alecfreudenberg··on Man spends entire career mastering crappy codebase
Often times great ambition requires moral concessions that are untenable even in the face of the end result.

Politics is a helpful lens. Either you compromise and muddy the purity of the result, or you take the high risk path of being uncompromising and greatly reduce the odds of achieving any result at all.

When facing this, many individuals optimize for lower-risk self-fulfillment over great ambition.

alecfreudenberg··on The Mellotron, an electronic keyboard of recorded samples, changed pop music
John Medeski is a legendary jazz keyboardist who experimentally uses the tape speed to get extraordinary texture out of his OG mellotron.

He recently put out a great record called 'Mellotron Variations' with a few other artists that gives you a deep dive into its tonal qualities.

The modern digital mellotrons are so satisfying to play, especially with the instrument layering and mixing. Truly feels like like scoring an orchestra at your fingertips.

primarily air command, leveraging the sensor suite to operate non air-to-air tasks. it's an advanced systems ship that can use information and agility to complete most missions that don't involve pushing peak gs, velocity and circle radius.
alecfreudenberg··on Show HN: A ChatGPT TUI with custom bots
using GPT to define agents like this is such an exciting opportunity.

I'm looking forward to the stacked layers of agent + environment definitions that will really explode the ways we can interact with AI.

I'm working on a project to use GPT agents/scenarios for smart contract arbitration. i.e judging contests, civil disputes, etc.

alecfreudenberg··on ChatGPT can now call Wolfram Alpha
Sweet. Combining the statiscal inference of GPT with the direct calculations of WA is moving towards an arguable AGI. It seems like now it needs some way to define layers of contextual awareness and reasoning beyond next word prediction to really break into the AGI realm.
alecfreudenberg··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece
Good eye! I added this to their bugs forum.

I believe they are still a team of one, and have focused on app progress and efficiency at the expense of bugs & loose ends that would typically be handled in a larger organization with dedicated teams for that sort of thing. I bet they would

Personally I find it charming. That is until I run into a security issue.

I can't speak for Flowx though.

Shout out to FlowX on Android. ( https://flowx.io/ )

The best weather app I've ever used.

Much thanks to the founder Duane & his partner for the ongoing development

this is what I'm seeing as well.

pilot selection of aim9 over guns due to difficulty/risk of engagement is concerning. would really like recoverable intel, or at least some more detailed assessment prior to engagement.

I'm assuming this information is just not being released, but it begs for obvious scrutiny.

alecfreudenberg··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
1. Commit to a year off, for your health. The idea of drinking at the end of the year will sound about as appealing as drinking nail polish.

2. Start a new social circle that doesn't involve alcohol

3. Accept that drinking sucks and don't let people make you feel like you're missing out on something. Misery loves company.

alecfreudenberg··on Managers with a business degree reduce employees' wages, do not increase profit
Management is an often toxic mix between Strategy/SME/HR/Teacher/Therapist/Consultant/Punisher

Separate the functions out explicitly, as needed.

Often they're just corporate prison guards in organizations with bloated structures and antagonistic views of staff from an executive perspective.

Flatten your structures so the highest-level strategy is connected to your lowest paid staff. If you can't do this, then you have a toxic company that resembles prison labor and the whole thing deserves to fail.
