You got to pay somewhere - either for the premium or for the ads. Nothing is really free in this world.

> Now we've got an entire app platform that works on the lion's share of PCs/servers in a small 1mb file.

Isn't that what Docker set out to do using containers and IMO was hugely successful? How is this different?

Call me old, but I cannot look beyond vi/vim for an editor. A few years ago I had to edit a text file that was 9GB in size. It took a while to open it in vim, but once it was open, it was no different than any 2kb file. No other editor was able to even open the 9GB text file.
adictator··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
You are ignoring the extremely detailed recording of history in the Indian subcontinent. Events, including the kings/queens that ruled over the Gangetic plains, their sons & lineage, wars, migrations, volcanic eruptions, weather changes (floods, earthquakes etc) have been VERY meticulously recorded as Itihāsa - Sanskrit for "It so happened". This goes back to at least 27,000 years before present - firmly placing the Indian subcontinent as the root of all of current human civilization. Why would you ignore such a vast & undeniable evidence, unless your "recorded history" is deemed to be Greek centric and not universal? That is hardly history!!
adictator··on Show HN: How did I live without Pipe Watch?
We use a log aggregator and watch logs from hundreds of servers in a searchable & filterable interface like Kibana. We also use Loki and Elastic extensively. If you have money to spend, I think you'd be looking at Splunk or Datadog.

As a matter of fact, we do not have SSH access to our servers. Everything happens over a web interface that has been secured.

I think it's easy to make anything better than the super buggy mint.com.

adictator··on Indian cows and buffaloes are going online
Never refer to wikipedia for anything even remotely connected to India. The cabal of Wikipedia editors responsible for content related to India is extremely prejudiced against India.
adictator··on Ask HN: What kind of online tools are you using, missing or can be improved?
I use https://nimbletext.com/live to generate/convert commands from/to csv etc. It has been extremely useful for my regular work.
adictator··on Ask HN: What kind of online tools are you using, missing or can be improved?
I use mint.com to consolidate all my financial details. But it is so buggy. Every time I access it seems to generate all stats from scratch, which means that it has no idea about accounts I have closed, renamed, moved etc.

Isn't that the same as Prānayāma in Yoga & Ayurveda? Even today you can find many yogis in the frigid Himalayas sitting almost naked in meditation pose. These yogis have gained supreme control over their Prāna. Prāna is roughly the same as breath, but really there is no English equivalent to the word.

The tragedy is that many Hindus / Indians themselves ridicule this ancient science in Ayurveda, Yoga etc, but when the same is circulated back in English or foreign context, they accept it & in many cases without asking for any evidence whatsoever. It shows a very low esteem on the part of some Indians. Why, it is not very clear.

adictator··on The perpetuation of bonded labor in Pakistan
The British thought that India suffered from the same casteism as Christianity (& Abrahamic religions) in other places, so they tried their best to retrofit Indian society into that model. But they could find no evidence of casteism, so they were forced to artificially make up many "castes" & grouped people based on occupation etc. The people who could not be fitted into any castes were called a tribes, which are now known as scheduled tribes & castes. Otherwise there should have been just 4 castes according to every tenet of Hinduism. Unfortunately, Indians & the GOI have formalized that artificiality & that is the genesis of the caste system. Caste system is nothing but an invention of the British. Caste itself is a Portuguese word, nothing that correlates to Indian / Hinduism.
adictator··on The perpetuation of bonded labor in Pakistan
That is not correct. Caste system never existed in India, at least not in the same or anti-humane form as in Islam - like Sunni, Shia, Ahmediyas etc. Caste system was an invention of the British & magnified to exponential proportions.

We absolutely love Alpine, but it's been hard to integrate with other systems because of it using musl. For instance, our dns resolvers do not work properly & our monitoring solution is incompatible with musl.

> But refused to support any RedHat-based images running on their engine.

You seem to have gotten that mixed. It was RedHat that refused to support anything (including their RHEL based images) on the docker platform unless it was run on the Red Hat's franken docker. It was RedHat that chose to not play fair, not Docker.

adictator··on How India’s massive 2019 election will work
The world's largest democracy & arguably the best.

Almost anything that India does, even marginally successfully, is done at a scale that is incomparable to anything in the world.

adictator··on Ask HN: What do you use Machine Learning for?
Not me, but a friend of mine heads a company that uses drones to identify defects / damage on containers. He uses ML to process the images captured by the drones, which is fed through an ML processor to detect such damages & flag them for insurance claims purposes.
adictator··on Ask HN: What password manager do you use, and why?
I use Lastpass because I believe it is as user friendly as it can get. They did have a security incident a few years back, but the way the handled it & the transparency & humility they showed was enough for me to trust in them. Please read about it. Also it is free. The mobile version is not free.
adictator··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
>a significant amount of people do not have confidence in the impartiality of the investigations

Generally, you would be right in assuming that. But in this case, Modi was in quite a vulnerable situation, when the primary opposition party (Congress) was in power in the central government at that time; they even had CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) in their control, there were too many international parties out to dig up evidence and accuse him (which they did, sans evidence). But at the end, not one charge stood up. In other words, he was proven innocent multiple times against all odds. The Visa ban was also overturned without a whimper, in fact Modi & Obama became such good friends....

adictator··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
If he said "Sorry" the scumbags would say "See, he said 'Sorry', obviously he's guilty", if he does not say "Sorry", the remaining scumbags say "He did not even say 'Sorry', he needs to take responsibility"!

If you think people can't see through such antics as you're playing, you are really deluded & grossly underestimate the general intelligence of humans!

adictator··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
> scumbags

Key operative word.

adictator··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
The commenter is deluded and does not care for facts. This case has been running in prime coverage for the last 10-12 years because almost everybody took an interest in it, because they wanted to "Get Modi". Many inquiries were setup, including special task forces, commissions, many US & European based NGO's in the guise of missionaries came to India searching for mass graves, he was banned from getting a Visa to enter the US, the supreme court in India held multiple hearings etc. After all that, he was deemed innocent. This shows that there is plausible evidence that the commenter was not serious, & in fact a troll or he was absolutely clueless, yet does not & cannot resist from accusing someone of being a "mass murderer". So there, that's the joke! You can't get more serious than that about this situation.
adictator··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
WTF man! Just because people do not agree with you, they become "insecure"? Unless you have been living under a rock or deep inside a cave you should know that almost every political party in India as well as many international NGO's, including our very own Hillary Clinton were out to "Get Modi". There were at least two Special Task Forces (STFs) that said there is no evidence of Modi being involved in the killings. He was the CM at that time, that was his only fault. The Courts in India have given him a clean chit, this was when he was a mere CM, at a time when the Congress party was in power. I mean, you got be really dense...

And what's with the 'was'? Just because you claim someone "was" a mass murderer, you can absolve yourself when every known & serious inquiry against him proves otherwise? Please try to be objective & analytical. Look up facts. Just because you like things to be a certain way does not make it so. Try to understand the divisive politic people play, but their best hands couldn't prove what was false.

I meant it seriously - if anyone can prove that he is guilty, go and make your case. Stop being a keyboard warrior!!

adictator··on Why many Indian politicians have a criminal record
> In fact even the prime Minister modi was on a mass murdering case of Gujarat 2002. He was the chief minister when the riots Happened!! That guy has still not even apologized or said sorry to the families whose people were killed.

I think you should stop whatever you are doing and get appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court of India. Obviously you know so much more than what they know or have deduced about criminals in India, much less the PM.
