actionscripted··on Someone was breaking into Orange Spain RIPE account (and break their /12)
> This means in some sense RIPE's security policies reflect what European ISPs and similar wanted, for good or ill.

Traditional routing has always been very, very open. Like a club where anyone is welcome and if new folks mess stuff up it just gets fixed.

Several IRRs used to allow RPSL changes by email to their systems with only maintainer auth and no verification of route ownership (e.g. you register with the IRR, then publish Google routes).

It’s all getting hardened nowadays with things like no more email, layers of verification, RPKI, etc.

It’s not necessarily what folks want but how this stuff had traditionally been handled. Thankfully it’s all changing because of events like this.

Yes it does: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/markdo...
actionscripted··on Show HN: Twelve Days of Shell
Love it. I do think that the "learn" section should always be open. For me (FF) after the first challenge it's closed by default which leaves just a command line and no clear direction.
actionscripted··on Dev Fonts
If you're working on code for most of the day, you will absolutely be making decisions that enhance your experience.

Could be an editor, monitor, chair, etc. It might not seem like some of those little things matter -- if I can sit in the chair, it works for me! -- but they do to some and typography is one of those things.

I don't understand folks who don't understand this. I get it if you don't personally care about typography but every developer is making QOL decisions.

actionscripted··on Russia opposition leader poisoned with Novichok
If you ever wonder about the extent of Russia's online efforts consider that the comments on this HN thread might be part of things.

Not saying anything in here is good/bad/other but you rarely see this level of flagged and down-voted comments in a HN thread.

actionscripted··on Amazon Renames Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming
A lot of streamers have their in-game or in-client user names include "TTV" to let you know they're on the platform and so you can easily find them.

I wonder how streamers would feel having to change their names from something like "ProGamerTTV" to "ProGramerAG" or if it would even happen/matter.

actionscripted··on Why GPT-3 Matters
You are pushing this idea so hard and blasting this thread with copy/paste comments. It's obvious you're excited about it and that's great but there is a lot that isn't shown and that's where the real work is being done.

Just because it looks like magic, doesn't mean there isn't someone pulling some strings somewhere else to aid the illusion.

actionscripted··on Show HN: Zepel, a Jira alternative for product teams
You might give ActiveCollab a shot. I've spent 16 years going through various project/product management systems and it's one of the only ones that springs to mind when you mention sharing client access like that and trying to keep things user-friendly.

That said, if you're using the service desk stuff from Jira I might stay with it. I understand the pain of having to administer Jira and how it creates project-specific EVERYTHING on the backend (workflows, et al.) but it's great for end users and it's super flexible.

actionscripted··on The State of CSS 2019
Not even close. Marketing has lead to some absurd uses of CSS but it's more about adaptive/responsive design.

When you need to handle an almost unlimited range of screen sizes having your visual system able to handle a little math is critical.

actionscripted··on Designers Spill the Beans: How to Make Your Own Logo from Scratch
1: Find logos you like, and a few from your industry.

2: Pick a few colors you like, and a few in your industry.

3: Pick a few fonts you like, and a few in your industry.

4: Find icons/shapes related to your business (google images: "[business type] icon" as a start, then branch from there based on what you find).

5: Mash it all together as many different ways a possible.

6: See what you like/dislike. Repeat as needed.

That's it, that's the secret. Get stuff you like and stuff that works and mash it together to see what happens. Then take your mash-ups and keep mashing and playing until you find something that fits. You don't have to love it, just get something that works. A lot of folks don't like their branding initially.

What designers won't tell you is that the process is sometimes just brute-forcing creativity and that's totally okay. You can't always feel inspired or have that "one perfect idea" and you've still gotta get stuff done.

actionscripted··on Shumway: Flash implementation in JavaScript
> Latest commit 16451d8 on Mar 29, 2016

I'm all for keeping old things around and that includes Flash stuff (look at my user name). But Shumway is super dead.

I believe there are more active projects going you might want to check out if you're looking to keep Flash alive/around.

actionscripted··on Why do all websites look the same?
Also:

1) Why are all buildings the same? Light switches are often in similar places and the space between the floor and ceiling is pretty standard.

2) Why are all vehicles the same? Mirrors are always in the same spots and seat belts all work the same.

3) Why are all laptops the same? Keyboard center on the bottom with a trackpad or nub near the center. Screen on top, ports and stuff on the sides.

There are components that are common in all facets of our lives that when different can cause problems or surprise which could be good or bad. We need to join two floors of a building. Use stairs! People understand stairs. We need to showcase a collection of clickable images. Use a grid! People understand link grids.

If you want to make your website usable you have to lean on expectations and those are pretty well defined nowadays. Imagine walking into a room and turning on the lights using a switch in the middle of the floor or plugging in your laptop's power cord at the top/back of the screen.

Most companies spending money on a website want them to feel fresh and creative and engaging but they also have to temper that with usability and expectations. That's why all websites "look the same" or at least why the author thinks they do.

Just because certain elements are in the same spot(s) or behave similarly doesn't mean things are the same. Or, at least, to me they aren't.

actionscripted··on Show HN: Vue Dark Mode – A Minimalist Dark Design System for Vue.js
I'm so tired of seeing this attitude. This isn't about being "cool" this is a visual system for Vue that includes Vue components. Meaning this isn't a collection of styles, these are components that have been styled.

