ampdepolymerase··on Oklo has a plan to make tiny nuclear reactors that run off nuclear waste
A lot of big countries have significant interests in preventing smaller states from acquiring nuclear arms. It is difficult to say how much of the FUD around civilian nuclear power was planted on purpose by governments.

ampdepolymerase··on Launch HN: Turing College (YC W21) – Online data science school
It's rare these days to meet a traditional engineering grad who is not desperately trying to switch to CS. The job market is just not there for pure hardware careers in big cities.

What are your thoughts on just using plain datalog/prolog?
ampdepolymerase··on Launch HN: Turing College (YC W21) – Online data science school
The prereqs for ML are the same for most STEM courses. Despite the popularity of CS, there are plenty of graduates in legacy engineering fields like mechanical and electrical who are more than equipped to be on boarded quickly via a bootcamp model. They have the knowledge (and usually know their way around basic Python and MATLAB) but lacks the real world software engineering experience and a developer's mindset.

ampdepolymerase··on This Chemical Does Not Exist
The type of "incremental advances" you see in recent Nobels are the exception in history, not the norm. Stuff like CRISPR is what the Nobel is designed for.
ampdepolymerase··on This Chemical Does Not Exist
If you can find an efficient, generic, and universal method for synthesizing molecules of arbitrary shape and complexity, then you would receive the Nobel Prize for Chemistry and possibly Physics and Medicine too. You would also likely receive the Turing award (if your method is algorithmic and not using ML blackboxes since the search space for biochemistry is absolutely immense) and there may be entire prizes named after you.

Whoever can find such an algorithm will put Corey and Woodward out of a job and the entire field of organic chemistry will study your name and life in future.

ampdepolymerase··on Show HN: Fuzzynote – terminal-based, CRDT-backed, collaborative note-taking
Does it support character level collaboration (like Google docs) or is this just generic entry/line level sync? IIRC CRDTs do not work well for Google-docs type text editing because they cannot capture intent well.

ampdepolymerase··on Say Goodbye to the American Dream
HN is often awfully quiet when authoritarianism is practiced by non-superpower countries. If you think the big Asian economic powers are paternalistic, then I doubt you will find SE Asia to be to your liking. Do not mistake the rose tinted glamour of tourism and sunny beaches of nations in that region as sharing the same values as your typical western nation. Digital nomads and tax havens do not a manifest destiny make.

If the open source community absolutely need a 4G baseband, just crowdfund and buy out Fabrice Bellard's company. The software quality is probably better than anything else out there.
ampdepolymerase··on Policies that make the poor less poor
What an innovative idea! Here in the states, economic indicators are a great proxy for many other aspects. Maybe we could do a trial in Montgomery, Alabama, surely nothing would go wrong.
ampdepolymerase··on Imp: A full-stack relational language built around incremental maintenance
He is reinventing Chris Granger's Eve language all over again. I have seen many, many attempts at "functional-reactive programming languages with an Excel-style DB bolted on top" and not a single one has succeeded so far. The biggest reason for failure is that trying to do both tend to result in a half baked platform. The DB /spreadsheet lacks features and the programming language doesn't offer enough functionality/libraries to make apps. OP needs to make a killer application/compelling use case.

A core issue is that building Android ROMs is very difficult to do so in a simple and accessible manner. The build systems generally all require enterprise server level of memory and a build can easily take hours. Every device has a unique configuration, imagine if every brand of laptop ran their own variant of Ubuntu. For most "ROMs" that you find on obscure places like XDA, the builds by random people across the globe are a much greater security risk than good first-party updates.
