achille2··on Amazon QuickSight – Business Intelligence by AWS
Is this just Amiato? Did they acquire them?

Edit: Yep, looks like it. Congrats to the Amiato team.

achille2··on Organizational debt is like technical debt, but worse
Curious to know how you found out, and why you don't bring it up with your manager.

This is why Spolksy has his tiered plans where everyone gets paid the same (hiring someone at a higher payrate means raising everyones pay)

achille2··on A Giant, Fake City in the Middle of the Desert
It's hard to find a universally recognized small town of that size. Could you name one?

Why do you think grubwithus failed?
achille2··on How Coursera Competes for the Best Talent
I'd be curious to see the specific numbers on that spreadsheet as well. Where is the data sourced from? Is it one engineer that conducted multiple interviews or do they pertain to statistical averages.
achille2··on Single-shot compressed photography at one hundred billion frames per second
It's 10^11 frames per second actually -- light travels 3 millimeters between each frame.
achille2··on Uber.gov – It’s Time to Let the Government Drive
"He said a lot of the drivers pocket the cash for themselves which is why they demand cash."

Uh. No. Where else would the money go? Cabbies pay everything upfront. They keep all earnings.

The problem here is that both cabbies and customers are in a bad deal. The bulk of the profits go to taxi medallion holders which are typically investors.

Looking at a (failed) login flow, it looks like they are using Oracle SSO

achille2··on Bringing SSD Performance to the DIMM form factor
Does this mean you won't have traditional memory available at all (outside of L1-3 cache)? Or is it able to mix and match between real DDR3 memory and SSD?

achille2··on iPhone 6 Screens Demystified
I still don't understand how the iphone6 can run existing apps while having the same dpi as the iphone5 but with a larger screen.
achille2··on Fasting triggers stem cell regeneration of damaged, old immune system
Can someone with access to the original paper kindly lookup specifically how long each fast lasted and how often?

The article is a bit vague: periods of no food for two to four days at a time over the course of six months

achille2··on Obesity research confirms long-term weight loss almost impossible
There's no hocus pocus in Intermittent Fasting. Eating less === less calories ingested.

The difference that keeps IF sustainable long term is the freedom to eat, and on fasting days there's the hope for tomorrow.

There are lots of health benefits to IF as well: Dietary restriction has been shown to have several health benefits including increased insulin sensitivity, stress resistance, reduced morbidity, and increased life span

achille2··on Obesity research confirms long-term weight loss almost impossible
I must say that I've been the 5-2 diet (intermittent fasting) for nearly two years and It has worked for me.

achille2··on Can I drop a pacemaker 0day?
Of course you can. Executing this type of attack would be more technically complex then executing a plain old murder, with say a simple gun.
achille2··on Comcast and Netflix now have a direct adjacency
I always thought that Netflix served everything from AWS. How can they they have their own AS number and peering locations?

achille2··on Hard drive hack provides root access, even after reinstall
The knee jerk reaction to secure boot-anything from the technical community has been generally "No!", "It's a trap" etc.
achille2··on “When all your engines stop, the flight is over”
Note that they did periodic backups, which would have scrubbed the same sectors as a full resync, so that's not the case.
achille2··on How Google is Killing Organic Search
I see lots of comments bashing Google, ads are evil, all that. But honestly how many people search for "italian food" on the web expecting global results to be relevant locally? Google is providing exactly what people are looking for when they google for Italian.
achille2··on College Degree Required by Increasing Number of Companies

achille2··on Use Zsh
I can't provide source right now, but Microsoft pretty much said the same thing when they updated handwriting recognition for Windows Tablet PC Edition.

In the past they'd go through a procedure where they would learn how you write.

But later on, they decided it was most effective for you to learn to write in a way that the handwriting recognition software would understand.

achille2··on Google Spanner's Most Surprising Revelation: NoSQL is Out and NewSQL is In
His employer doesn't matter. It doesn't add anything productive to the discussion. If one of Bing's developers had laughed off articles about Microsoft's architecture as "look at the adorable little journalists running around throwing big words around", I would not expect it to rise to top comment.

achille2··on Apple iPhone 5 US Carrier Comparison Chart
This is cool but if you could, please add prepaid? Specifically add the following?

- 4th column for StraighTalk as one of the carriers

- 5th column for Tmobile as one of the carriers)

- Cost to buy iphone (199 normally, but full price prepaid)

- Cost over the entire life of the plan

See:

- Tmobile: http://9to5mac.com/2012/09/10/t-mobile-unveils-its-big-plans...

- StraighTalk: http://9to5mac.com/2012/07/30/review-the-iphone-on-straight-...

Note: Since StraightTalk resells AT&T using their own antennas, the available service would be same. Correct?