Why do you feel the need to make sweeping generalizations about the author and the author's work? Just shitting on someone/something for the sake of it?

actionscripted··on WebRender is in beta
Enabled in FF Nightly 65.0a1 (2018-10-26) (64-bit) and it felt a little sluggish especially with regards to scrolling. I understand it's in beta but I guess I was expecting things to "feel" faster. Tried resizing larger sites/pages and things felt snappy but scrolling felt jumpy and off.

That said, can't wait for this to come out of beta!

actionscripted··on The Big Hack: Statements From Amazon, Apple, Supermicro, Chinese Government
The other Bloomberg article [1] says:

>"Three senior insiders at Apple say that in the summer of 2015, it, too, found malicious chips on Supermicro motherboards. Apple severed ties with Supermicro the following year, for what it described as unrelated reasons."

actionscripted··on Inside the Dramatic, Painful, and Hugely Successful Return of Reddit's Founders
To be fair and a little blunt, this is about founders returning to their product and gives a backstory about those returning. Aaron can't really return, so it makes sense he's not mentioned in this article.

I believe he's mentioned in the book the article is excerpting, "We Are the Nerds".

actionscripted··on The software engineer’s guide to asserting dominance in the workplace
Long-time Mac user and as a result long-time Mac keyboard user. Loved the low-profile desktop and laptop keyboards.

Didn't realize until I gave a mechanical board a chance (felt super weird hitting full-height keys!) but I was making a ton of typos and going slower on the Mac boards.

Now that I've gotten used to my mechanical keyboard I feel more confident in my touch typing and my speed has gone up considerably.

I did install dampener rings, though, because I didn't like how loud things were and how the keys felt.

actionscripted··on CSS Micro Reset
> ...it should be the first line of code...I don't what to force anyone to use box-sizing: border-box.

I'm not clear on what you're saying. It sounds like you're saying today it's absolutely something you should use but you don't want to force it?

actionscripted··on People Loved MoviePass Nearly to Death
I feel the same about concessions. I realize it might all be calculated to the penny for peak income but I would be more keen to regularly buy concessions if I wasn't paying close to $20 for a soda and a popcorn. I would think dropping the cost a bit might increase the number of folks buying. (The margins on it all are what really piss me off.)

I also wish it wasn't essentially a flat price for everything. A small, medium or large anything is generally just fifty cents to a dollar away from any other size. I want a small soda and popcorn I get pressed to size-up for that extra few cents to get a gallon/barrel of each.

actionscripted··on Show HN: A program to email log files using Go
Looks like the author is taking a stab at working with Go and wanted to build something to fill a need.

I would absolutely recommend Logwatch or, if you're fancy, Filebeat and Logstash.

actionscripted··on Fonts for Complex Data
I think it's less about fear of innovation and more about other constraints like space and readability.

A comma in most condensed sans serif collections like those used for nutrition labels (Helvetica, Univers, et al.) takes up less space and is more readable than a bullet or other glyph.

Here's a quick example using Roboto Condensed and the ingredients for Fruit Loops. The bullets are longer or harder to read. (Using Roboto Condensed because it's free so others can test with it and it's comparable to Helvetica/Univers).

actionscripted··on Some Android Phone Manufacturers Lying to Users About Security Updates
As I understand it you generally have 5 years for hardware and software support with software requiring that you upgrade to major versions as they're released for continued updates. Perhaps someone can share a link or provide better details for software support/EOL info?

Here's their vintage/obsolete products info page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201624

actionscripted··on CSS Sans – A font created in CSS
This is awesome. Not everything built needs to be held to best practices and these sorts of projects are what make the web exciting!

I know I'm on HN but everyone responding is taking a tone like the creator said, "this is the best way to do it and everyone should use this in production" while on the page it only says they built it because they could -- because CSS has evolved to support it.

actionscripted··on Lessons from “The Profit”
I was trying to figure a few of these out myself as I was reading the article...

Dropping low-margin products/services could mean companies stop making small websites or apps for local companies. Keeping organized could mean making sure AWS assets are tagged and tracked or that all code is version-controlled with proper branches and deployments. Knowing the numbers could mean being able to say at any given point in time how your revenue stacks up against your costs (again maybe with AWS). Keeping things clean could mean consistent file organization, tidy personal machines or servers without stray SSH keys or software.

I definitely feel like whenever I watch shows like The Profit or Restaurant Impossible I learn the same lessons: personal issues manifest and destroy, keep an eye on margins, don't be afraid to manage, keep things tidy.

actionscripted··on Alabama Sheriff Legally Took $750,000 Meant To Feed Inmates
> ...inmates are coerced by their appointed attorney (who is swamped) to waive their right for a speedy trial.

Oftentimes in the US it is less about a busy defense attourney and more about the prosecution offering a plea deal to skip trial. I can't say with any certainty why this is done but I believe it's due to overcrowding in courts and jails.

Many attourneys will suggest the defendant accept the plea deal because it's a sure thing. It's a lighter sentence than if the defendant went to court and when a case goes to court -- especially a jury trial -- it is impossible to say how it will turn out and it could end up far worse for the defendant when compared to the plea deal.

actionscripted··on Finding Pwned Passwords with 1Password
For 1PW it might be ideal to push updates and not charge for them. As a security/tool provider out of date software could be compromised or have issues which might damage their public image.
