ad404b8a372f2b9··on I'm Done with Mullvad
Just have some balls and call him a cunt if you're going to insult him, at least there will be no misunderstanding.

I can't stand these kind of passive aggressive middle-of-the-road insults, you clearly think he's a scumbag, stand by your beliefs instead of speaking like you work in HR.

As a French person the decision seems abhorrent to me. Atheists in France are also in the minority by most measures.

Yandex is great although it's degrading daily from AI spam (linked-in being the worst culprit).

Just like I'm free not to use Whatsapp, as long as I don't mind not being able to contact most of my family and friends.

And I'm free not to use Facebook, as long as I don't mind not having access to specific medical support groups which are only available there.

And Cloudflare, as long as I can stop using most modern websites.

And so on, you get my point.

It's odd to me that anyone would come up with 3, to me it was immediately very apparent from the diagram that the closest answer was 9/2.
ad404b8a372f2b9··on Ask HN: What's your "it's not stupid if it works" story?
You guys are really smart. When I was a kid I had a graphics card that would overheat and crash the computer when I played Lineage. So I would get down under my desk and blow on it...
ad404b8a372f2b9··on How big is YouTube?
Did you understand where the 2^64 came from in their explanation btw? I would have thought it would be (64^10)*16 according to their description of the string.

Edit: Oh because 64^10 * 16 = (2^6)^10 * (2^4)

That's not true. Reactions on comments were implemented long before the acquisition. And people still did +1.

On the other hand, what they didn't have was search locked behind a login screen.

The irony of this statement seems to be lost on you.

I've never met a consultant who seemed useful and I've met many from the big 4 so in that regard GPT measures up.

I thought about that as well, many articles are controlled by a little clique of opinionated and partisan moderators. It'd be good if there could be forks of certain pages in which certain viewpoints are being suppressed.

ad404b8a372f2b9··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
(Sorry I edited my comment before I saw your reply.)

That doesn't seem very useful for the metrics shown in that article. For hard to find bugs sure, for 95th percentile calculations and so on you can just buy a few computers at a retail store and get the same information.

ad404b8a372f2b9··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
I don't think that data gave them anything more than what testing on a few consumer computers in different price ranges would have.

(Edited, original comment read: "What more information does that give them than just buying a few computers at different price points?")

ad404b8a372f2b9··on Global CO2 Levels
It does not convey less information, it conveys accurate information. At the scale of the x-axis, the viewer can see that it was always at 280 so no information is lost. No information is added by breaking the scale, if you want to convey standard deviations, add a secondary axis.
ad404b8a372f2b9··on Global CO2 Levels
It's not a good thing because people have no intuitive understanding of ppm, unlike temperature. PPM can only be judged according to another measure (second y-axis) or in comparison to itself, in which case you want the comparison to be accurate. That means making a graph that starts at 0 so the ratio is self-evident by eye, here it presents an 8-fold increase instead of a <2-fold increase.
ad404b8a372f2b9··on Critically Acclaimed Horror Film of the 2010s or Your PhD Program?
You should spend ten minutes on Gab and see what tropes they have there. Hopefully they won't make you go "hmmm..." like the contemptible white male trope does.
ad404b8a372f2b9··on Critically Acclaimed Horror Film of the 2010s or Your PhD Program?
I was trying not to spoil too much but the demon Paimon is a demon not a mediocre white man, the supposedly contemptible white male dies in pain and horror and his body is then used against his will, hardly a triumph.
ad404b8a372f2b9··on Critically Acclaimed Horror Film of the 2010s or Your PhD Program?
It was going so well before the sexist and racist shoehorning of 9, especially considering the whole plot of Hereditary is that the matriarch's goal was to murder and sacrifice her entire family.

Hmm that's any piece of connected software on the internet though. Shutting down instagram wouldn't compromise that.

That looks cute, it's too bad they don't show some of the pages. I think I'll buy something in the same vein, thanks for the idea.
ad404b8a372f2b9··on Ask HN: How do I start teaching my 1.5yo nephew math?
Obviously said in jest, and followed by the whole disclaimer "I already have an array of non-math related, age-appropriate toys and I don't have high expectations" for people who have a hard time recognizing humour that I knew would come.

I spent 20 minutes looking for a copy online before realizing your link had one haha. Thank you, it's very cute, I'll print it and see if he takes to it. He has a lot of pop-up books that he adores so even if he doesn't get it I'm sure he'll be entertained.

So far no smartphone for him thankfully.

The Pythagoras thing is interesting, I'll look into it. His mom bought him a Kalimba so he has an interest in music already, maybe it'll play into it.

I bought him Spintronics in the same vein but I have to wait 7 years to gift it to him :D

Nothing in my post suggests I intend to do otherwise. You have given me no useful information.
