alborzb··on Iranian hackers shut down UK power plant for 4 days
Actually if you read your own link - the BBC is just saying that the Telegraph reported this.

And the same BBC article says that the Telegraph reported it as "the power plant was shut down for four days", whereas on the other hand, the UK Government DESNZ said it only "affected a small-scale generator" not even an entire power plant.

It's always difficult in these situations to read through the FUD and see what the truth is.

alborzb··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
I'm not sure why you're being down-voted... But here's two credible sources:

Reuters estimates the deaths at 60,000 [ https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/how-many-palestini... ]

The UN estimates it to be at about 65,000 [ https://www.ochaopt.org/content/reported-impact-snapshot-gaz... ]

Neither of which are around 600 thousand as the previous commenter posted. The French News Channel called France24 did a quick video explaining the current fake news that certain NGOs are spreading with misleading death counts -- https://www.france24.com/en/tv-shows/truth-or-fake/20250624-...

alborzb··on Ireland will not participate in Eurovision if Israel takes part
It's interesting as it causes a divide amongst EBU members for Eurovision - besides Ireland (in OP), Iceland ( https://www.ruv.is/english/2025-09-09-iceland-may-not-take-p... ) and Spain ( https://www.theolivepress.es/spain-news/2025/09/11/spain-thr... ) have also stated their intention to boycott if Israel participates.

alborzb··on Airlines are charging solo passengers higher fares than groups
>> In all honesty all this thread is people complaining about something they don't have a clue about.

Considering that I saw the same uproar on 4 major travel blogs: Thrifty Traveller (who originally reported this), One Mile at a time, Enilria and View from the Wing.

I'd hardly call it people complaining about something they don't have a clue about.

This pricing practice of charging more for solo travellers is new, deceptive and even travel bloggers who are thought leaders are upset by this.

Revisionist History like this fascinates me.

It is very well documented, with written texts, witnesses and even a handful of photographs that the Wright brothers had functional manned aircraft 3 years prior in 1903...

Yet I've personally seen Romanian postal stamps that credit Vuia with "the first flight" for him managing to jump just 11m (36 ft) in a plane.

alborzb··on Over 90% of US Population Growth Since 2020 Came from Hispanics
Let's set the record straight. Here's an article that is well cited, with sources all linked within, from the Economic Policy Institute.

https://www.epi.org/blog/immigrants-are-not-hurting-u-s-born...

>>1) The unemployment rate for U.S.-born workers is the lowest rate on record ( 3.6% )

>>2) The rate of U.S.-born individuals aged 25–54 with a job is at its highest rate in more than two decades

>>3) Immigrants only make up 18.6% of the labor force.

By any metric you look at , it become obviously clear that immigration is not causing high unemployment among U.S.-born workers.

>> pcTattletale also offers a service called “We Do It For You,” which the company says will help install the spyware on the target’s computer on the customer’s behalf.

I can't answer most of your comment's questions, but to just answer the first point - it's about cost of labor.

Tata motors are made in India. BYD is Chinese. Both involved much lower cost of labor, both from the engineering perspective and the manufacturing too.

Heck, even Tesla themselves have a factory in China and from the most recent figures I could find, their Chinese built Tesla's are 40% cheaper than the American built Teslas -- https://financialpost.com/commodities/energy/electric-vehicl...

alborzb··on Seattle becomes first in U.S. to protect gig workers from sudden 'deactivation'
> "part time jobs should have to come with the same benefits as full time, by law."

All this does is eliminate more jobs.

In your hypothetical scenario, a company that hires 2 or 3 people part-time would need to do health insurance for each of them, benefits for each of them and the additional full-time equivalent paperwork for each of them...

In that scenario, the company would end up just hiring 1 person full-time for the hours, and have much less added overhead costs.

This would lead to higher unemployment, because now instead of 3 people being employed part-time, only 1 person is employed.

Where's the good in that? Maybe I'm just not seeing it from my perspective, if anyone else can chime in?

What on earth are you on about? "people like me" "evil right wing news" ?!

I have not referenced anything as either right or left wing. Nor did I mention anything of mine or anyone else's political leanings.

I cited my theory including several sources that show it to be factual that this television personality's employers gained several millions by causing the bank's share price to drop.

Yet you seem to be deploying personal attacks rather than finding fault with my core assumptions.

alborzb··on Austrian leader proposes enshrining the use of cash in country's constitution
>> recently a famous politician in the UK got de-banked partly out of his political views

As a person in the UK, who is fairly in touch with the media industry. This is such a non-story. I just want to do my bit to fight disinformation with the real information here :

That FORMER (not current) politician is a TV personality, who works for a TV channel called GB News [1]

GB News is directly managed by Paul Marshall, in a personal capacity (who also operates a hedge fund). [2]

That hedge fund took out short positions against the bank (which means they made bets that the banks share price would fall). In fact they had the largest bet ever against the bank, since records began of short positions. [3]

Coutts is a private bank that is exclusively for high net worth individuals [4]

The TV personality withdraw money from his Coutts account and fell below the minimum balance requirements needed for an account with this private bank (which is £1million or $1.3million in dollars) [5]

The TV channel then made a big splash by announcing that this man's account got closed due to his political positons, rather than the reality of his financial withdrawals. Which cause the banks share price to drop due to the negative media attention. This made a large profit for the hedge fund that had bet against the bank and was managed by the person who owns the TV channel that ran this story [6]
