ajcodez··on Cannabis is legal in Canada: What you need to know
It could be a head start towards concentrating cannabis ownership in Canada, similar to mining. Voters also appreciate progressive changes. Good move by the government.
ajcodez··on Stellar Smart Contracts
Why would you ever agree to pay legal or transaction fees greater than $0.30? It makes a new class of agreements possible where settling in court is not practical. It also brings increased transparency.

If you could get insured for software agreements using off the shelf open source software that already worked for lots of other people why not go for it? How is that worse than custom agreement and settlement via chains of private 3rd parties with opaque fee structures.

ajcodez··on The New Atlanta Billionaires Behind the Unlikely Tech Unicorn MailChimp
It is severely limiting. You can’t sell private shares on the open market to buy a condo, pay off college debt, invest in your own company, quit and travel the world, etc. It could be decades before you receive the full share value. If hypothetical employee is working full time it’s probably because they don’t have enough assets 2M+ to live off passive income and need to work. Let’s say they are frugal and save $40k per year. If you have comp like a public co and receive $40k+ per year in shares does it really make sense to have 50%+ of your net worth in a single private tech company? It would probably work out great but 10 years is a long time to wait. I’m pretty sure there is issues with tax too but I don’t know the math.
ajcodez··on The New Atlanta Billionaires Behind the Unlikely Tech Unicorn MailChimp
“Also shares keep on producing income after you have left a company.”

If I was making $120k per year working at MailChimp the last thing I would want is 30% or more of my net worth tied up in private shares. What employee wants that much exposure? It’s a private tech company with no plans for liquidity potentially ever.

ajcodez··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a junior software developer?
Also - Learn how to set up and configure servers not just how to write code but how to run code and keep it running. If you know how to use basic programs like SSH and NGINX it can only help you.

Also - I have been coding for 10 years now (as of September). It’s interesting to see as I gain experience the biggest differences looking back are (1) I choose to use more git branches and release 1:10 ratio smaller commits. (2) I try not to ever go back to “refactor” or clean up code and instead spend time on changes to accomplish the next feature or bug fix. (3) I never plan ahead and think “what happens if ...” instead focus on the present. In reality the future often never comes or it looks different than expected.

ajcodez··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a junior software developer?
Learn sales, marketing, design, basic accounting. Basically learn everything tangential so you know why you are writing code not just how to write code. It’s a means to an end. It could be as simple as reading books or as intense as taking online courses.
ajcodez··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
I was using DuckDuckGo for a day or two due to Google latency issues. I’m would check again in a couple days to make sure it’s permanent growth.
ajcodez··on Amazon's Bezos Launches $2B Fund to Help the Homeless
I see some parallels with aid sent to Africa. Charitable giving can alleviate suffering short term with the side effect of perpetuating suffering long term.

> Aid [to Africa] is an unmitigated political, economic and humanitarian disaster.

ajcodez··on Why I never finish my Haskell programs
Yeah it’s the cons operator so it matches the first element (head) of the list and next elements (tail). It would need a reverse and reverse back to work correctly.

reverse (addup (reverse a) (reverse b))

ajcodez··on Tinder founders sue parent companies Match and IAC for at least $2B
It’s actually a well researched business case study and in the case of Tinder carried out perfectly. It’s too hard for existing company to disrupt itself because it takes too long for the new venture to make a significant difference to the bottom line, the value chain and company structure is too entrenched, the standard for excellence is too high for a nascent product or service. In business literature to avoid getting disrupted you’re supposed to set up a independent office far away and incentivize the “founding” team with upside and full autonomy and credit for success.
ajcodez··on America's first big offshore wind farm sets record low price
It sounds like they already did some kind of 20yr swap - 'a long-term power-purchase agreement had helped the wind farm “offer an attractive price” to consumers'
ajcodez··on A response about dep and vgo
Dep is awesome from the user perspective. You just type > dep ensure and it works and it’s fast.
ajcodez··on Facebook Makes Moves on Instagram Users
Same in Toronto. 22+ is Instagram only. A few years ago you would add each other on Facebook. Now it’s Phone or Instagram socially, Twitter in tech circles, LinkedIn in business circles. People over 30 yrs will add you on Facebook but nobody younger bothers anymore.
ajcodez··on Ask HN: As a team lead how to handle project going off the rails?
I would send upbeat emails at every milestone listing the accomplishments of your team. Throw in some tech speak to impress non tech people. By the time the deadline comes and passes anyone on the email thread will know how much your team has done and will trust you to finish the job.

