actionscripted··on GitLab 6.3 released: open-source software to collaborate on code
Been using GitLab since (I think) 4.0 and have yet to experience any problems upgrading on a fairly standard LAMP-like web server setup on a VPS. To anyone having troubles, what exactly are the errors/problems?

(Late) Edit: any problems I've ever had with upgrades have been related to not properly adjusting settings when moving new config files around. For example, in upgrading to 6.3 I failed to copy over my custom listen lines in unicorn for a non-standard port.

actionscripted··on Zurb Foundation 5 Released
When you get into those dynamic applications I think you'll find the likes of Foundation much more appealing. This is not a WYSIWYG-style tool, this is for developers building sites by hand and the example styles aren't often used in production.
actionscripted··on CSS text filling with water
The current wave of CSS3 effects are very much akin to the early days of Flash. Oftentimes it's a superfluous effect that hampers readability or usability, and I sincerely hope some lessons were learned from the Flash heyday. Just because you can move your content in 3D, add transitions and effects -- all in browser-native rules -- doesn't mean you should.

I'm on a pretty beefy Macbook most of the time and there are a lot of simple-looking sites that are almost impossible to use because of the slow-down from their page effects. The scrolling behavior from parallax or fixed effects really seem to be the worst.

If you want to see the next wave of CSS effects, just check out one of the old copypasta providers like DynamicDrive or FlashKit. ;)

actionscripted··on PayPal Redesign
Not to be too harsh, but the final design looks like a rushed Bootstrap prototype. I like many of the decisions made and agree with others here who think the navigation needs some love, but it just feels like every other flat, blue site I've seen.
actionscripted··on Signet: Sign your work in the development console
cURL here, not working either.
actionscripted··on Mozilla will add H.264 to Firefox as Cisco makes push for WebRTC’s future
(Former) Flash nerd here. The problems with plackback and scrubbing are absolutely the fault of the Flash player and there's really nothing you can do about it short of hacking your own video handling into the SWF format. There are a lot of low-level network-related problems in Flash.

I have zero real proof, but I know for a long time Adobe (Macromedia) was pushing their streaming server and didn't really put a lot of effort into handling streaming/buffering without it and I suspect this just never got fixed as things were "good enough".

actionscripted··on Poll: Do you use antivirus software?
Under OS X 10.9: No, Under Win 8.1: No

When I'm in Windows I'm only playing games or casually browsing the web so attacks aren't a concern and if I do get infected I'll just wipe it and let Steam re-sync things. On my Mac I've got Time Machine just in case things get weird but, while I know OS X isn't virus-proof, I'm really not worried about catching something.

actionscripted··on f.lux has been updated to a new version
I agree for the most part, however when I'm at the design phase I'm generally working from required brand palettes or using swatches I've defined so I know the colors are good.

Maybe I'm Doing It Wrong™, but I design all the time with F.lux in this manner and don't have any problems.

actionscripted··on GitBucket: A Github/BitBucket clone in Scala
I'd like to offer a counter experience where the upgrades are pretty simple: stop, git pull, rake a bit, update a few configs (maybe), start. It's certainly not trivial or painless, but it isn't that bad and it's nice that they're releasing regularly (22nd of each month, I believe).

I agree that it is absolutely meant for groups more than individuals. We use GitLab like crazy in the office, but we also have GitHub accounts for community contributions and BitBucket accounts for private/personal stuff.

Edit: see their 6.0 to 6.1 release notes for more: https://github.com/gitlabhq/gitlabhq/blob/master/doc/update/...

actionscripted··on Born of Reddit, Imgur now dwarfs the ‘front page of the Internet’
So what you're saying is, Imgur needs to partner with a clothing and accessories company and REALLY make some money.
actionscripted··on I Am An Object Of Internet Ridicule, Ask Me Anything
To add to the discussion/close the loop: http://www.reddit.com/r/TrueReddit/comments/1mp79c/i_am_an_o...

Having been on Reddit for more than 6 years, what always blows me away are these "lessons". Sure, everyone backpedals a bit and thinks, "gee, he's not the douchebag hipster we thought and we acted like assholes" but it happens over, and over and over.

As others have also mentioned in here, I'm always amazed that those most prone to being bullied seem more than okay taking on the role of bully online with zero context.

actionscripted··on The iPhone 5s Review
It allows for 5 stored "fingers", so you could set things up for each thumb, each index finger and your nose. Assuming there aren't any security issues about using a nose -- and that you're not worried about security much anyways -- you should be golden. How unique are nose prints?
actionscripted··on Object injection vulnerability enables remote code execution in WordPress 3.6
Pelican isn't exactly client-friendly and has far fewer features than WordPress. Pelican and the rest of the static-site generators might be great for developers or tech-savvy folks, but you'd be hard-pressed to sell the system to the average web client.
actionscripted··on Unix Commands I Wish I’d Discovered Years Earlier
Alread rocks. You can develop workflows for common groups of tasks and it integrates well with iTunes, 1Password, Terminal and other system actions/apps.
actionscripted··on Pltts - Find your colour palette
If you want download options (AI, SVG, etc.) and the other ColourLovers features you can copy the palette ID from the URL http://pltts.me/palettes/92095 and drop it into the ColourLovers URL http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/92095

Edit: I do feel like a link to the CL page on palettes would be nice, but I certainly (think) I understand why it isn't there.

actionscripted··on Firebug 1.12 – New Features
Think what s/he's saying is that it helps that they use their own tools for UI dev versus those who hammer on the browser and made comparable tools, not that Firebug has a better UI.
actionscripted··on Create a font from your own handwriting
Super easy, very nice result. It smooths the scanned forms, so you get clean letters. Took about 5 minutes.
actionscripted··on Firefox 23 is available
Scrollbars aren't bad at the moment, but this one has bothered me for a while: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=780726

A quick resize (redraw) fixes things, but it's the only app on my machine that tweaks like that going from space to space.

actionscripted··on Skrollr - parallax scrolling for the masses
At least you could completely disable Flash. The new CSS animations and effects are baked right in.
actionscripted··on iOS7 – Why Is Everyone Suddenly A Design Critic?
My only real negative criticism is with the icons. Everything else I can learn to love -- or already love -- but there are some fundamental issues with the gradient directions, shape details and overall consistency.

I think your redesign is a great step in the right direction! The gradients are going light-to-dark in a consistent manner, the scale of the shapes within each icon feels appropriate and you even simplified some of them further to make them more obvious. If your icons were the ones presented, I'd have much less to complain about.

actionscripted··on Apple Introduces iOS 7
It just feels like the like source is different for different icons (some go light-to-dark, others are the reverse), and it's driving my designer eye crazy.
actionscripted··on Show HN: Yoleo – A Beautiful RSS Reader
If we're picking this battle up, can everyone also argue a bit about the backend? I've been with Django for years, but I'm tempted to get back into Rails with how well it seems some of the JS frameworks are supported.

actionscripted··on Flat Design and Color Trends
(With how many creative people there are doing web work nowadays I'm always amazed that design trends seem to stem from the most recent/popular OS.)

What's great about the Metro style is it makes responsive layouts dead-simple and it cuts the design process down considerably. Sure it looks boring, but that's okay for now because I spent years hearing about wet floors and jelly buttons and skeuomorphism and...

It's refreshing to be able to pick a few colors, pick a few fonts, put it on a grid and be done. To me it almost feels like laziness, but it's a nice change of pace from the days when a single button took hours to design/build.
