ajacksified··on Intel puts 1nm process (10A) on the roadmap for 2027
Same thing with hardware in every company I've worked at. Really, "Sr. Staff Engineer Alice" makes $300k/yr, but only gets a budget of $2k for a laptop that's meant to last four years and is their primary tool? How does this make sense?
ajacksified··on Mushroom pickers urged: Avoid Amazon foraging books, appear to be written by AI
Hot takes aside, if you're looking for great foraging books, I'd suggest anything by David Arora, such as "All That the Rain Promises and More" and "Mushrooms Demystified". The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms is, of course, pretty good too.

Outside of identification, "Chanterelle Dreams, Amanita Nightmares" and "Radical Mycology" are good reads too.

ajacksified··on Google Removes ‘Pirate’ URLs from Users’ Privately Saved Links
Let's go ahead and ban pen and paper, typewriters, email, and unregulated verbal speech too, to make sure they aren't avenues for sharing pirate urls.
ajacksified··on Imgur Updates TOS, Banning NSFW Content
Exactly. I'm pointing out that what gp says:

> It may end up having a much larger impact than reddit corporate anticipates.

Is unlikely. I'm not adding an opinion on whether or not this is a good move, or a user-friendly move.

ajacksified··on Imgur Updates TOS, Banning NSFW Content
"reddit corporate"? Like Steve, who was the original founder and is the current CEO, or Alexis, another original founder, who is the executive chairman?

There is absolutely zero way they're unaware of the impact and I guarantee you they have thought this move through thoroughly.

ajacksified··on Best D&D map makers for dungeons, cities and worlds
Do you have a link to any of these models? I was just wondering if any existed a few days ago.
ajacksified··on Tim Berners-Lee: Web3 is not the web
Hi, I work at Inrupt (Tim's company.) Here's two recent examples:

The BBC just announced that they're hosting Solid Pods for personal data, allowing users to control access to their information[1][2].

The government of Flanders is hosting Solid Pods for citizen data[3].

Solidproject.org is a community-led project, but I'd recommend trying out going through our docs at https://docs.inrupt.com under "getting started" if you'd like to play around with it. Feel free to let me know if you have any issues or questions.

ajacksified··on Ask HN: What Happened to the Reddit IPO?
Yup, this. I see how my statement was ambiguous.
ajacksified··on Ask HN: What Happened to the Reddit IPO?
When I built reddit's mobile website, I refused to add any mobile ads - I told the product owner that they could buy ads like anyone else. Literally the week after I quit, they added in mobile ads. lol

At some point recently they changed it to ask you every time you visit. There used to be an option to disable the mobile app ads. Funny that that's the only thing they've changed in six years (I left late 2016.)

ajacksified··on Zitadel: The best of Auth0 and Keycloak combined
FYI your docs are broken - I can't scroll down on anything (such as https://docs.zitadel.ch/docs/guides/authentication/login-use...)

Chrome 101.0.4951.64 / MacOS 12.4

Very curious though as I've been doing a lot of OIDC work at Inrupt.

ajacksified··on Launch HN: Litebulb (YC W22) – Automating the coding interview
Not only that, but this is an interview question. It isn't helpful at all to judge the quality of code in isolation; nobody's going to write perfect code in an interview setting, especially one in which the candidate can't have a conversation with the interviewer. When I conduct code interviews with candidates, we pair on projects. The candidate is asked to complete the task without regards to how clean the code is. We then have a conversation afterwards about how to clean things up, solve for complex cases, etc. It's much better signal to talk through these things to get the candidate's insight than it is to just get a chunk of code at the end that may-or-may-not meet the linting guidelines of my company.

I've interviewed hundreds of engineers in the last twenty years. I've been (and am) a hiring manager for many of them. I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole, and I'd run away as a candidate if my git commits were being judged as part of a coding interview.

These "metrics" are for conversation, not for automated "judgement."

ajacksified··on Show HN: Supernotes 2 – a fast, Markdown notes app for journalling and sharing
> A free tier with unlimited cards but no sync/local only, could help to get users into seeing value.

Quite the opposite, for me. Local storage is far more valuable.

ajacksified··on Cheese Making
I've been brewing beer and mead for a decade, so I'm used to issues of contamination - although it's very hard to make yourself sick with beer. Worst case, it tastes bad and you have a little bit of gastrointestinal distress, but cheese is a different beast!

