alexweber··on Berkeley Systems “After Dark” screensavers recreated in CSS
The first thing I looked for was to see if the toasters would roll, eject toast, flap faster, etc. I guess I'll have to fork it to add those features!

alexweber··on Ask HN: What do you use to keep track of bookmarks/notes/snippets?
I’m liking Firefox bookmarks for this lately. Syncs between Firefox apps on different platforms, relatively easy to search, extensible, etc.
alexweber··on Ask HN: What do you use to keep track of bookmarks/notes/snippets?
WordPress has a bookmarklet called “Press This” which sounds very similar: https://wordpress.com/support/press-this/
alexweber··on Ask HN: What are the underrated newsletters you like reading?
I like Inside Security: https://inside.com/security

Plenty of links on the latest threats, botnets, malware, etc. Variety of technical and less-technical pieces.

alexweber··on Ask HN: What are some interesting projects to reuse your old devices?
I’m using an old Asus netbook as a home server. I installed Xubuntu and now I use it as a Docker host for Plex, a torrent server, and other projects. It works surprisingly well!
alexweber··on Tell HN: I miss the old internet
+1 for Mastodon. It's pleasantly weird and small. I very much enjoy the instance(s) I'm on. Check out joinmastodon.org to find one that suits your interests and needs!
alexweber··on Ask HN: Projects that don't make you money but you're doing it out of sheer joy?
I really wanted a t-shirt that said "Ladies Love Cool JPEGs" so I made it, and made a quick website to sell them. Here's the website in case you also like 90s hip hop references mixed with image formats: https://ladieslove.cool/

alexweber··on Dynamics.js, a JavaScript library to create physics-based animations
Well, I suppose you could use the Web MIDI API: http://webaudio.github.io/web-midi-api/

Although if you need to route it to an external (non-browser) output, you might consider using OSC. There appear to be multiple implementations, but here's one: https://github.com/marmorkuchen-net/osc-js

Transmission is a great replacement for uTorrent IMHO
alexweber··on Firefox Bugzilla: Remove Pocket Integration
Quote from the article: "There's no monetary benefit to Mozilla from the integration: Pocket didn't pay for placement in the browser."

one weird hack to run assembler-like code in the browser!

alexweber··on The Lack of Open Tooling for FPGAs
I'm still reading above the level I currently understand when talking about FPGAs and chips and such… but how does Bunnie's Novena[1] factor in to all this?

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novena_(computing_platform)

alexweber··on Ask HN: Do you take nootropics?
Personally, I'm curious about other supplements that can improve my caffeine usage… e.g. prolonging effect, adrenal precursors, etc.
alexweber··on WatchKit
Seems like this is the type of thing that might be possible once the "fully native watch app" sdk is released.
alexweber··on WatchKit
Personally, I really enjoy the automatic sleep/activity tracking that my Pebble provides (via Misfit app)

Besides that, I mainly use it for "watch" stuff.

That said, it is really nice to be able to get notifications without taking my phone out in certain contexts—bicycling, walking, in a pool, phone charging in other room, etc.

Great post.

I'm going to take this opportunity to suggest people check out Duck Duck Go. That is all.

alexweber··on Facebook now informs the sender if you've read their message
FWIW, I tested this a bit with a friend, and it only shows that you've read the message if you're signed in to FB chat. I always stay offline and the sender was not able to see the read-receipt.

alexweber··on Ask HN: What tools do you use to monitor your LAMP server(s)?
you can use Cactus to monitor server load/cpu/etc, I'm not sure about the others...
