ajonnav··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Sorry, yes, you are right. It’s a similar analysis probably because Title VII is also grounded in the 14th Amendment.
ajonnav··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
The decision affects private entities that accept some form of federal financial assistance (this is language from Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act), not private entities writ large. Granted, that is still a big bucket.
ajonnav··on OpenAI is in talks for tender offer that would value it at $29B
They used to be a non-profit but changed their structure to a "capped" for-profit a couple of years back -- investor returns are capped at 100x.
ajonnav··on US Attorney Announces $3.36B Cryptocurrency Seizure in Connection with Silk Road
I just started law school so don't take this answer as definitive but a couple of things I thought of were: 1. For the statute of limitations, I believe that the time point to look at is when the lawsuit was filed (as opposed to when the guilty plea comes through). All that matters was that lawsuit was filed __before__ the statute of limitations ran out. 2. Additionally, there are scenarios where the law/courts will allow people to file suits after the statute of limitations runs out but that varies by jurisdiction and by the law that governs the crime committed. (For more info, you can check out equitable/statutory tolling).
ajonnav··on Testimony to House committee by former Facebook executive Tim Kendall
Tim Kendall also appears on the Netflix documentary, “Social Dilemma”. I would highly recommend giving it a watch.
ajonnav··on Journal raises $1.5M to bring Google-like search to your personal life
Would love an early access code too!
ajonnav··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
'Chasing Ice'! It's about a photographer (James Balog) who set up cameras in parts of Greenland, Iceland and Alaska to take time lapses of glaciers over the course of a couple of years. The images (and the difference that a couple of years makes) is astounding -- it truly is the most stunning visualization of global warming/climate change that I have ever seen.

And it's on Netflix.

ajonnav··on Ask HN: Can we add an “Outline” link for paywalls?
You should try the existing Outline chrome extension. After you install it, whenever you go to a paywalled site, all you have to do is click the Outline button in your menubar/taskbar and it takes you to the Outline link for that article.
ajonnav··on AT&T Cleared by Judge to Buy Time Warner
> The judge indicated during the trial that he wasn’t buying Shapiro’s projection. After his testimony, Leon said he was "confused." Further explanation from Shapiro didn’t help. "I’m not sure I got it, but it’s too late and too hot to belabor the point any further," the judge said.

Amazing on so many different levels.

(Shapiro is the economist whose model the DOJ based their case off of).

ajonnav··on Prediction of the FIFA World Cup 2018 – A random forest approach
Looks like Brazil did in 1958 and 1962.
ajonnav··on Can “effective altruism” maximise the bang for each charitable buck?
Yes you are right; I meant to say the Center for Effective Altruism.
ajonnav··on Neighbourly by Google
It's probably because (it looks like) the initial target market is India and India uses UK spellings.
ajonnav··on Can “effective altruism” maximise the bang for each charitable buck?
I would recommend checking out the podcast ‘The 80,000 hours’ if you are interested in this kind of stuff. It’s hosted by Rob Wiblin who is the executive director at Effective Altruism. He talks to very interesting people (mostly academics) about “the world's most pressing problems and how you can use your career to solve them” (taken from his website).