I would also assign tasks or busy work as the deadline approaches to anyone who is waiting on you to launch. Have them beta testing, etc. People are a lot more patient when they have things to do and a lot less patient when they are just waiting for you to finish already.

ajcodez··on Employers will do almost anything to find workers except pay them more
Interesting. When I was in Mykonos last year my server was a registered accountant but made more bartending / serving than he would make in industry.
ajcodez··on Introducing A16Z Crypto
Individuals invested in crypto currency are excited about hard currency outside of the control of government policy. See “End The Fed” by Ron Paul.
ajcodez··on BitTorrent is selling for $140M to Justin Sun and Tron
Or this is one of those historic moments where human civilization enters a new phase of international value creation and value transfer with monetary policy forever decoupled from government. That is the crypto narrative. ICOs and security tokens used for international crowdfunding are part of that bottom up borderless future.
ajcodez··on React Native at Airbnb
I remember mid 2017 react native and the upgrade pain distinctly. It took a full week to set exact versions and run yarn outdated over and over, pull up the release notes one package at a time, try bumping the version, see if it breaks, try the next version, no that’s broken, try bumping react, no that breaks the other one, etc. It was hell.
ajcodez··on Why Invest in Cities? There's Always Another Boise
It’s easy to say “just move somewhere cheaper” but how do you put together a list of places? How many people who can’t afford rent can afford flying around the country trying out new cities? How do you find a new job if you don’t know anybody?

What companies are working on economic relocation? It sounds like something difficult and valuable.

ajcodez··on Wells Fargo Hit with $1B in Fines
Similar experience trying to send international wire. Totally clueless.
ajcodez··on We saved $50k/year with a Go microservice coded in a hackathon
It makes sense if each client gets to add their own fields.
ajcodez··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2018)
The position is filled. Thank you!
ajcodez··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2018)
Hi sah2ed! Thinkwire is built with React + TypeScript + Node on the front end and Go + PostgreSQL on the backend.
ajcodez··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2018)
Thinkwire | Toronto | Developer | Part-Time | REMOTE | $2-6K / month | https://www.thinkwire.com/

Thinkwire powers online events for B2B inbound marketing. We are bootstrapped and now have budget to start building a remote team.

Our culture is based on the 80/20 rule. Parents, digital nomads, founders consulting on the side are all welcome. Our team is skewed towards strategy and sales so developers with a focus on marketing and design would bring a lot of value.

ajcodez··on Airbus moves 130k employees from Microsoft Office to GSuite
I use Docs all the time. It's really nice to hear privacy is important to the team!
ajcodez··on Airbus moves 130k employees from Microsoft Office to GSuite
At a past consulting job the CEO claimed Google was reading his confidential information in the 00’s and refuses to use anything except Office 365. In his case confidence that MS will not act improperly is the most important feature.
ajcodez··on Ask HN: How to stop feeling depressed about whether you will be successful?
I used to feel intense self imposed pressure to succeed financially. I have yet to achieve that but I don’t think about the abstract concept of success and “swimming pools of money” anymore. What changed for me was moving cities and meeting new friends. It turns out I wasn’t happy with my life and making lots of money seemed like the best escape to something better. If you feel depressed I would recommend you expose yourself to new people by enrolling in a program or starting a new job. You’re one friend or relationship away from a life you wouldn’t trade for millions.
ajcodez··on Obesity and Overweight Prevalence for the U.S
It also sucks to frequently throw out spoiled produce. If you live alone or with roommates, go to restaurants, etc chances are nearly half the produce will go bad. It's not expensive so much as disheartening.
ajcodez··on Telegram plans multi-billion dollar ICO for chat cryptocurrency
Telegram is hugely popular in the cryptocurrency community to the point that multiple traders I know monitor Telegram community engagement as a primary indicator to bet on small cap coins.

Telegram founder is also big into cryptocurrency and owns a bunch of bitcoin [1]. I think after kik [2] and Status [3] this was inevitable.
