ajmurmann··on Personal software factories are a waste of time
I think he's right in that the software factory somewhat should emerge. You shouldn't start a project by saying "well, I first should build a software factory to make this faster". Start by building the thing by directing an agent. If you find yourself writing the same thing over and over put it into a skill which you should think of and treat as a macro. When you find yourself developing clear patterns what skill gets invoked when it might be time to start a software factory which in essence puts those decisions and relevant informations behind a pretty interface.

My software factory emerged that way and for the 50-70% of simpler tasks I work on this saves me so much time and, more importantly, mental overhead.

ajmurmann··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
The market doesn't pay more because we somehow discovered the person actually does more. That would only be the case if because of the discovery either more people decided to hire doormen or fewer people would be interested in becoming doormen.
ajmurmann··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
"The obvious strategy to manifest that would would be to pay them for what they actually do! That is remarkably easy to organise."

How? How do you set a price based on what someone does?

ajmurmann··on 90% of US working hours are spent on tasks not covered well by AI benchmarks
Nobody is paid for effort. Unless you cut down on supply of doormen or increase demand the comp won't change.

Unless Austin is ahead Waymos currently don't go in freeways anyways because the fail more of simply stopping isn't an option there

Have you considered all the jobs in the horse keeping industry when the automobile came around?
ajmurmann··on Tesla Roadster
The Brabham was withdrawn after one race because it sprayed debris at following cars. I the thrusters used for better cornering also might push a car being overtaken just enough to get it off track. Even for track-only this won't fly. Not to mention blasting pedestrians.
ajmurmann··on Lobbying is corruption
What do you mean "a problem that doesn't need to exist"? What's the specific problem you are thinking of?

Trade and especially the shared European market required industry input which you might call lobbying. Regulations had to be homogenized to create a level playing field. To attack what matters European law makers needed lobby input. This happens all the time on a smaller scale with trade agreements. Think of the famous chlorine-washed chicken in the US situation. If a country prohibits this their chicken industry might want a for-export exemption when a trade deal with the US is made.

You also have lobbying that could be seen as genuinely good. Insurance companies lobbied for a lot of car safety standards and fire safety standards. (That said I'm libertarian enough that I don't actually see enforcement of standards that protect the occupant by law as positive but most people do)

I'm a sucker for a captain (or anyone) who falls asleep with a good book on his chest. Even if it's fan service.

During the height of the pandemic I rewatched TNG. When Timescape opened with Picard, Data, Troy and Geordie on their way back to the Enterprise in a runabout and having dinner together. Having these characters I've known and lived for so long have a casual work meal made me miss office lunch so much I almost started to cry. No other show would have been able to do that

ajmurmann··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
It's called PPP and yes, it makes Europe look sightly better but it's still behind the US and that's for median household income not tech income.

I've managed staff all over the US and in Europe and have had access to large corporate pay scales across zones. The difference is so significant that CoL is a total rounding error for software developers.

ajmurmann··on Decisions API is in public beta
For every production use case I build a eval suite which I use for prompt tuning and model evaluation and config. How else do you establish your model and prompt combination works? How do you upgrade to a newer model or decide on a fallback?

This same suite can simply be run very handoff to switch to a new prod model.

I didn't like DSC and most of Picard either, just like you because it was too gritty. Although it certainly helped that TNG is by faaar my favorite of the Treks.

I liked that season 1 and 2 of SNW felt like the stakes were lower and there were fewer gimmicky episodes. The muppet episode for me for example was a huge negative. So was the fake documentary, the Event Horizon remake and of course the double episode where they were fighting manifested evil which to be couldn't be further from the Trek spirit.

IMO Star Trek is mostly dead anyways. The Orville was the best Star Trek in a very long time. Strange Worlds started so strong but season 3 and 4 really took a nose five r

ajmurmann··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
The pen example makes sense if the intermediary were to ship the pen as part of the final product but not if the pen is simply used to draft designs of the final product. It seems that this designation would prohibit using the pen anywhere in the process which doesn't really make sense.

Some political power is probably unavoidable, no matter the system and no matter the wealth distribution. We can do lots of things though to weaken that effect. Obvious options range from a simple campaign finance reform to more impactful things like sortition or election by jury.
ajmurmann··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
You are confusing money and wealth. We can all be richer. The vast majority today has riches that a medieval king could have never dreamed of. Exotic fruits year around. Magic devices. Healthcare that goes beyond anything medieval people could have imagined.

Yes, unlike economics, politics is zero-sum. The solution to that is to fix the political system, not to destroy the things that are working great.

I'm pretty certain Henry George would be very happy with pigovian taxes like a carbon tax as well.

Income tax it's definitely something he'd not prefer because it reduces incentive to do something we want you to do. Better to tax windfalls and undesirable things

If users value support so much, you should start a competitor with excellent support. I suspect though that very few users are willing to pay the additional cost.

We know that coding agents have been pushing GH to its limits. Scaling is hard - especially staff. Maybe they aren't trying to scale support but I think it's reasonable to give them the benefit of doubt here, given what we know publicly

Prioritization and escalation exists in most companies. I guarantee you that once an issue hits the HN front page, even engineers who might have totally different talks will get involved. (Never worked at GH or have talked to anyone there in years but this is how everything works pretty much everywhere)