I have friends who raise goats, and it sounds like it's time to give them a call. I'll err on the side of safety and read more on home pasteurization. Thanks for the info!

ajacksified··on Cheese Making
Thank you for all the information- your username checks out!

Re: "don't make cheese with raw milk. You'll regret it." If the only non-homogenized milk I can find is raw, is it safe to home-pasteurize it (63C for 30 mins,) or am I better off using the homogenized stuff?

I've only made ricotta and mozzarella so far, but I've been thinking about diving into hard cheeses soon. I was just talking to my partner about cheesemaking over the weekend, so a random cheesemaking article on Hacker News is rather serendipitous...

ajacksified··on Is the four-day workweek finally within our grasp?
I'm not surprised you made a throwaway to hide behind, because not only are you a coward, but this is the worst take I've ever seen on a website full of terrible takes. I can't imagine working for someone with this point of view, and I'll happily say that, on the record, without a throwaway account.

As an engineering manager- an actual one- I'm not paying for hours, I'm paying for output. I couldn't care less if my employee was working 15 hours or 40, as long as they got an appropriate amount of work done for my investment in them.

Are we praising someone for demanding itemized timesheets? How absolutely toxic.

ajacksified··on Solidjs – JavaScript UI Library
See also: https://github.com/inrupt/solid-ui-react, and the `https://github.com/inrupt/solid-client-*-js` names under Inrupt. (I helped build most of them!)

I can already imagine the naming discussions if we were to build a Solid library for Solidjs. "Solid-ui-solidjs"? "Solid-client-solidjs-js"? Oh boy. We're currently using React for most things, but I could imagine switching to this if it takes off... that's going to make following conversations very confusing, haha.

Now that I say that and I've clicked around, I wonder which is canonical: "Solidjs", "SolidJS", or "Solid.js"? I've seen it all three ways.

ajacksified··on We killed our end-to-end test suite
I loled that you were downvoted, I was going to post the same thing - they discovered multiple layers of testing? Congrats?
ajacksified··on You don't need a math PhD to play Dwarf Fortress, just to code it
It does not take a PhD to download the Lazy Mac Pack. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=158322.0

You can even get it as a Brew cask.

ajacksified··on Launch HN: Hera (YC S21) – macOS app to prepare, join and take notes in meetings
I was super excited until I saw this; I guess I'll have to wait. Offline storage is essential for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the ability to reach my notes if Hera is having an outage.
ajacksified··on One week of Libera Chat
Good usecase for Solid (https://solidproject.org/).
ajacksified··on Snyk: Find and fix vulnerabilities in open-source dependencies
I'm not convinced their tools are better than npm audit + a license checker package, although I suppose it's nice if you want a dashboard that works for many languages instead of just Node.

I've been very disappointed with their PR tools, and ended up turning off their automated PRs on _their suggestion_. (They will create dozens or hundreds of PRs to update dependencies, rather than rewriting them. Dependabot is 100x better to work with.)

ajacksified··on How I cut GTA Online loading times by 70%
They didn't fix it. I tried a few days ago, because it's a really fun game... except for these seemingly easy to fix issues that are huge barriers.
ajacksified··on Is this the endgame? System 76 Serwal – AMD and pop!_OS
They offer both Ubuntu and pop! os; I don't think it's fair to ask for more distros. If you want Mint, just install Mint. An install of Ubuntu 20.04 for me required zero configuration on a new Oryx Pro 16" that I bought a few months ago.
ajacksified··on The new Microsoft Edge is out of preview
I was going to install it to try it out, but this was the dealbreaker for me.
ajacksified··on Etcher tracks user data without consent
To be fair, most (possibly all?) software has a "automatically check for updates?" checkbox, which would solve the author's issue, if it's just an update check.
ajacksified··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
I just got the same copy sent to me. Our collective rage is working
ajacksified··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
Sent an email this morning. Will update if I get a response.
ajacksified··on Dell bets big on Ubuntu Linux laptops for developers
Just bought an X1 Extreme gen 2, and immediately upgraded (aftermarket) to 64GB of RAM and 2x 1TB M.2 drives. Feels pretty good. Ubuntu install was very smooth. The only thing I hate is the super cheap-feeling keyboard.
ajacksified··on Dell bets big on Ubuntu Linux laptops for developers
fwiw, I just bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 and Ubuntu 19.10 worked right out of the box - even wifi and proprietary nvidia drivers. I was very surprised. I haven't tested the fingerprint scanner, but I don't use biometrics, so I can't speak to that.
