andag··on Israel committing genocide in Gaza, scholars group says
Account created 9 minutes ago...
andag··on It is hard to recommend Python in production
... Adding a step in CICD that catches this is extremely trivial though.
andag··on Meta's Israel Policy Chief tried to suppress pro-Palestinian posts
Flagged.... What a surprise
andag··on A new JSON data type for ClickHouse
There is an http API and it can eat json and csv too (as well as tons of others)
andag··on Show HN: ClickHouse User Defined Table Function in Python
According to the readme this is an intentional demo account.
andag··on Bitwarden is no longer free software
Going proprietary is one thing, but doing it in several steps in different repos and saying nothing about it I really don't like...

What are open alternatives at this point?

andag··on Israel’s Pager Attacks Have Changed the World
He... Did not say that. He said they are targeting civilians, and basic math on casualty numbers ("hamas" numbers being the same as in use by both US and IDF military intelligence) can at least tell you they're doing very little to avoid it.
andag··on Researchers, please replace SQLite with DuckDB now
Or use clickhouse-local/chdb and get something even faster that you can also scale if you need a server later.
andag··on Show HN: Open-source x64 and Arm GitHub runners
I want the vendor that can take care of this for us, but that can guarantee a private egress range, or can run things within our VPC.

Several builds connect to internal resources, so running them on external nodes suboptimal and expensive when it comes to network egress.

andag··on Nix-direnv is a quality of life improvement
Direnv in itself is a quality of life improvement, whether you use nix behind it is optional
andag··on Military action against land-based targets in Yemen moves a step closer
> The US Navy ship has every right to be there under international law, and its reason for being there is to repel attacks on civilian shipping that also has every right to be there.

Every right to go to another countries waters and kill it's solders who are imposing a blockade ordered by their government? - A blockade that has killed 0 people I would add.

I mean the US can't possibly give in to these terrorists demands right - to stop bombardment of civilians and let in humanitarian aid....

For clarification, do you believe preventing aid from entering gaza under the threat of violence is self defense, but preventing ships from going through the red sea trade route is terrorism? - I mean these ships are informed that they are breaking a blockade and chose to continue anyway, and still no civilians have been hurt.

andag··on Kagi – Sourcing from Brave Search, improved image search, and new Safari ext
Anyone found a good alternative to the android google search widget using kagi? I kind of want to switch, but I want consistency across searches in different places, and I find that widget very good...
andag··on Google is picking ChatGPT responses from Quora as correct answer
I think Quora is a partner of anthropic/Claude, not sure this is ChatGPT.
andag··on Why it can be a good idea to say “Thank You” to ChatGPT
I'm worried about the opposite actually, us teaching ourselves a species that we can talk to someone with a human face in the very direct and rude way
andag··on Personal Concierge Using OpenAI's ChatGPT via Telegram and Voice Messages
Can you update the readme with some info privacy wise. Some info on who I'm sharing my data with?

Openai - fair enough, already doing that a fair amount .

andag··on Show HN: YakGPT – A locally running, hands-free ChatGPT UI
Maybe a small video demo would be an ok alternative?
andag··on Show HN: Low-cost backup to S3 Glacier Deep Archive
https://github.com/andaag/zfs-to-glacier

I built something similar a while back that I've been using for years now.

Something worth noting. There is a minimum cost to files. If you have tons of tiny kb sized files (incremental snapshots..) it's drastically cheaper to fallback to s3 for them.

andag··on The Gitlab Team Handbook
If it's anything like my company - we buy information on how the average salary and cost of living changes in different areas over time. That's the information that's proprietary.
andag··on I want off Mr. Golang’s Wild Ride (2020)
I've been tempted to consider kotlin + graalvm as an option as well. Graalvm is getting pretty cool, but it does add some complexity, and it's too tied to Oracle in my opinion...

C# might be cool again as well though, haven't really considered that since before .NET core.

(And I think Go is ok, but I find coding in kotlin more enjoyable)

andag··on You probably don’t need AWS and are better off without it
> Hence you are locked in and have zero negotiating position. Your business has an existential risk based on AWS - assuming your code is critical to the business and could not practically be rewritten because of all this special sauce you’re using.

You don't have a negotiation position based on your ability to switch even if you are huge. AWS pricing negotiations is almost exclusively based on volumes.

andag··on WeekToDo – Free Minimalist Weekly Planner App
Anyone seen any open source versions with sync and a mobile app? I want one I can contribute to or hack to my own liking, but I need those basics.
andag··on Building single-page-apps with PostgREST
"there is no backend code!" - no... There is, just you moved it into the database. That doesn't mean you don't have to deal with it, maintain it, and change it over time.
andag··on Zerotier – multiple vulnerabilities lead to private network access
> This attack is still possible (as of 20/09/2021); however, an attacker is required to invest significant compute time (many many years with a single RTX2070) to generate a valid identity

So it's entirely feasible if you have access to any cloud vendor then.

andag··on Show HN: Connect your bank account to Google Sheets
Feedback : my time from registering to getting data from my account was insanely fast. Super easy to get started .

I strongly agree on putting a list of supported banks before signing up though. I've had experiences with other providers where sign up and verification takes time, and then after spending 24h being verified it doesn't support your bank anyway... So that up front is good

andag··on Getting a Covid jab is safer than taking aspirin
Your reasoning is flawed..

It's not a choice of "take vaccine, have risk" or "don't take vaccine and not have risk."

It's take vaccine - with an unknown long term risk, or risk covid where there are also strong signs of long term side effects. There has been research showing infertility effects, there is research showing permanent brain alternations in even some mild cases. And yes, nothing of this is fully proven yet, and we don't know how impactful it is, but the signals are there.

andag··on Oceanbase, yet another open source HTAP database
It does mention "english will be coming soon" in the readme
andag··on Ubuntu 21.04
1. You won't get a kernel update that doesn't contain zfs support, as the distro contains this. 2. Even if you install a manual kernel from outside of ubuntu you wont' brick it.. you'd just have to boot the old kernel.

btrfs and zfs are.. not comparable.

andag··on Why I Built Litestream
Dammit man, now I want cookies.
andag··on A distributed Posix file system built on top of Redis and S3
How do you deal with failures? What happens if the redid availability zone disappears for example? An I manually responsible for recovery and backups in this cases, or do you use redis as a cache that can be recovered from s3?
andag··on ReMarkable tablet open source tools and hacks
Really wish there was a good official cloud API...
