alexbell··on Go for Objective-C developers
No need to! ObjC developers have soldiered on for years and years without such fanciness.
alexbell··on iPhone 5s Owners Gobbling “Unprecedented” Levels of Data, Study Finds
I think lots of video streaming is adaptive to bandwidth, and if you have an LTE connection that can handle HD video you'll get it. Still doesn't account for why the trend is supposedly 5s specific. Perhaps because the 5s can handle more LTE bands?
alexbell··on Confessions of a Drone Warrior
I wonder if you'd allow a pilot to use the term? They do much the same thing, of course they are actually physically present (miles above). They are, however, about as likely to be injured (in these counter insurgency operations) as the drone operator is driving home. I think this is largely just what modern counter insurgency wars are for Air Forces, who are largely aerial assassins rather than "warriors". It makes war less sexy, and I think that's a good thing.
alexbell··on Easy 6502
Yeah, but...it's a cool thing to see on a Saturday for those that haven't seen it before. :)
alexbell··on A new breed of Chrome Apps
That language will be web, I suspect. Perhaps Google will offer prerolled components specifically for Android? I strongly suspect that Chrome is the platform Google wants to push for client development now, with Android essentially as a shell for it. While web may arguably be "worse" on Android now, Google has a very large, talented engineering team who could change that relatively fast. Java is a dead end at this point for them I think as far as pushing client development forward. My personal preference would be Android development via Go lang, but I don't think there's much of a chance of that.

I am not a web developer BTW, I am primarily an iOS dev who has done ~6 months of Android work.

alexbell··on A new breed of Chrome Apps
Why not? What if the apps are purchased seamlessly through the play store and can run on Android or in Chrome?

I have a feeling they will add more and more Android device APIs to whatever is coming, until it has just as many as the Java APIs.

I've thought for the past year or so that there is no way the future of Android app development is Java/Dalvik.

alexbell··on Apple Developer Website Update
It was down last night though, possibly related?
alexbell··on Why haven't cash-strapped American schools embraced open source?
I've seen rms speak before, and one point he made really hit home. It is absolutely inexcusable for a school to teach using what is essentially a mystery black box. If a student wants to be able to open up the source code and see how things work, they should be able to.
alexbell··on Nexus 4 Unusable for VoIP Calls
Yep. Say what you will about Apple products, but it's no coincidence that professional audio applications are so much more prevalent on Apple products. Core Audio is a fantastic base for developers to work with.
alexbell··on Alaska Airlines, Flying Above an Industry’s Troubles
Not true. I live in Portland, and Alaska is the dominant airline here. I have flown with them over a dozen times, and never had a bad experience.
alexbell··on Mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut
It's depressing how we are becoming numb to mass shootings due to their frequency. It seems like a week can't go by without a tragedy like this occurring.
alexbell··on Can English Majors Be Good Developers?
I have a poli sci degree, about two years of CS at a community college. I am a techincal lead at post acquisition company, I started with them as an unpaid intern when the founders worked out of an apartment.

Agree 100% about "curious people who are passionate". Interviewing people that have engineering degrees, I find a lot of people I could describe as bored or not curious. Sure it's not the case for everyone, but I think an engineer without an engineering degree is naturally going to be more prone to learn outside of their job. A lot of people with CS degrees seem to think the learning part of their job is done.

alexbell··on Microsoft Is Disappearing Before Our Very Eyes
You are missing the real reason iPads sell well. "trendy, hip" is only part of it. Easy to use and simple is a much bigger part, and arguably contributes to "trendy, hip" more than any sort of consumer gadget fashions.
alexbell··on As Boom Lures App Creators, Tough Part Is Making a Living
The article doesn't detail their planning, goals, etc...but it seems to me like they went all in without a solid plan. Just hoping to get rich. And it didn't happen.
alexbell··on The iPhone 5
Gee, I wonder why he didn't mention the maps? Apple's devices are still more compelling for me personally, but less so than they used to me. Hopefully Google builds and maintains its own iOS maps application.
alexbell··on HP Launches The Beta Release Of Open WebOS
It was pushed back from by end of 2012 to "sometime in 2013". And with Intel and Co's record I would not remain hopeful.
alexbell··on PonyDebugger: Chrome Developer Tools for Native iOS Apps
This will improve my life I think, installing now and thank you!
alexbell··on An iPad Lover’s Take On The Nexus 7
> I think almost all brand name tablets are on ICS now.

I thought so too. Some are. Shockingly enough, I believe the Samsung tabs they gave out last year at I/O are still on 3.x. Tried to update my coworker's before heading to I/O with it and ended up with a newer version of Honeycomb. :/

alexbell··on "Android ICS already offers more than what is coming in iOS 6"
App and API compatability. New apps using iOS 6 APIs will still run.
alexbell··on New to Ruby? Tips for the new Rubyist.
That was narrow minded. You know it's possible to be a developer and never touch a web app stack professionally, right? Let alone the One True Language that is Ruby.
alexbell··on No-cost desktop software development is dead on Windows 8
Hopefully university CS courses will stop utilizing Visual Studio now.
alexbell··on Apollo program source code
If this stuff interests you, I highly recommend David Mindell's Digital Apollo.
alexbell··on HBO Decides It Still Isn't Difficult Enough To Watch HBO Shows
I hope Netflix's original content gets good/becomes a large enough library to threaten HBO. They would offer subscriptions over apps, set top boxes, and maybe even browsers shortly after.

Content providers need to be smacked around by someone like Netflix in a big way.

alexbell··on IKamasutra: Apple Hates Brunettes
The problem is the human element. If you are doing something that can in some way be construed as going against the app store guidelines, eventually you are going to get a reviewer who rejects/takes down your app. Even if other reviewers knew that your app had been around for ever, you are eventually going to run into one who doesn't, or feels it's his/her job to be as strict as possible. There is very little consistency in Apple's process because of this. The company I work for has had apps rejected for things we've done literally about a dozen times before, and we certainly knew were border line but we figured were OK because it had been allowed so many times before. But eventually we run into a reviewer who for whatever reason, rejects something that we've done tons of times before.

Overall I think Apple's process works, but the inconsistency is just ridiculous. Especially when your releases are time critical.

alexbell··on Bartosz Milewski - The Downfall of Imperative Programming
Grand Central Dispatch, I think you mean. :)

It's on iOS 4+ as well.

alexbell··on Poll: Do you have a CS degree?
I have a non CS related degree and am about two years in to a CS degree. I have not taken any classes in about 6 months and do not know whether I will resume doing so. So...I put non CS related degree.
alexbell··on Visual Basic, PHP, Rails. Is Node.js next?
I found the last paragraph/sentence a little weird - "Until then, I think people will still continue to mostly build in Rails with a large contingent going to iOS – the latter not due to the superiority of the development platform, but rather because that’s what is needed to access iOS users."

Rails -> iOS??? Apples and oranges.

alexbell··on The shocking toll of hardware and software fragmentation on Android development
Are these people in the third world putting their credit card into an app store and buying software? How do cheap android devices in third world countries validate android as a developer platform in the long run?

I'm not trying to be snarky here btw, legitimate questions.

alexbell··on Google to Sell Tablets on Its Own This Year
The reason Android is so successful on handsets is because Google made a conscious decision to sell their soul to the carriers to get there. They can try and gradually undo that by purchasing their own manufacturer... But it's going to take a while.
alexbell··on New iPad Tops Three Million
It's pretty impressive that an unsubsidized mobile device in the $500+ price range is putting up these numbers. Does anybody besides me think this indicates consumers are replacing their old "real" computers with iPads?
