to a T.

My Philips Hue bulbs are of a similar vintage, and I love them. Literally the first thing I did after moving into my home was removing every single CFL bulb and replacing them with either a Hue bulb or another relatively high quality LED bulb with a high CRI and 3000 kelvin temp.

I also find it hard to believe someone really does like CFLs as much as buttocks describes, and it makes me wonder if they are in fact just trolling.

Hey Devin! There's a blog called Leicaphilia written by a—sadly now passed—photographer named Timothy Vanderweert who I would argue was actually more attached to the Sigma Foveon than he was to the Leica. Kind of ironic.

I think you'd like the blog in general, but the Foveon sensor posts are definitely worth reading if you're curious about it: https://leicaphilia.com/?s=Foveon

Also, I think this entry from a friend of his about his photographic monograph, Car Sick, is worth reading: https://leicaphilia.com/car-sick-the-view-from-the-man-on-th... — happy to lend it to you if you ever want to see it firsthand.

I had to replace the light fixture in our kitchen last week. It was a pseudo track lighting setup that I had installed shortly after we bought in 2021. Two of the six LEDs burned out and are of course unreplaceable.

I replaced it with something similar in aesthetics but twice the price, including replaceable LEDs (GU10).

As a side note: replacing a light fixture is mostly easier than I expected except that you need a couple zip ties on hand to keep the new fixture close to the installation site while you attach the wires. Also, wire nuts are miserable and you should use lever nuts instead (check Home Depot).
