Met the founder of a startup accelerator in Singapore and shared my idea. His first question - "will it be a billion dollar company?" I said no but has the potential to scale to a few million dollars and his reply was - "then its not a startup but just a lifestyle business."

The intent is faster speed, greater independence and run like leaner startup. Also, additional career paths for employees, especially for the senior folks aspiring to be CEO.

Seems like a productized service opportunity - post, manage, & review technical projects on elance/odesk for non-technical folks.

A friend had lower back pain which almost made it impossible for him to sit more than 10-15 minutes. He couldn't run or even bend forward. He switched to a standing desk (nothing fancy - just a big box on top of his regular desk) and started freestyle swimming. Its over a couple years now - he can run at 4-6 mph (no sprinting) and even bend half-way forward. Hope that helps.

It depends on the data you are trying to extract. If you want backlink data, most of it is available in GWT, Bing, and Webmeup. If you are planning to identify opportunities & do competitive analysis, both Majestic SEO & SEMRush are fantastic.

You will be surprised by the amount of time people take to work seriously on fixing their penalty.

I have helped over 40 websites recover from Google penalty in the last 7-8 months. 80% of the websites seek help only after they have screwed up atleast one reconsideration request without taking the necessary steps.

Google typically responds to penalty reconsideration requests within a week, often less than a week. So if you have taken the right action and have submitted a really solid reconsideration request, its totally possible to get out of a penalty in under 2 weeks. Also, the backlink count was under 200K which is a reasonably manageable.

Rap Genius could have saved some time using tools like scrapebox to perform some of the scraping activities. But thats another story.

I have helped sites with over 2 million backlinks and got them out of manual penalty in under 3 months in very competitive verticals like travel & finance.

It entirely depends upon the scope of penalty. Unless you are completely deindexed from Google search results, you can always recover from a penalty.

Great tips already! I have been working from home for the past year or so. In between got into the habit of spending time on HN, reddit, techmeme and was kind of addicted to random browsing. Went on like this for 3 months. The lack of any real output hit me after that and ended up taking the following steps. Not perfect but have helped me come a long way.

What works for me:

1) Create a separate work profile on my mac.

2) Block sites you think are not helping you in your work but eating into your time.

3) Write down just one big action item for the day (has to be done today)

How is it any different from offline world of business? Seems like big businesses with resources always go that extra mile to compete with other big businesses. The small businesses are usually the collateral damage.
