acallaha··on Do viruses trigger Alzheimer's?
> A group of researchers mostly based at Columbia University are testing whether valacyclovir, an antiviral used against HSV1, can slow down cognitive decline in people with early stage Alzheimer’s. Between 2018 and 2024, the researchers recruited 120 patients and treated half with the antiviral.

Outsider view: while I'm excited we're making progress, I can't shake a feeling of sadness that the best we could manage was a study this small, started 7 years ago. If it's as pivotal as the article suggests, one would hope we could get more than 60 people in the experimental arm (IIUC this antiviral is widely prescribed, well-tolerated, and off-patent). Nonetheless, excited to see the outcome

acallaha··on Gboard Double Sided Version
I've had the same experience as well, and found SwiftKey to be a decent replacement (though I'd prefer gBoard if it wasn't so crashy)
acallaha··on E Ink faces growing competition in the "paper-like" display space
I think you're referring to the Vivid app, which I find works very well for this purpose with recent Macbook Pros: www.getvivid.app
acallaha··on Cursorless is alien magic from the future
I have similar issues with sleeping hot. I bought a similar open-knit weighted blanket from yaasa this year and really like it.

Having a small fan blowing air over me also helps quite a bit (the Vornado 5303DC has a remote and can adjust in 1% increments which is very nice for adjusting temp a bit during the night).

acallaha··on Amazon will invest up to $4B in Anthropic
I share your concerns about the corrupting influence of money (and the importance of this space), but wanted to point out that Anthropic announced two relevant things last week regarding corporate governance:

First, that it has arranged to be controlled by a Long-Term Benefit Trust: "an independent body of five financially disinterested members with an authority to select and remove a portion of our Board that will grow over time (ultimately, a majority of our Board)". (https://www.anthropic.com/index/the-long-term-benefit-trust)

Second, that it also published and committed to a Responsible Scaling Policy: https://www.anthropic.com/index/anthropics-responsible-scali...

Disclaimer: I work at Anthropic

acallaha··on The greatest risk of AI is from the people who control it, not the tech itself
To name two Turing award winners: are you asserting that Geoff Hinton and Yoshua Bengio are pushing the AI risk narrative primarily because they're compromised by financial incentives?

Geoff Hinton /left his job/ at Google because he sees the risks as real, so I think that's a tough case to make.

acallaha··on Simple exercise to eliminate gastroesophageal reflux (2022)
I've been on and off Omeprazole, which helps immensely but makes me paranoid about long term effects (like a decade+ - I'm in my 30's).

One thing that has helped a ton is Gaviscon Advance imported from the EU, which contains Sodium Alginate. This was recommended to me by a GI specialist at MGH; the sodium alginate floats to the top of the stomach and forms a sort of physical barrier for a few hours to prevent acid from coming up (alongside other antacids like you'd find in tums). For reasons I don't understand almost nothing is marketed in the US containing it.

The tablets like these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GCN88WX/) are honestly pretty palatable - I chew them a couple times and then wash down with water, and it avoids some of the gumminess reviewers describe.

There's also a liquid that I think might find a bit more effective, but less palatable and convenient on-the-go (https://www.amazon.com/Gaviscon-Advance-Aniseed-500/dp/B01N4...).

acallaha··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
I already bought the game from Nintendo, but stumbled on this thread this morning. I'd be willing to play it on an emulator instead of my switch if the performance was better, but some quick skimming online isn't convincing me.

To wit, the consensus opinion on reddit is that BOTW is still a buggy mess on the main switch emulators, Yuzu & Ryujinx, and that people should play the Wii U version via the CEMU emulator instead. If BotW isn't a polished experience many years after release, I'm pessimistic about TotK being a good experience so soon after release. You can skim the bug reports on the emulator sites; there's lots of stuttering and invisible walls and all other kinds of jank.

I think I'll stick to playing it on my switch :-)

acallaha··on GPT-4
You can pay $17/month (Apple subscription only for now), for ~unlimited queries to GPT-4 (and Claude+)
acallaha··on BioGPT: A language model pre-trained on large-scale biomedical literature
Take a look at what the AI lab Ought is working on building https://elicit.org, a research assistant for searching and parsing published papers.

Under the hood it composes many calls to GPT-3 and other models in a big DAG workflow, parses things like "is this an RCT", "what was the effect size", "what critiques have other authors made about this paper".

