ak39··on The US government is hiding secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
Wow. Does the US have this type of agreement with any other country?
ak39··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
This resonates 100% with me. I am tired too.

This is what I think is the solution - I've tried it a few times with good results.

1. We need our own project or task plan. A simple forward-thinking TODO list is good enough. This needs to be prepared before the day begins. Daily.

2. Focus and limit scope. Focusing on doing ONLY what's on the list is the discipline I (we) lack and which we need badly.

3. Side quests are killing us. Allowing ourselves to veer off the planned daily tasks should require a complete away-from-the-keyboard planning session with pen and paper. Print it out but plan it away from the LLM. Use the LLM to summarise the problem, by all means, but do the thinking away from the LLM. The current TODO list needs to be the main input of such a deliberation. The output is the new TODO list. The objective of this away-from-keyboard exercise is simply to maintain control of the next steps.

On days where I worked with my TODO lists, I clocked out and joined the family for activities, slept sooner and better. On days I lost control of that list, the exhaustion mounted almost on the same day.

Make a finite list for the day, tick it off and go spend time with the missus, the kids or the dog. 2c.

ak39··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
Yes, please provide examples.
ak39··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
Thank you for introducing me to the word "nerd-sniping"[1].

This is, as you say, exactly the paradox of having ourselves assisted by LLMs. We are no different from our cats. Except imagine the cats start making the laser lights for themselves.

ak39··on Ask HN: Where has creativity in software gone?
Similar, except I am so exhausted reading AI content on the web that I am now using wayback machine to read old articles before 2023.
ak39··on A Look Back: The Bloomberg Keyboard – Insights – Bloomberg Professional Services
The company with the widest moat. Unassailable. A virtual monopoly at this stage of the market data game. Is there even a market for "number 2"?
ak39··on Ask HN: Do you cuss at your agent?
I felt ashamed because it fooled me into believing it had feelings like a living thing.
ak39··on My Thoughts on AI and LLMs
In order to simulate true human like intelligence, we have to simulate digital dopamine. Desire. Autonomous desire. Until then it’s still a clanker.
ak39··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
This is a great analogy, thanks.

That means folks using LLMs starting off with 300 bits KNOW that they lack the full payload of information to transfer to you. IOW, they know they need to transfer much more than 300, so they use LLM to fill those gaps. That's the crux of the slop universe out there. Folks are using LLMs for the 700 bits on top of their 300 bits and passing off the full 1000 bits as their own.

I echo the writer's sentiment. "I don't want to read the clanker's 700 bits. I want only your synthesis." (I can get the clanker to generate those 700 myself. Unless ... unless this whole LLM slop market is all about saving you the time to get an LLM to generate those 700!)

ak39··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Using FF here, no such warning on my side. Likely your ISP?
ak39··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
Why hasn't anyone created a windows and mac client that git pushes changes to remote after file activities of local computer, and polls remote repo every 1 minute for changes to pull? I'd gladly pay for that. :-)
ak39··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
What is the point of any treaty with the current US administration which does not play by international laws? Rules and laws that the USA itself spearheaded after WW2.
ak39··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
"let them" in this use understood as: "let the while loop run indefinitely" as opposed to letting some autonomous robot decide for itself
ak39··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Quite correct with that question.

I believe the universal answer is: incompetent malicious actors are now capable too. Which implies the pool from which to draw the intersection between capable and malicious has grown. (That's my reading)

ak39··on SwiftUI After 7 Years
This type of story about management getting rid of the old guard is so common and typical, it remains one of the most frustrating aspects of this industry.

In the “enterprise scene”, this sort of purge strategy is likely linked to a big percentage of money wasted and sometimes total failure.

Why do managers keep making this mistake? “Legacy” is only a bad word in IT. :-(

ak39··on Don't Take the Black Pill [video]
Thank you for this.

(I think HN should consider creating TLDR type of comments for upvoting separately from commentary. @Dan incentivise with different karma credits?)

ak39··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
I read "man months".
ak39··on SQLite should have (Rust-style) editions
Off-topic: TIL wal2 mode in the works. Wow. That's a no-brainer feature, IMHO.
ak39··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests
Is the 300x performance boost attributable to the threading model vs process model?

Was the code for the threading model written by hand or was it translated from the WIP threading model the human PG team is busy with as part of the 2028 roadmap?

ak39··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests
Chuckled at the anti-climactic sentence ending! lol
ak39··on Cloudflare Drop
Unlikely. It goes further by also using the word "exploit".

If they needed permissions for conversion, they'd have made a specific mention of that and thereafter confirmed legal ownership.

ak39··on How the first solo-founder unicorn gets built
Genuine question: how did you figure this was AI generated? (If that is what you meant.)
ak39··on Show HN: I built a web framework in C
Nice.

Is if a one thread per request model?

Does it support async await type of architecture?

ak39··on How to Get Foreign Keys Horribly Wrong
By definition, a FK has to reference a PK in the “parent”.
ak39··on Writing GUI apps for Windows is painful
Same
ak39··on Xz: Can you spot the single character that disabled Linux landlock?
Shouldn't there be a unit test to confirm landlock is on/off? (I mean, this seems a crucial aspect of the code which needs 100% test coverage.)
ak39··on Xz: Can you spot the single character that disabled Linux landlock?
Yip, this was impressive. Only a copy & paste into VSCode (Windows) revealed the rectangle around the "c" in the second line.

Impressive.

ak39··on Inserting 100k rows 66 times faster
Thank you. Also, what database was in use?
ak39··on Interesting ideas in Observable Framework
Thanks for the easily understandable TLDR!
