andyl··on Rust 1.5
"Rust goes out of its way to be modern and gender-inclusive."

And yet - epic fail.

What is the reason?

andyl··on Serial podcast returns as Bowe Bergdahl talks US military 'desertion'
Bergdahl, deserter and traitor, violated his oath.
andyl··on KiCad 4.0.0 is Out
How does KiCad compare to Eagle?
andyl··on Show HN: Don't Name the Shooter
Gaining an understanding of your enemy's background, capabilities and motivations is not a 'courtesy'. Rather, such knowledge is needed to achieve victory.

"If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles."

andyl··on Show HN: Don't Name the Shooter
"Say the person's name."

The murderer's names are Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik

andyl··on Show HN: Don't Name the Shooter
The shooters in the San Bernadino massacre were Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik. IMHO it's important to understand their background and motivations. Know your enemy.
andyl··on Are women really better than men at furniture assembly (as IKEA claim)?
The study did look at build quality.

"In terms of construction scores (from 1 to 10 where 10 represents a perfectly built trolley), men averaged 8.9 with instructions, 7.6 without; the women averaged 7.5 with, and 5.7 without."

andyl··on How the 'Quiet Eye' Technique Makes Athletes More Coordinated
I find that 'excess mental activity' blocks peak-performance when coding. Excess mental activity can be described as 'aversions/judgements/fears' about the work to be done - self-talk like "this looks hard", "fuck I hate this build system", etc.

I try to just stare at the code without judgment for a few moments, then let the fingers do their thing. Sort of a meditative practice - quiet mind instead of quiet eye.

YMMV! :-)

andyl··on How the 'Quiet Eye' Technique Makes Athletes More Coordinated
I believe it makes a difference in coding as well.
andyl··on Ahmed Mohamed: 'Clock boy' seeks $15m from city and school
The clock boy incident was a clever hoax. Ahmed and his family may not be great engineers, but showed themselves masters of our media and legal system.
andyl··on LSD Microdosing
LSD can kill:

andyl··on There are far more Muslims ready to fight for the West than against it
TLDR; Muslims serve in Western Armies, so shut your pie hole about Muslim terror attacks in Mali, Paris, Sinai, Boston, London, Madrid, Bali, New York, etc. etc. etc. etc.
andyl··on They Are Us
Some refugees do participate in terrorism! Paris attackers had links to Syria. Tsarnaev brothers had links to Chechnya. Not worth the risk.
andyl··on They Are Us
Absolutely serious that elements of the refugee population belong to groups that engage in torture/beheading/rape/enslavement. We have no idea how to tell the good from the bad. Just takes a small number of radicals to cause huge damage and disruption. Not worth the risk.
andyl··on They Are Us
Post WW2 refugees didn't have elements that were beheading, torturing, killing and enslaving. Huge difference.
andyl··on Cinematic obscenity in America: A hundred years of over-baring censors
Losing your job and access to employment opportunities is a very common and very effective form of censorship.
andyl··on Cinematic obscenity in America: A hundred years of over-baring censors
Think censorship is over? Express opposition to feminists/muslims/blacks/gays/multiculturism/drugs etc. and watch the fireworks. Neo-puritan morals police are stronger than ever.
andyl··on Humans are not unitary individuals but superorganisms
Where does the memory reside? What is it that 'remembers'?
andyl··on A Boy Who Became a World War II Veteran at 13 Years Old
Thank you for your teaching.
andyl··on Twitter Sees 6% Increase in “Like” Activity After First Week of Hearts
Wow - that's pretty exciting. Great to see that Twitter is innovating again.
andyl··on Study: Oxytocin mediates social reward by harnessing endocannabinoids in mice
Opium - really takes the edge off.
andyl··on Ireland to 'decriminalise' small amounts of drugs for personal use
A small step to remove the fetters of intolerance. But if legalizing small amounts is good, then legalizing large amounts is better. Nobody has the right to limit my ability to take large amounts of drugs - that's my personal business.
andyl··on The Real Population Problem (2013)
Starts as a scientific exploration on the relationship between population and energy. Ends as self-loathing.
andyl··on How New Long-Range Radios Will Change the Internet of Things
Looks like LoRa is star topology. Is there another comparable tech that supports mesh networking?
andyl··on Modern art was CIA 'weapon' (1995)
Art as CIA weapon - sure. Cultural marxism as leftist weapon - still paying dividends.
andyl··on Theranos didn’t work with the huge drug company it supposedly made money from
"Fake it till you make it."
andyl··on My Dark California Dream
"Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."
andyl··on The number of Americans who say they smoke pot has doubled in the last decade
Drug industry on the march! Will be interesting to see where drug use tops-out as more states legalize and we see the emergence of real marketing and consumer education from the drug suppliers.
andyl··on LingVM is an Erlang VM that runs directly on Xen
Very interesting - might be a great way to setup a sandbox for untrusted code.

On a related note: there is also the nerves project for embedded Erlang/Elixir - http://nerves-project.org/

andyl··on How Collecting Opium Antiques Turned Me into an Opium Addict (2012)
It's great to see articles on HN that help to familiarize and normalize drug use. We know that the war on drugs doesn't work, and the stigmatize / demonize approach is so busted. After reading many articles you learn that there's nothing to be afraid of, and indeed drug use can open new pathways of knowledge.