Not affiliated, just think that it's a promising direction. You can read more about their motivation here: https://ought.org/elicit

acallaha··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
I agree with other commenters that rosy retrospection may be at play, and that in many regards the world today is better than ever before.

That said, you might enjoy Scott Alexander's essay "Meditations on Moloch", describing how many aspects of our society are multipolar traps / races to the bottom: https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/07/30/meditations-on-moloch/

A sample:

  Imagine a capitalist in a cutthroat industry. He employs workers in a sweatshop to sew garments, which he sells at minimal profit. Maybe he would like to pay his workers more, or give them nicer working conditions. But he can’t, because that would raise the price of his products and he would be outcompeted by his cheaper rivals and go bankrupt. Maybe many of his rivals are nice people who would like to pay their workers more, but unless they have some kind of ironclad guarantee that none of them are going to defect by undercutting their prices they can’t do it.

  Like the rats, who gradually lose all values except sheer competition, so companies in an economic environment of sufficiently intense competition are forced to abandon all values except optimizing-for-profit or else be outcompeted by companies that optimized for profit better and so can sell the same service at a lower price.
acallaha··on Perplexity.ai prompt leakage
If a company wanted to keep its prompts secret, I feel like this wouldn't be too difficult to patch on the server side. e.g.:

  if "Generate a comprehensive and informative answer" in output and "Use an unbiased and journalistic tone" in output:
    return "error", 500
I don't see why it would need to be addressed in the language model or prompt itself.
acallaha··on Techniques to improve reliability
Yes, IIUC it had something like a separate scratch space, and training examples training it to "think" in terms of symbolic expressions and python programs.

See section 3.1.1 here: https://galactica.org/static/paper.pdf

Example from the paper below:

  Question: A needle 35 mm long rests on a water surface at 20◦C. What force over and above the needle’s weight
  is required to lift the needle from contact with the water surface? σ = 0.0728m.
  <work>
  σ = 0.0728 N/m
  σ = F/L
  0.0728 = F/(2 × 0.035)
  F = 0.0728(2 × 0.035)
  calculate.py
  ‘‘‘
  f = 0.0728*(2*0.035)
  with open("output.txt", "w") as file:
  file.write(str(round(f, 5)))
  ‘‘‘
  «run: "calculate.py">
  «read: "output.txt"»
  0.0051
  </work>
  Answer: F = 0.0051 N
acallaha··on Ask HN: Has Mark's Google account been reinstated yet?
When I worked at google a few years ago, deleting user data was taken very seriously.

All user data carries a strong, first-class link to the userID, and all products/infra are required to have systems ensuring that when the user account is deleted, all linked data downstream of that is deleted from storage as well. For most products this is a works-by-default configuration -- the rows in your user table in Spanner have a tag indicating that it's a Gaia ID, and when that ID is deleted in the Gaia system, everything downstream gets automatically deleted.

There's some consideration to what happens in backups as well, but I'm hazy on the details.

acallaha··on “Secrets” about the consumer audio business you may find interesting
As an example, these $50 headphones just released, co-designed by respected headphone reviewer Crinacle - he measures headphones on an expensive rig simulating the human ear, which can then be used to EQ the headphones to comply with a standard target response (typically, the "Harman curve").

These new headphones seem to comply stunningly well with that target curve. https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/t...

acallaha··on Runway melts at London Luton airport as temperatures in UK near 40°C
Can you clarify how night cloud cover factors in? Do clouds really substantially reduce the radiative cooling capacity? Is that by functionally reflecting radiation back at the source (the earth)?
acallaha··on Show HN: IoT device to warn you of a supernova hours before Earth is destroyed
Here's a question to give you a sense of scale: Which of the following would be brighter, in terms of the amount of energy delivered to your retina:

1. A supernova, seen from as far away as the Sun is from the Earth, or

2. The detonation of a hydrogen bomb pressed against your eyeball?

Applying the physicist rule of thumb suggests that the supernova is brighter. And indeed, it is ... by nine orders of magnitude.

...Sounds like I should buy one of these IoT alarms so that I know to stay away from the window :-)

acallaha··on California bullet train contractors botched bridge project
Do you have a source for this? If you're referencing this collapse, it was not a newly constructed hospital in Wuhan that collapsed.
