alar44··on Living sound forever: The genius of Wendy Carlos
She was trans. Started as Walter Carlos.
alar44··on Generic dynamic array in 60 lines of C
Yeah that's a great opinion and all but generally C is used because it HAS to be used these days. No one is going to use this code for building a web application or will be tossing it into legacy code.
alar44··on 2D Liquid Simulator with Cellular Automaton (2017)
Not at all. Maybe if your fluid was magnetic Legos.
alar44··on Mexican jumping beans use random walk strategy to find shade: study
Ok? But it won't just converge to 0,0 because everything isn't equal and opposite, there will be some sort of bias that will move the bean away from it's origin.
alar44··on Mexican jumping beans use random walk strategy to find shade: study
In theory, using spherical cows, sure. But in practice there are all sorts of things screwing up the "probability" when jumping. Slope of the ground, windspeed, ground cover, etc.
alar44··on The Retreat of the Amateur Investors
Then you lost money due to inflation or the opportunity cost of it being somewhere where it could have made money.
alar44··on My 2022 self was wrong about meditation, monitors, and sleep
Yup exactly. Haven't really found self-awareness yet. Still thinking your GPA means something, you and your parents will live forever and life is going to be great.

I'm coming off super cynical now, but this just feels like the product of the Twitter/everyone is a blogger mindset and I don't like where it's leading us.

These "conversations" used to happen in bars and the 60 year old regular would laugh this greenhorn out. Now, people just tell their stupid thoughts into the void and pat themselves on the back for expressing their feelings like their therapist told them to.

End rant.

alar44··on My 2022 self was wrong about meditation, monitors, and sleep
That's what I'm saying.

I think I find these types of articles arrogant, or implying narcissism.

That he feels that anyone would find this tedium valuable is almost offensive to me lol. I'm just sick of seeing these kind of articles everywhere.

If there is something to be learned in your 20s, it's that you aren't special, your likely average, and your experiences aren't new or unique.

Live your life in your own way, but for YOURSELF, because no one gives a shit.

alar44··on My 2022 self was wrong about meditation, monitors, and sleep
Who is this? Why do I care? I'm sorry, but the amount of absolute tripe people post on the internet is absolutely baffling to me.

I don't give two shits about some 20 year olds ideas with absolutely no credentials. Who wants to read this crap? I don't get it.

alar44··on Windows 11: a spyware machine out of users' control
Registry values? It's pretty easy to tell Windows when to do updates. This is nonsense.
alar44··on Nintendo Will Pay Its Workers 10% More
If you think 90k is shit, you should really consider not living in NYC, LA, of SF. 90k in most non metropolis cities is upper middle class.
alar44··on Why Is Colorectal Cancer Rising Rapidly Among Young Adults?
The radio waves emitted by your phone are orders of magnitude lower than all the other background radiation you're basking in. This is a tech forum.
alar44··on Big data is dead
I mean, that makes sense does it not? If you're confirming something people already had a hunch about, why would they challenge it? And if it does go against their belief, they are going to want to make sure the data is correct before they change the course of the ship.
alar44··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
You can do this through any video conferencing platform. Or do we need to smell our coworkers for teamwork to work?
alar44··on Ghost boat with GPS leads father-son duo to man overboard
How dare a company advertise their features with an interesting story! Get a grip.
alar44··on Companies save billions of dollars by giving employees fake “manager” titles
It's not that simple though. I'm an IT Director. A good chunk of my time is just thinking and not doing. It's impossible to measure the amount of work I do in a day because I'm thinking about stuff when I shower, or am walking the dog etc. Do I sit at my laptop 8 hours a day? Fuck no. Do I work 8 hours a day? Probably, but it's hard to say. I can't say "I worked for 9.5 hours today" because it's impossible to measure.
alar44··on Companies save billions of dollars by giving employees fake “manager” titles
It's not and doesn't meet the minimum requirement for a salaried worker. I believe you need to make $48,500, or roughly $24ish/hr.
alar44··on U.S. credit card debt jumps 18.5% and hits a record $930.6B
Yeah it did, it's called basic math.
alar44··on Stop the proposal on mass surveillance of the EU
It's a great argument but way over the head of the average citizen. Most people are unable to think about things this way. The government and police are the good guys etc.
alar44··on Chat GPT is the birth of the real Web 3.0, and it's not going to be fun
Welcome to online dating since its inception.
alar44··on Analog computing may be coming back
That's false.
alar44··on The curse of the corporate headshot
Honestly with 15 minutes of reading on how to light a photo, anyone can take a headshot with a phone camera.
alar44··on Analog computing may be coming back
That's backwards. You mix, and then master to your format. When you master to vinyl, you inherently lose data because the needle will pop off the track if it's too loud or there's too much bass. You literally don't have to do anything like that when you master for digital. You just make it sound good and you're done.
alar44··on The curse of the corporate headshot
So say no? It's your photo, take control.
alar44··on Analog computing may be coming back
Probably, and they're wrong.
alar44··on Analog computing may be coming back
Fuck no. Vinyl is inferior to modern digital media in every single measurable way. I cannot believe this myth won't fucking die! You literally have to roll off the low end in a vinyl master so the needle doesn't pop off the track ffs. Not to mention the vinyl literally wears down every time you play the record.
alar44··on Analog computing may be coming back
No, synthesizers and guitar pedals are as much computers as a trumpet. "It translates the lip movement through the horn and amplifies the sound, thusly it's multiplying and therefore a computer!"

That is stretching the definition of a computer to absurdity, sorry.

alar44··on Analog computing may be coming back
You'd use an ADC.
alar44··on We ship the most code on Friday
Right, just write perfect code!

Things can and do break. It's impossible to test everything. That's why.

alar44··on Nim and Go programs identified by Carbon Black as malware on Windows
Sure, RTFA.
