alcima··on The FAA’s Hiring Scandal
Actually the source article is quite clear about the implementation of cronyism - friends were emailed the answers to the bizarre hiring test and others were not. It is typical behavior of machine politics - give good jobs to those who support you and block others from having them. Certainly the FAA did have DEI goals, but you can't attribute this patronage to them.
alcima··on The FAA’s Hiring Scandal
Was deeply aware of it at the time - was not really a DEI issue even then - it was pure cronyism.
alcima··on When It Comes to Entrepreneurs, Youth Isn't Everything
More than the longer hours it is the willingness to try things that failed before or are likely impossible.
alcima··on Microservices Ending Up as a Distributed Monolith
I think his point is that if ALL of your services have to use Guava (perhaps because you included some functionality that only Guava provides) then you have coupled your service to Guava. You can't use nodejs to build a service.
alcima··on Marc Andreessen just offended 1B Indians with a single tweet
Poorly phrased by pmarca, but seems certain he did not mean that India would be better off becoming a colony again. More likely he meant that some things associated with their successful anti-colonial efforts, such as "economic nationalism" and "license raj" have not worked out well for them. I don't know anything about Free Basics, so have no idea if it belongs in that category or not.
alcima··on Request For Research: Basic Income
Beyond just the amount, I hope your project delves into the issue of effective administration and levels of personal choice. For the first you can look at the recent bio identity cards and direct receipt of a basic income in rice in India. Radical decrease in societal cost and increase in personal benefit. For the second it is a question of where do I receive a basic income for - eg Tiburon or Temecula - and how is this decided and administered. For this consider the troubled hukou system in China.
alcima··on I believe in the 10x engineer, but
It isn't about the total intelligence - it is about the excess intelligence. If someone has to have a programming intelligence of 100 to do some job, you might only need a pi of 110 to be 10x them, not 1000. Very similiar concept to climb performance based on excess power in a twin engine airplane.
alcima··on Human-level concept learning through probabilistic program induction
Sorry I should have included the link in my post since I searched and found it.

alcima··on Human-level concept learning through probabilistic program induction
Seems like a good direction, seems more intuitive to me. Very classy that it is all in a github!
alcima··on Choose design over architecture
The most disconcerting thing about this nonsense is that it is on a government funded website.
alcima··on Ask HN: Why don't geeks care about climate change?
Most of us went to college and saw that Climate courses were where athletes were routed for an easy A.
alcima··on The unmanned aerial drones of WW2
Free flying ballons are not drones. I expected a link to real ww2 drones - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Aphrodite

Not many older than Jack Benny, but you wouldn't have been the only one.

alcima··on Kicked out of the US: 33 hours of hell
It does essentially have that question.
alcima··on Kicked out of the US: 33 hours of hell
False statements on a visa application is a federal offense and grounds for inadmissability. Presumably they clicked "no" to "have you ever been denied a visa" when in fact they had.
alcima··on Ask HN: How often does technical debt lead to the failure of a startup?
There is no "TASB" for appraising Technical Debt like there is an "FASB" for Financial. So most measures resemble the parable of the Six Blind Men and the Elephant.

Trade off an extra day to do each release versus 30 days to fix the release process? Trade off an extra week to add a feature versus a month to refactor and a month of customer turmoil on the refactored release? Trade off a month of getting complete test coverage versus saving two days on a future feature development?

My guess would be that the startup founders are doing a better investment calculation than it might appear to you.

alcima··on Project Orion (nuclear propulsion)
People forget that Kennedy's actual request was: First - "before this decade is out, is landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth"

Second - "acceleate development of the Rover nuclear rocket"

Third - "accelerate the use of satellites for world wide communications"

Fourth - "a satellite system for world wide weather observation"

Too bad we only got 3 out of 4 and are still stuck with cans of flammable mud.
