amberjack··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
Seriously starting to think we are not going to make it out alive of the near-future.
amberjack··on ChatGPT has almost stopped citing Reddit
Hard to see this as anything but a good thing, Reddit is such a cesspool.
amberjack··on Olo (Color)
I wonder how long it will take until this is some kind of an amusement park thing or whatever.
amberjack··on Gemini 3.7 Flash
This is my experience at least.
amberjack··on Grok 4.6
Still not dead somehow even though they've been renting out datacenter capacity and other (seeming) problems with people leaving and so on. Quite impressive unless it's just been benchmaxxed.
amberjack··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
This seems so much of a no-brainer to me due to scammy calls to elderly and pure time loss responding to calls it is interesting not much has been done about it in other countries. I guess the telemarketers have a good lobby.
amberjack··on Learning more about Claude's mathematical capabilities
2 years until Riemann is solved I guess.
amberjack··on Mistral Patent for “Code implemented tool calls”
EU AI innovation is really amazing.
amberjack··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
It depends on how good the point is, doesn't it? I am more aiming at the "Torment Nexus" type of argument which essentially assumes that writers know technology better than technologists and the mere existence of scifi dystopia that somebody thought up is a good reason ipso facto to not do something.
amberjack··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
I don't know about the disruptive innovation history thing which seems interesting, but the stuff about science fiction, its role as knowledge especially related to politics, reading/misreading and so on just seems confused. Science fiction is primarily fiction and should be treated as such. Why exactly should I agree with the implied (or not) politics of a fictional world if I like the work? Why is it even necessary to take the works whole-sale and not just parts here and there as they seem reasonable? Straussian reading is also a possibility that is completely bypassed even with some big figures being into that, for good or ill.

The stuff about nation states and corporations taking over seems confused as well, since pretty much everywhere goverments, regulation and taxation are highest/largest they've ever been. Also, it is very strange taking the interest of some people in getting rid or moving beyond nation states as sinister since this has been a stated goal of democratic projects like the EU. Furthermore, in China technology is completely subservient to the state and they intentionally kneecapped the whole sector fairly recently since it grew too big.

amberjack··on I won't read LLM authored fiction
Reading your comment I suddenly remembered the existence of Stephen Baxter's Mammoth Trilogy. No idea if it is any good but I should probably try reading it.
amberjack··on AI psychosis is the new leadership blind spot
Probably there are a few different types of AI psychosis. The one I've seen a few times seems to be caused by a lack of epistemic norms that would keep someone grounded, e.g. searching for counter-evidence instead of evidence, combined with AI being more than happy to supply evidence no matter how tenous. Even without AI there would be problems from these types since it's very hard to convince somebody that they are wrong when the entire way they form beliefs is not sound but with AI it's just impossible.
amberjack··on I won't read LLM authored fiction
I would like to read "actual" LLM fiction in the same sense I would like to read fiction from a lion. I wonder if that kind of alien writing is even possible with this kind of technology. The RL process would have to be quite different at least and even then it is still using human content as the base. Anyone seen any good or even decent or OK fiction of this type?
amberjack··on Taste Is All That's Left
[flagged]
amberjack··on Mars dust is toxic. How will future astronauts deal with it?
I do wish Elon would focus more on getting to Mars.
amberjack··on Governments are making a dangerous bet on the AI boom
Staring down the mountain of debt and thinking about how much needs to be cut or taxes raised to get anything resembling balance is no fun so we get this grasping at straws. At least the US has room to raise taxes unlike the EU.
amberjack··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
So how many people from DeepMind have left now? Not looking too good for Google.
amberjack··on Why Erdős Problems Are Falling to AI
The problem is more that the puzzles had an original context and reasons why they arose from "real" problems directly or mathematical problems trying to solve "real" problems etc. but the presentation and abstraction hides this pretty well for people not "near" the problems.
amberjack··on Helsinki Hacker News Meetup
I live in Helsinki so this seems fun. Commenters everywhere are a pretty strongly (self-)selected bunch so seems like a good way to get a strong selection effect without arduous requirements. Does anyone have previous experience with this kind of a setup?
