andy_boot··on Red team hacker on how she breaks into buildings and pretends to be the bad guy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Real_Hustle I remember this, this was good, lots of social engineering before I knew what it was called.
andy_boot··on Dust Hits Version 1.0.0
Rust project 'dust' (du-in-rust) has hit version 1.0.0
andy_boot··on When did “privacy issues” start to mean “too much privacy”?
Didn't Russia make a habbit of killing journalists who criticized either the old or new regimes from 1990 to present day? Pretty sure that was prevalent. Maybe they weren't tracking online much in the early days though.

I believe he joined as a late founder, he wasn't on the original team.
andy_boot··on Are Daily Scrum meetings worth it?
I also noticed this.

We came up with a variant to fix this. You have to say what the next person in the circle said they'd do yesterday before your talk.

This forced everyone to pay more attention as you don't know who would be standing next to you tomorrow. It wasn't easy to do but I think it did make people more aware of what was going on.

andy_boot··on Broot – A new way to see and navigate directory trees
That's why I wrote this: https://github.com/bootandy/dust Because it was frustrating to track down what had used disk space.
andy_boot··on Over a Third of Americans Battle Job Burnout Every Single Week
I've taken 2 sabbaticals from work. In the UK at least most companies are totally fine with you doing this.
andy_boot··on Google gets OK to siphon water for South Carolina plant
I don't see why water used for cooling can't later be used as irrigation water
andy_boot··on Pig War
I'm quite relieved that the higher ups were able to successfully de-escalate the situation. It is so easy to read about situations where some pompous military officer trys to escalate and kick start a conflict. But fortunately a situation that has gotten out of hand is de-escalated smoothly.
andy_boot··on My Time at Snap
Personally, I agree with your summary of the Fountainhead.

If you choose to read Atlas Shrugged, however, her opinions start to get more extreme and unsettling.

andy_boot··on Uber data reveals motoring slower than walking in many cities
That gets tricky though, Can tradespeople can use their vans to do their food shopping? Can private citizens become a painter/decorator so they are then allowed a vehicle? Can a private citizen have a vehicle if their sister is disabled?
andy_boot··on VMware to Acquire Bitnami
Usually depends on the type of option. If they are 'double cliff' then the employee stock option will vest automatically, if they aren't then the emplyee will lose them.

andy_boot··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Simplistic yes, but also true. He became throughly disillusioned with socialism because he felt that someone like Stalin would always take control of it.

My interpretation was that he was always anti-authority, but his experiences led him to believe that an authoritian figure will always try to grab power and it doesn't matter what `side` they say they are for, power is their aim.

True he liked the spirit of his socialist militia but by the end I think he felt its spirit had been crushed and abused by others.

andy_boot··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
I highly recommend Homage to Catalonia if you liked Animal Farm. It really explains how Orwell became disillusioned with communism (while fighting for it).
andy_boot··on UK unveils new Tempest fighter jet
...cockpit, displays, controls, ejector seat. Designing it so the G-Force won't squash the pilot, strengthening the weak and vulnerable cockpit.

Supporting both seems wrong to me.

andy_boot··on Have the Tech Giants Grown Too Powerful?
Foxconn, SAP ? These are good examples aren't they.

Edit: Not nvidia. Realised OP was asking for None-US companies

andy_boot··on Anti-If: The missing patterns (2016)
I have used this pattern too. I like it.

One small problem is that depending on how your threading and cache works it might be possible for the cache to be cleared after the contains call but before the get.

andy_boot··on Ask HN: What is your comfort book?
Catch 22. - I can re-read that over and over laughing at the silliness of their situation.

Also If you enjoyed Catch I recommend Vernon God Little

andy_boot··on Telegram told to give encryption keys to Russian authorities
Errr, They (probably) did that a few weeks ago:

andy_boot··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
several conventional luxury cars already have this feature - they detect crashes and call emergency services.
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
It is now more locked down (at least "pg_catalog, public, information_schema" are no longer available). Thanks.
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
Noted, I am currently running on the assumption that there is nothing interesting in that PG (There isn't). But yes I would like to lock that user down further it really shouldn't be able to access those things.
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
Good points. I'll update Q3 and look at Q4 it was not intentional to use keywords.
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
No problem, just restarted it.

Its a brand new project so I may need to do some hardening.

andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
True. Well observed. How would you resolve this?
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
Despite being the author I think you are correct. It should be table: 'cat' not 'cats'
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
1) Yes. I'll re-word that part. 2) I debated with myself on that. On one hand it is clearly better to ORDER BY. On the other hand I'm trying to teach people the window functions and I don't want them typing in more SQL than they have to.
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
you are correct. I'll fix that.
andy_boot··on Advanced SQL window function quiz
That query looks fine to me, I'll tweak the code.

Yep I need to fix up Q10 a bit.
