abyx··on It’s Not Your Team, It’s You
I’m sorry, but wut? I’m OP. I work with companies globally, first of all.

But Israeli culture, in high tech, is the exact opposite. Even in my military service, I was arguing against a Lt. Colonel when I had 4 months of experience. Chutzpah is what is driving half of the local startups: CEOs have to convince their teams that regularly poke holes in their plans and ideas. Not all companies are that way, but for years I’ve been hearing from people I tend to assume too many people would speak up. First time I’m hearing I have a bias towards the other side.

abyx··on Don’t Shy Away or Risk Cowardly Management
Thanks for letting me know. Not a native English speaker so these show up every now and then even though I use tools like Grammarly. Will fix when next to a computer!
abyx··on Benchmarking the Android Emulator on AWS – 16x Improvement
I wonder what is this good for? Why not just running it locally or on a device?
abyx··on The Curious Case of iPhone 6+ 1080p Display
Am I the only one that noticed the iPhone on the left is actually a 5s and not a 6?
abyx··on How Much Optimization Is The Right Amount?
Lots of good points there, one of my favorites is the Collison Close: “Open up your laptop. I'll get you an account and code the integration right now.”
abyx··on Show HN: iOS Provisioning profile hell begone
What I found most interesting is the price choice. Don't recall ever seeing a "$.49" price before on the app store :)
abyx··on Only 25 Percent of Yahoo Employees Willing to Eat Mail “Dogfood”
Not that big of a shocker. Wondering what are the stats at Google :)
abyx··on Code koans for C?
Do you want us the SO question? Doesn't seem to have valuable answers
abyx··on Review my Startup: SendTweet.com
Creepy to have someone tweet me when I didn't give you my twitter. Creepier when a mistake is made. Might want to convert mails to twitters for inside analytics or spotting influential users though, but dislike providing extra services with mail addresses of my users. Creepy.
abyx··on Show HN: Instagram for your terminal
I see it has a jpg to ASCII mode, but doesn't tell you it's a dependency you need to install
abyx··on [dead]
Ironically enough, a bit if a mediocre post.
abyx··on Show HN: Send SMS to your number for free from shell
I blogged about this ~4 years ago :) http://www.codelord.net/2009/02/26/sending-sms-using-google-...

Some facts:

1. IDF has dropped leaflets in general areas that are to be attacked 2. IDF is calling the houses in building that need to be attacked because of stashed ammo etc. 3. IDF just now fired warning shots (no harm done) near homes.

If people are still there, it's usually because Hamas is holding them hostages as human shields, as Hamas is bound to do.

Also, IDF NEVER intends to harm civilians. As an Israeli I'm deeply sorry to see casualties, but I know there is no army that does so much to prevent it, and certainly when the enemy is boasting injuring civilians (Official Hamas tweet from earlier today https://t.co/jpB5SHWJ )

Succinct - I don't think that word means what you think it means
abyx··on Why was a scam company able to raise $76 Million Series B?
Yes. This is called "negative option billing" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_option_billing). We (at BillGuard) see many people that fall into these kind of shady business models. It's pretty amazing that this is still legal and VCs are throwing money at it.
abyx··on You Owe it to Yourself to be Old-School
No fluff intended. And no upvotes phishing - I don't write for upvotes. Been bothered by this, and hope to help someone understand this is important.

Good day!

abyx··on Using Puppet to Automatically Configure New EC2 Instances
We're just starting off with Puppet and EC2, but in general my current feeling is that I'd rather postpone maintaining images as long as I can. This is because a) I don't trust myself to keep these up-to-date, meaning I'll need configuration once the instance is up b) The cost of making a change is tiny with puppet. If you've got images you have to save them again after making the changes. That extra step currently has no value for me, when setting up a machine takes 2 minutes (which is fast enough for us)
abyx··on Say No to Null Checks
Nah, it's not particular, 3.0 was a bad joke :)

Well, I know better than to get into discussions about style !

abyx··on Say No to Null Checks
Well, my point was that validating in the function does no good: it'll raise an error you'll see in the logs and debug later to try and understand what caused it. Why not write the test that makes sure your code will never call the function with bad input and be done with it?

And, you should write a test. Period. A factory isn't needed and the bunch of shit is only if you're using version < 3.0.

Did you really miss this in the post? That's good input, thanks, and thanks for reading!

Israeli army has reported soldiers have been wounded (they were stabbed and fired at). Open fire at soldiers (while already trying to dispute a country's authority) and yet be surprised there's a response? Stupid, stupid people. Would the any country not respond to vessels coming to their shores and firing?

HaAretz is a pro-Palestinian paper (though mainly printed in Hebrew).
abyx··on Norvig: The Odds of Finding a Set in The Card Game SET
I've asked him about this, here is his reply:

"[...] about itertools -- I guess I got the impression that itertools is deprecated in 3.0, or at least that Guido doesn't much like it, so I have stayed away from it. And itertools.combinations is only in 2.6, so I think I will leave things as is, for those still stuck in 2.5."

abyx··on New IDE: code bubbles
2 things

1. /Way/ too much mouse-action for coding in my opinion

2. I saw no mention of the best killer feature I can see for this, which is allowing refactoring and restructuring of code by extract bubbles, moving them around, popping bubbles... I've been wanting to perform refactorings in a visible fashion for quite some time now.

abyx··on IBM undercuts Google with discount e-mail service
Who in their right mind would choose Notes over anything else (Gmail, outlook, pine, telnet)?
abyx··on Ask HN: Worst working conditions you have written code in?
Had to write some code in a servers room, which of course was really cold. Other than that, I couldn't sit down, and had nowhere to place the keyboard on, so a pal held it up while I was typing...
abyx··on How To Pull an All-Nighter
I don't whether you've read the post or not, but it's talking about preparing for a team's all nighter.
