aepstein··on Advice for New Managers and AMA with Aaron Epstein of Creative Market
Hey HN! Aaron here. I hope you find this post helpful, and happy to answer any questions!
aepstein··on Common Misconceptions About Applying to YC
I've recommended teams that have been accepted, and recommended teams that have been rejected. It's really just another data point to consider, not a golden ticket.

And it certainly can't hurt to network with YC alumni, for reasons beyond just getting a rec.

aepstein··on Common Misconceptions About Applying to YC
Ultimately what you want to do is de-risk the potential investment by showing that you have significant traction, and having actual paying customers is a great way to do that.
aepstein··on Autodesk Acquires CreativeMarket
Wow, thanks Sean. That really means a lot to hear.
aepstein··on How to make your YC application stand out
Yes and no. In my situation (OP), I had about a month to find a place for my wife to live in NYC (until I got there after YC), find a place for our team to live in SF, and find someone to rent the place we owned in the DC area. And it all worked out. Sometimes the time constraints can be a good thing.
aepstein··on Show HN: I want to work at Rap Genius, so I made this.
FYI: cofounder's name is "Mahbod", not "Maboo".
aepstein··on Mailgun (YC W11) is being acquired by Rackspace
Congrats guys! Great service and well-deserved, we're big fans (and customers).

aepstein··on More than Money... Matter.
Reminds me of Dharmesh Shah's talk at SXSW where he shared the-one-metric-to-rule-them-all that they developed at HubSpot to measure success for everyone on the team (from sales people to developers): CHI (Customer Happiness Index).

The concept is that everything the business does should be focused around the goal of increasing customer happiness, and this single metric aligns everyone's motives around the goal.

aepstein··on Free beautiful UI elements for developers
We did :) Thanks for your feedback rurounijones, we're listening.
aepstein··on Work at a Startup 2012
Nope, you're not missing anything. Startup teams are so small that everyone on the team has to be able to add value by creating something tangible. There's no room for middle-management.
aepstein··on Mailgun Campaign Analytics: taking analytics beyond bulk email
We've been using Mailgun for the last couple months at COLOURlovers to manage and analyze our weekly newsletter campaigns (400k+/week) and handle our transactional email. Easily worth every penny, and the support from Taylor and Ev has been fantastic.
aepstein··on [dead]
"DidThis makes it easy to spread micro-actions that are fun or useful to as many people as possible around the world."

I think that messaging does you a disservice. How many people are going to hit your site and say "Finally! An easy way to spread micro-actions!" (what are micro-actions anyway?)

How about appealing to ego: "Use DidThis to tell the world what you've done and encourage others to join you."

aepstein··on "I haven’t been drunk in 3 years... and I’ve been partying way more than you."
As his co-founder, I can assure you he doesn't push his "policy" on anyone else. Far from it. It's more a philosophy of being present for every moment, and living life to the fullest.

And pretty sure he was the one that bought a bottle of champagne for our team to celebrate the end of our adventure through YC...just he didn't drink any.

aepstein··on YC NYC, September 26
I'm from the DC area (now living in NYC), and all of my DC tech friends went into consulting. No one even considered a startup.

I'd love to see a great startup culture grow around the DC area, but NYC is light years ahead at this point. DC makes it too easy to be conservative.

And COLOURlovers has been around since Dec 04.
aepstein··on Colourlovers Raises $1 Million To Make Everyone An Artist
Oh, and we're hiring and we'd love to work with you! http://clrlv.rs/workwithcl
aepstein··on Colourlovers Raises $1 Million To Make Everyone An Artist
Yup, it's still our legal parent company name, but we found that when we told people we were CHROMAom they said "huh?", and when we said we were COLOURlovers they said "I know COLOURlovers!"
aepstein··on Colourlovers Raises $1 Million To Make Everyone An Artist
We were actually YC W10 :)

aepstein··on The betrayal of Bntr
- "Bnter was so star-struck by Spark"? I've never heard of entrepreneurs being star-struck by investors.

- 4 months of due diligence? Many rounds are dead if they drag out past 2 months.

- "Only then did it occur to the Spark team to check with Tumblr founder David Karp to make sure he wouldn’t view this as a competing company"? This is usually step 1 of the due-diligence process. Things like this don't just randomly "occur" to professional VC companies.

There are so many odd things in this article, I'm not sure if it's just Sarah Lacy embellishing with her writing, or what...

aepstein··on Show HN: RepoPlay - Instant replay for repo commits (+looking for internship)
For anyone living outside The Valley, looking to break in and get a job on the inside, this is how it's done. Show people what you can do - your work is your resume.

Mikito, I'm sure you're sorting through a bunch of potential internships right now. Way to go.

aepstein··on Sequoia To Color Labs: Not Since Google Have We Seen This
People-focused businesses can scale with more people, but they're trying to get more people to use an app.

If they keep getting killed in their App Store reviews, no amount of employees or money will speed up adoption.

aepstein··on Sequoia gives photo-sharing startup more money than they gave Google
"Bill recently acquired the domain color.com for $350K" according to Steve Thommes in the TC comments.
aepstein··on Seeing Interactive (YC W10) Changes Name To OwnLocal, Launches Deals Network
Love the new concept. My mom gets frustrated that the Groupon deals aren't truly "local", and that makes her want to unsubscribe. You guys are in a great position to solve this. Congrats Lloyd, Jason & Jeremy.
aepstein··on Pic A Fight: Instagram meets FaceMash
Chad, you are a machine.
aepstein··on Ask HN: Good app ideas to learn a new platform
Nice. Looking forward to seeing the prototype next time we meet up :)
aepstein··on Ask HN: Good app ideas to learn a new platform
How about something for Hackruiter? Using your API? Plot all companies on a map? Contact form to sign up to meet you guys? Some type of programming-challenge checker?
aepstein··on Ask HN: How to pursue an unadvertised/nonexistent internship?
The best way to get their attention is to build something in Python that they would be interested in.

For example, do they have an API? If so, build off their API. Make a cool related service. Make a microsite. Develop a prototype of some technology/algorithm that would be useful in their business.

Forget resumes/shadowing/etc, just take the initiative to build something they will notice and love, and you'll have an instant connection.
