And what reason is that?
andyana··on European Citizen's Initiative for UBI
Its not like a Ponzi scheme, though. Nobody is getting rich from such a policy.
andyana··on What are the odds we are living in a computer simulation? (2016)
I like to think that whatever happens here is insignificant in the big picture, and that's why bad things happen and divine intervention doesn't routinely occur.

I can't explain why its insignificant, of course. It's like a hydrocarbon combusting in your car engine, and the rest of the little molecules wondering what kind of a monster could do that to them. We humans aren't even aware that it could be a problem.

andyana··on What are the odds we are living in a computer simulation? (2016)
Our observations are driving the comparison, no? People are trying to make sense of existence but only have their personal experiences and knowledge to use as evidence.
andyana··on European Citizen's Initiative for UBI
You don't need to ridicule. Can you explain why such a policy doesn't work? I must have skipped that day at school.
andyana··on Health insurers are threatening not to cover some patients’ ER bills
I bet a butter knife could have cut the tension during the drive home.
andyana··on Mimicking a device is becoming almost impossible
How does this make any money for the bot operators? Wouldn't it be easy to see who is advertising vaccination timeslots on Craigslist?
andyana··on I Will Never Use a Microsoft Account to Log Into My Own PC
My fan is quite advanced. It has "night" and "natural breeze" modes, for example, and it was the cheapest one at Costco last year.
andyana··on I can't stand developing for Safari anymore
I'm not sure I understand you correctly, but I think it would be a more apt comparison to complain about the songs performed at the free concert rather than all the externalities of it. If that's your complaint, then I stand by my observation: how odd...
andyana··on I can't stand developing for Safari anymore
This would be ideal, in my opinion.
andyana··on I can't stand developing for Safari anymore
How odd to demand anything of a free content producer, no?
andyana··on US seizes Iranian PressTV websites
I think we both know the sanctions are not for the benefit of the planet. Also, real people suffer because of the sanctions, and you really shouldn't get to call the shots on who that is.
andyana··on Ask HN: Feeling guilty for doing the bare minimum at work
This is extremely interesting. I have many of your symptoms, including low test, and I was diagnosed with a a microadenoma on my pituitary gland 2 weeks ago.
andyana··on Google executives see cracks in their company’s success
Here is an example of what I see from Google these days. I get a notification banner telling me that Hangouts is being replaced by Gmail Chat. This comes a year after a rumor that Hangouts was being shut down. Apparently, that was just a rumor or something.

So I continue using Hangouts until now when I'm told it is officially being replaced. Whatever, I think, I'll just switch to Gmail Chat and uninstall Hangouts. Today, I get sent a video from someone still on Hangouts. They fucking play link takes me to the Hangouts page on the play store. I need to install Hangouts to watch the video.

You can't make this up.

andyana··on Ask HN: 90s programmers, what did you expect the future of tech to look like?
Regarding screens in glasses: where is the hold up? I've been thinking of prototyping something for the past few weeks (only thinking, hence my question).
andyana··on China beats US in patent filings for second straight year
Yeah, but for which country?
andyana··on U.S. senators propose 25% tax credit for semiconductor manufacturing
Don't we trash the Chinese for subsidizing their industries?

I'm not against it, but if this helps people, why aren't we doing it for everyone?

andyana··on Maddy: Composable all-in-one mail server
You can run your own stuff and use a commercial relay like Sendinblue to handle delivery for you. Best of both worlds, in my opinion.
andyana··on The ultrathin new iMac lost a lot more than size, like USB-A ports
This made me laugh.
andyana··on LSD and psilocybin increase the fractal dimension of brain activity
I believe it is possible to have a bad trip in this sense because it typically takes time to integrate the experience. The time spent trying to integrate can be scary, because you don't understand it yet.

I had a vision of a blonde child, perhaps six years old, burst out of a tunnel of light during a DMT trip. I still don't know what it means, and because my son is blonde, i can't help but feel that maybe there is a message im not seeing (this is coming from an ex-atheist of twenty years). It was a weird event, but it has made me make positive changes in my life regardless. For example, I try a lot harder to have the time for him. I've decided to stop trying to date because of it (so that I don't have to divide my time more), and that's given me a self esteem boost.

It is a complex thing, one that we don't understand. Its a beautiful experience, but one I don't take lightly. It needs respect.

andyana··on Social media are turbocharging the export of America’s political culture
The CBC produces lots of other quality content, though.
andyana··on Dutch official calls for complete ban on Bitcoin
Those inhumane traits exist with cash too, don't they? I've never gotten my money back after being ripped off.
andyana··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
No, not even as a technicality. It is possible, full stop.
andyana··on China is vaccinating a staggering 20M people a day
Is it better than nothing?
andyana··on El Salvador makes Bitcoin legal tender
You mean a safety deposit box at a bank? At a bank most Ecuadorians don't use?
andyana··on Police can access Ring footage without a warrant
Good point. I currently do that with ZM. I suppose it is a bit more work for LE to request footage from individual camera operators.
andyana··on San Francisco may be first major US city to hit herd immunity, experts say
Just wanted to say you've made very good points.
andyana··on Police can access Ring footage without a warrant
I don't like it either, but I'd prefer not being told where I can and/or can't point cameras from my property.

I suppose this is just the way it is now.

andyana··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
You might want to rethink your bike claim; it is certainly possible.
andyana··on Study finds only 1/3 of adults would take an immortality pill if they could
No, but bad knees and diabetes hastens the inevitable. Hell, they might not even hurt as bad as the depression.
